AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Confirm Katherine Langford’s Mysterious Cut Role - SPOILERS

Last October, Golden Globe nominee Katherine Langford of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why was added to the cast of Avengers: Endgame, creating a stir among the Marvel fandom about who she could be portraying.

Last October, Katherine Langford was revealed to have a key role in the then untitled fourth Avengers film. Fast forward to the present and it's now a well-documented fact that Langford was nowhere to be found in the Russo Bros.-directed pic.

Appearing on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Joe and Anthony finally confirmed who Langford was originally going to portray and how she factored into the film.

"There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station," said the elder Russo, confirming a rumor that first surfaced back in November.

Joe went on to add, "The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant. But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie."

Test audiences are the reason the scene ultimately didn't make it into the film, as they didn't realize that Langford was playing a future version of Morgan Stark. "What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level," explained Anthony.

If test audiences saw the footage, then it's likely that it might show up as a deleted scene on the blu-ray/DVD. Or perhaps there will be (dare we say it?) an extended cut!

Morgan Stark Tales of Suspense vol. 1 #68

In the comics, there is a Morgan Stark, only he's the cousin of Tony Stark. His father ended up surrendering his shares of Stark Industries to Howard Stark, causing Morgan to become bitterly jealous of Tony. Created in Tales of Suspense Vol. 1 #68 (1965), Morgan has appeared sporadically throughout the comics as a low-level Iron Man villain with ties to Count Nefaria.

Morgan Stark Ultimate Marvel Team-Up

In the now defunct Ultimate Universe, Morgan Stark is once again Tony Stark's cousin but he has a more benevolent nature. He and Tony are captured by Guatemalan guerrilla terrorists in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, who want Tony to build them weapons. When Tony refuses, Morgan is killed and as a play on the original Yinsen sacrifice, his death inspires Tony to build a suit of armor and defeat his would-be captors.

Howard Stark III Invincible Iron Man #500

Back in 2010, Invincible Iron Man #500 was a major 90-page storytelling event that told a story in the present and in the year 2052. In the future, The Mandarin has enslaved Tony Stark, using him (and his arc reactor) as a power source to control the world. He also utilizes Tony and Pepper's son as his chief enforcer, War Machine. The only opposition The Mandarin faces in this dark future is from a band of freedom fighters called the Black Widows, led by Tony's granddaughter, Virginia "Ginny" Stark.

Ginny Stark Invincible Iron Man #500

While her father has been forced into donning a Deathlok-esque suit or armor and operating as War Machine on the Mandarin's behalf, his daughter is looking to stop him, take down The Mandarin and free her grandfather. This version of the character has the same red hair as Pepper Potts, and is a very skilled marksman and hand-to-hand fighter. By the time the story wraps up, Ginny sets about restoring World Order as the new Madame Masque.

Rhodey Stark Avengers Vol 5 24.NOW

In another time-traveling focused episode Iron Man 3030 journeys back to the past in Avengers 24.NOW to warn the Avengers of the present about impending calamity - a planet currently on a crash course with the Earth. The Avengers manage to save the day and it's revealed that Iron Man 3030 is named Rhodey Stark and is Tony's Stark's great-granddaughter. It seems she traveled back in time to warn Tony not about the approaching planet but that in the future, his fellow Avengers would soon be trying to kill him.

One question answered. Can't wait for the blu ray.

@Gose - hell yeah im gonna marathon Infinity War and Endgame til the wheels come off

I’m not sure why they wouldn’t simplify the concept and use the child actor for that Morgan instead.

@Chewtoy - I think they wanted the symmetry of having Thanos talk to a young daughter. Thanos is retrograde, seeking to preserve an idealized past that never really existed, while Tony is ever "the futurist". His sacrifice was for Morgan's future.

And yes, you could streamline it, but if I was in that editing room, Morgan and Happy talking about cheeseburgers was the perfect cap to that relationship for me.

@Spock0Clock - I completely agree

Makes sense, and now she's clear to play Rachel Summers in the MCU Excalibur. (Cast as one alternate-future-daughter to another.)

@Spock0Clock - Or... Jean Grey, or... the real Mary Jane Watson (no idea how they would explain this).

@Spock0Clock - Hell yeah, I'd love to see an Excalibur movie. And honestly, i wouldn't even mind if they did it before the Xmen - it's pretty clear they're waiting a while on them. to let the bad, bad taste of that nasty fox die out. and they have been talking about Capt Britain for a while now. whatever they are doign there could spin right into Excalibur.

@benjithegreat - The franchise I want to see on screen is the Exiles. Unfortunately, you'd need a pretty well established X Men universe to make it work. Endgame opened a few doors though, thematically.

Save her for Young Avengers. Morgan, Cassie Lang, Kate Bishop, Harley and Miles Morales

@Saga - Throw Teen Groot in there for good measure.

Makes sense why they cut it. I feel like that would've been a bit too confusing for General Audiences.
Vandalore

@L0RDbuckethead - idk. I'm glad they cut it for a different reason. People say it wouldn't work (Russos too so I believe them) but people seem to forget it worked earlier in the film when Antman met his aged up daughter. How genuine and emotionally charged both Rudd and the aged up Cassie actress played that scene was genuinely the first time I choked up a bit in Endgame. Its for that reason though that they already played on the "meeting your aged up daughter played by a different actress" angle that I'm glad they didnt reuse that angle for Tony and Morgan.

@PTM - I just think they thought it was a bit messy to introduce a new character (Morgan) and have her played by two different actresses in the same movie, even though it was at two different points in time.

@L0RDbuckethead -
"What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter." - Russo's

They did a time skip that broke the emotional association with most the characters during the movie - the reasoning they used makes no sense.
Nightwing1015

They're completely correct. I don't think that scene would really work

I get why it was taken out. They could’ve used the kid that already portrayed Morgan in the movie, but for me it wouldn’t have made a difference. The movie now already gives a solid ending to the Stark story
Spock0Clock

Endgame was already a shaggy beast of a movie, but I would have liked to see Hulk and Tony get short dialogues like this. Hulk with a final farewell from Natasha would have been a better way to exposit that Hulk tried to bring her back than him just saying it.
OuzoPowerMan
OuzoPowerMan - 5/6/2019, 3:54 PM
@Spock0Clock - This would also serve as a good farewell to Nat's character. Her death, and the team mourning her loss, felt too light.
