We May Finally See X-MEN's Nightcrawler Wield His Signature Swords In AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

According to a new rumor, Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler will finally embrace his swashbuckling side in Avengers: Doomsday by wielding a pair of swords...

Of all the actors announced during the recent Avengers: Doomsday's cast reveal live-stream, Alan Cumming might have been the most surprising.

Cumming made his one and only appearance in 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, in X2, but declined the studio's offer to reprise the role for the third film because he had no interest in sitting through the arduous makeup process again.

Wagner didn't show up in again until Kodi Smit-McPhee took over as a younger take on the character in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the character was pretty much relegated to background support aside from a couple of decent action scenes.

Nightcrawler's charismatic, Errol Flynn-inspired nature has yet to be fully explored in live-action, but it sounds like we will get to see the teleporter's swashbuckling side when Cumming reprises the role in Avengers: Doomsday.

When asked if Nightcrawler will have a decent amount of screen-time in Doomsday during the latest Cosmic Circus Q&A, Alex Perez responded: "I heard he has some incredible action sequences, one of which involves the use of his signature swords."

Kurt didn't pick up a sword in the comic books until the early '80s, and it didn't become his signature weapon until much later. Even so, a pair of pirate-style sabers have since become synosomous with the character.

"Isn't it nuts? I'm excited and amazed," Cumming told Collider when asked about his return for Doomsday in a recent interview. "It's been 23 years since I was a superhero. I've had some makeup tests already for the role, but what's great about it was that before it was about 4 and a half hours to apply it, but now it's only 90 minutes. Before, all of the tattoos were done by hand. They hadn't decided on them before we started filming. Now, they just stick onto my face. It's a game changer. I'm going back to being a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems really lovely."

Cumming also spoke about his role in X-Men 2 and his frustration with the makeup process shortly before it was announced that he'd be back for the next Avengers movie.

“The character is really interesting, the message of the film (tolerance of others who are different from us) was very timely and unusual for a Hollywood blockbuster, but the real drag was having to spend over four hours a day having two men poke my face,” Cumming posted to his website . “Then there were the harnesses for the tail and for flying, the feet, the hands — which made going to the loo a group effort, the teeth, the lenses, oh God don’t get me started.”

Cumming recently took to Instagram to share a fun response to the casting news, captioning his brief video, "Never Say Never."

Cumming will be joined by fellow OG X-Men Ian McKellen (Magneto), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), James Marsden (Cyclops), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique). You can check out the full (for now) cast list below.

Hope hey give him another badass scene like that X-2 opening. Easily one of the most badass scenes out of all the X-Men films.

The real question is will Kurt keep his faith in Doomsday or will the Russos and Mcfeely abandon that aspect of his character

@McMurdo - no chance he's the same character from X2. no [frick]ing chance. If anything, he'll be an atheist who runs his own abortion clinic.

Hell yes. Loved that scene from X-men ‘97 so looking forward to seeing something similar in live action.

My favourite X-Men character is Nightcrawler, but I honestly couldn’t care. This film is a clear disaster

Better keep him Catholic and ditch them scars. Don’t care why he wouldn’t have them and don’t need an explanation.

@Astroman - He's already let slip that the runic symbols/tats are still there and be daft to ditch for the return of the Fox version, but we will get a recast 616 one in time so if that much of an issue for you decent odds he won't have them then.

@Apophis71 - sigh…thanks for passing along. I’d still prefer to not see them.

@Astroman - I do get that, even with the half decent explanation for them was never a fan just as I wasn't for what they went with for Mystique but till we get the main timeline version it is what it is and can overlook it.

Anyone else think or feel that all of the characters with the original actors are going to be killed off in the first 30 minutes of the film? I think that as Doom takes over the multiverses, he is going to battle with the old Fox characters and kill them all. So all of the excitement we are having for all these nostalgic characters is going to be over in the first act.

@Coach - probably.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 6/15/2025, 1:47 PM
@Coach - perhaps but I doubt it

I think it’s more likely we get these X-Men teaming up alongside the Avengers , New Avengers & Fantastic 4 against Doom and his army.

Honestly I think given the few X-Men characters that have been officially announced (we might get more so we’ll see) , what if these characters are the last few remaining survivors of their world that was already destroyed by Doom.

We got Xavier, Magneto ,Mystique ,Cyclops ,Beast ,Gambit & Nightcrawler.

If this is the the same Beast we saw at the end of the Marvels , all we saw there were that they seemed to be in some ship so perhaps that’s were the survivors are hiding?

@Coach - I doubt it.

They wouldnt have announced all of them as important characters for doing that early in the movie. Not to mention that Feige and co. likely want the X-Men on Secret Wars too.
