My thoughts on what James Rhodey's role will be in the story of Avengers: Age of Ultron

Rhodey is in it, will he be an Avenger or will he be a motivation for Stark to come back? Or both? Just my brief thoughts on this.

Hello folks. I will just share my thoughts on how James Rhodes (a.k.a. War Machine) will play a significant part in the Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In Iron Man 3, we all know that Stark blew up all of his suits and he removed his arc reactor. Many are wondering how Tony Stark will suit up in the sequel to help his fellow Avengers against Ultron. And now just last week, we heard the news that his best pal will join the fray in the A:AOU. There have been many questions that have surfaced in my mind like whether Rhodes will be a member of the team or he will just have a role that will make Stark don the suit again.

I think that it totally makes sense that Rhodey is in it because:

1.) There have been rumors that the government will play a part in the creation of Ultron. Maybe Rhodey will know all of this and he will be the one to tell Tony about the plans of the government, gives him a blueprint or something that includes a design of Ultron. That will also serve as a motivation for Stark to make a suit again knowing that Ultron is a huge threat and he can also reassemble the Avengers now that they have the Avengers tower.

2.)As stated in HitFix, Rhodey "has a key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel". I think that he will be the first one to face Ultron as he opposes the government's action. Badly injured, he will call Stark and he will let him know about Ultron. It would also serve a motivation for Stark to suit up again now along with Rhodey and his fellow Avengers.

3.)Another rumor is Tony Stark is the one that creates Ultron. It makes sense that Rhodey is in it because he can serve as an adviser or he could serve as an emotional support for Stark because he is his most trusted ally. Later on, he would join the Avengers in their fight against Ultron. (I know this sounds funny but it is only speculation)

There you have it folks. My own thoughts on how Rhodey's role will play part in the story for 2015's most anticipated sequel. Sound off your comments below. Thanks guys!

War Machine and Falcon should be called in for the final conflict.

No, no, no, no, no to killing Black Widow. Kill Hawkeye, leave Black Widow alone.

Is it a sure thing that Rhodey is in it, or is it still just a discussion? When I read that one story, I didn't think it was a sure thing yet.

@interstein I agree, and depending on how The Winter Soldier ends, Bucky too

I suspect Rhodey will be set up as the new Iron Man. I had a treatment I did with a friend for Tony to step back and basically be the mentor to Rhodey, after War Machine went AWOL and needed to essentially hide as Iron Man.

It'd be interesting to tie in the whole part of Rhodey going kinda crazy in the Iron Man armor (which I believe was in Demon In The Bottle), and Tony having to get it together and suiting up to stop him. Fitting Ultron into that isn't too difficult.

The part that is a huge question mark to me is Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch and Ultron. I can see having the Avengers deal with one or the other, but not both in the same story. VERY interested to see how Whedon manages that.

I think both Falcon and Warmachine should have been a surprised and should be brought into the final act to help fight against Ultron. It might even top the The Avengers final act.

I would not mind Black Widow was killed off. It would give the team a bigger momentum and drive to avenge the team member.

They're all good enough reasons to get him in an IM film but I'm not sure the reasons you give are good enough to get Rhodey into A:AoU.

He needs something more unique and defined purely by him to get him in it otherwise they could just use another SHIELD based character.

If I was daring to dream and think big I do wonder if Whedon might do a sort of bastardization of the MoE/Dark Avengers storyline. Rhodey is now Iron Patriot after all (not War Machine) and could be part of that with Ultron leading.

Ultron could take over the Iron Patriot armour (instead of the Crimson Cowl like the comics) and lead a sort of Dark Avengers made up of Crossbones, Abomination, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and perhaps even Winter Soldier and Kurse.

Here's Rhodey's significant role: Tony builds Ultron for the government (or however that goes), Ultron has the brain patterns of either Tony or Bruce, maybe both but I doubt it, Scarlet Witch accidentally jinxes Ultron and turns him on, Rhodey was said to have a mission with Ultron but, Ultron goes rogue and kills Rhodey. Rhodey being killed, Tony is given motivation to jump back into the suit.

He's black, so he might be the first one to die. Jk. I think that he will be dispatched by the govt. to confront Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

Ultron is being played by James Spader. Not just the voice, but the flesh and blood actor.

There's a sort-of spoiler in the spy-photos of TWS showing a number of people moving in a robotic fashion, and I don't think it's a big stretch to assume that we'll be seeing life model decoys introduced in that film next year. Who are they working for? Considering Agent Sitwell is being interrogated by Steve and Natasha, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that either SHIELD developed them, or SHIELD is being infiltrated by these android spy duplicates.

I'm absolutely positive that the movie will fuel even more speculation on Ultron in 2015.

As for Rhodey - I hate to say this, but it's the truth. He is absolutely THE MOST boring character in the Iron Man movies, which is my official reason as for why he wasn't in the Avengers movie. They have so many characters already, why waste time on someone so uninteresting? Hell, Pepper got the limelight in Iron Man 3 as Shane Black had a choice between focusing more on Rhodey or Pepper... not really a hard choice, I must say.

I think they'd have to really separate him from Tony. He's been going his own way for years now, with only the occasional Iron Man cameo... but he's gone in some really questionable directions. Now he's a cyborg.

Honestly, the only role I can see him in (which is admittedly, limited) has already been played out in Iron Man 2. He'd have his suit hijacked by Ultron.

Hawkeye is beast, he hasn't gotten a chance to be expanded upon yet and he's a way cooler character than black widow. Kill neither... but I you have to then kill Black Widow
