AVENGERS: ENDGAME VFX Producer Reveals Why The Team Suits And Captain Marvel's Costume Were CGI

Why did Marvel Studios bring the costumes worn by Earth's Mightiest Heroes as they travelled through time and Captain Marvel's suit to life with VFX? Surprisingly, there's actually a good reason for that!

There are a lot of visual effects in Avengers: Endgame but some fans have questioned what the need was for the Team Suits and Captain Marvel's costume to be brought to life with visual effects.

Well, in the video below, Visual Effects Producer Jen Underdahl has explained that it all boils down to the fact that they were running out of time and making them practically simply wasn't feasible.

"The time suits are a combination of Ant-Man, Tony Stark, and Guardians tech. That took quite a while for us to land on. By the time we got a final version, we were already in Principal Photography. We knew we were going to build them anyway, since they had to "nano" on and off with Tony's tech, and it ended up being that the costume department didn't have time to develop, fit, and fabricate all the costumes for those hero characters, so we ended up doing them digitally."

As we mentioned in our interview with Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, Brie Larson wore her regular Captain Marvel costume on set before it was changed during post-production to that version which was clearly based on what Mar-Vell wore in the comics.

The issue with this hero was that the designs simply weren't finished when shooting took place!

"Her suit, every time you see it in the movie, when she's in her full costume, is digital. Again, the designs for those suits were not ready in time for us to photograph Brie. When you saw her at the beginning, as she's rescuing Tony Stark, when you see her come back, when she's talking to Nat in the Avengers compound, with Rocket and Nebula, and then in the final battle when she comes back and kind of saves the day, that's all the digital suit."

It's amazing how flawlessly VFX is able to make these changes and, had we not been told, it's fair to say that most of us wouldn't have even realised that these costumes weren't real. What do you guys think? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place and find out more in the video below.

It's either all a joke or none of it is.

I don’t know if budget-wise digitally creating the costumes was more feasible too, I don’t mind them doing this in the future too. The team suits and Captain Marvel’s looked great.

OT: I’ve been trying out the Disney+ trial period, and I gotta say the amount of movies and series it offers is very limited. I know that from november onward they’re gonna drop more movies and series, but in my opinion the subscription isn’t worth it right now

@MalseMarcel - yeah probably cause it’s the trial

@ItsMilesMorales - I know, but as far as the announced movies and series go, I’m not really convinced yet

@MalseMarcel - How do you get a trial?? Is it Netherlands only right now or can I somehow get access (US)?

Whether it's full mocap, or digitally painting over the suits in post, Marvel needs to tone it down with the CGI. It's so obvious and distracting. Hopefully that's one thing Sony scraps with the new Spider-Man movie.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - No one even knew the suits were fully CGI until they mentioned it.

The quantum suits do look amazing, but Marvel over uses cg sooooo much.

The suits looked very realistic which was fine here, but the CGI does need to tone down a bit when being used for costuming.

Remember this? Practical and looked damn good

Panther looked dope as hell without any CGI added to the suit

Then they decided to add some. I remember the first 2 trailers, this shot had no CGI on the suit

@BlackBeltJones - They didn't add CGI on top of the suit. If they just added CGI on the first shot it would look a lot better than the second.

No, what they did instead was completely reshoot the scene and then replaced whatever suit Chadwick was wearing with a full CGI construct. They did the same thing in Civil War a bunch of times.

Looking at the second image you can immediately tell something is not right with Chadwick's body. A lot of people complain about the CGI in Black Panther, but the same thing happened in Civil War too. The main difference is that Chadwick didn't have to move around a lot with his helmet off, so it looked a lot better. But it's still the same practice in both movies.

I don't get why they have to do it. Those gifs above you show how much Marvel and whatever VFX team they had ruined Rachel Morrison's shots and replaced it with something a lot more generic and fake looking.

@Necropolitan - the cinematography in BP is lowkey gorgeous at times.

I don't understand the need to add the generic reshot stuff but it is what it is. A good sign for the future is Eternals being shot on film apparently.

Also, Morrison and Coogler wanted to initially shoot on film, but obviously they couldn't. Despite all that, she said she will come back.

.....all of these kinds of films use a ton of cg.

I swear sometimes it seems like people complain, just to complain.

I wonder how in the next 10 years these will look and compare/stand the test of time when the next big Avengers event arrives.

The special effects here were incredible.

@Synthesis

Because if it isn't done EXACTLY like they want regardless of the fact that they can't tell the difference, then their voice must heard by all!!!

Change how you make your record smashing movies Marvel or we will riot!!!

@Heroic - okay I read it now.. I think I summarized the reason adequately.

Well it makes sense they had to use CGI since the costume department didn't have time. I didn't think about whether they were CGI or not when I saw Endgame the first time so clearly it didn't bother me.

Agree with the sentiments above though. If you honestly have a practical suit ready, and you've shot scenes with said practical suit, why replace the whole damn thing with CGI? I don't understand it.

@MadKingCipher

I think that the was the biggest issue for BP was the fact that it was so close to IW. It's not like they didn't put the money into it ($200M budget) I just think that the more talented teams were moved over to work on IW seeing as that film will always take priority over any solo film no matter who the character is.

But now BP2 IS the IW of 2022 so it will received all the time and attention it needs to be a complete masterpiece.

@LongMayHeReign - May 6 too. That's an upgrade from February. Prime summer territory. They have confidence in the sequel, a very good sign.

Also Ryan Coogler was very close to creating a masterpiece the first time with no big budget experience. I can't even imagine how glorious Black Panther 2 will be.

For relatively skin-tight suits, it makes sense for them to CG a lot. It helps to keep the suit form-fitted and mobile in a way that real anatomy and fabric doesn't. And it can avoid "Keaton Neck".

But when reasonable, I always prefer a practical suit. Especially when it comes to bigger bulky designs like the Mark 4 Iron Man suit. That shit is gorgeous when the practical LEDs are actually lighting the scene.

That's [frick]ing art right there.

The huge cast was a big part of the production cost of making Endgame... you don’t hold up shooting or try to get everyone back for reshoots despite their many different schedules if you have a solution that you can use in post, so I get it.
Comicbookart
Comicbookart - 9/12/2019, 5:50 PM
That's incredible. I didn't even notice the team suits were CG. They all looked like a textured suit you could touch.

Now the final battle, the CGI was very noticeable. But that's to be expected when you have so many VFX in one shot. The technology is improving though.
