AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Nearly Buried Thanos In The Bodies Of His Victims And Saw Him Face The Living Tribunal

We've known for a while that The Living Tribunal was supposed to make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity Warbut the movie's writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have now revealed even more details about that scrapped sequence.

According to Markus, "[Kevin Feige] wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the sort of psychedelic aspect of the ‘Starlin-verse,’ where people travel inside their eyeballs and things like that. And so we stuck the Living Tribunal in the movie." As for how the character would have factored into this adventure, it would have reportedly taken place during that battle on Titan.

"[As] Thanos and Doctor Strange came to blows, Doctor Strange blew Thanos’ mind and sent him through the mindscape," Markus explained before McFeely likened it to the Sorcerer Supreme's trippy visit to the Mutiverse in his solo movie.

"[The] idea was that [Thanos is] sort of zipping through the universe being presented with all of his many, many crimes. So bodies are being thrown at him, he lands and things turn into bodies, hands are grasping at him, and it’s just really kind of grim," McFeely said. "And at the end he gets dumped in front of the Living Tribunal who judges him guilty. It was great."

"When you introduce the idea of the Living Tribunal, it does open up a whole new era. I don’t know if my grandmother would understand that." Markus added: "Also, if that guy exists, why is Thanos a problem? Just have him smack him around a little bit." It was have been amazing to see this but the writer added that the sequence "sucked the air" out of the action-packed sequence.

Needless to say, this would have been a highlight, but it's easy enough to understand why it was cut. Are you disappointed the The Living Tribunal didn't appear in Avengers: Infinity War?

There are some glorious shots from the final battle, but the highlight has to be Steve Rogers standing alone against the Mad Titan and his entire army. That's Captain America through and through.

That actually sounds pretty rad. Can’t wait for Dr. Strange 2!

@Fritzthecat - I'm confused. Why isn't Captain America called Thor in that picture, where he's holding Mjolnir? Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Strange. Very, very strange.

Sounds like an Injustice move

I initially read that as “Stalin-Verse” and got a little turned around.
But Living Tribunal would’ve been awesome to see, I agree though, that those figures like Eternity need a little more lead in than from an extended action sequence

The movie needed something like this imo. Something that comes out of left field and throws off some expectations.

@KingCipher - I was talking about Endgame. IW didnt lack much imo

@KingCipher - yeah, wrong article I guess. An added element to dive deeper into the Cosmic Marvel side would have been nice

@KingCipher - The only way to make Tribunal work in the Infinity Saga would have been to have him show up AFTER Thanos did the Snap.

The Living Tribunal is only one of two characters more powerful than the Infinity Gauntlet. He is unaffected by it and is able to undo anything it does. So having him judge Thanos guilty BEFORE Thanos even gets the full Gauntlet wouldn't have made any sense because Thanos would have been defeated and that would have been the end of the story.

It ONLY makes sense if Tribunal shows up AFTER the Snap and judges that Thanos did not break any cosmic laws in his quest to gain the Gauntlet and then leaves him be. This is how it was in the comics and it makes sense. Tribunal judging Thanos guilty is a quick, deus machina ending that would have sucked. Either that, or he judges Thanos guilty and then Thanos defeats Tribunal, which would have been just ridiculousm

@CorndogBurglar - I would have liked to see them trying to seek out the Living Tribunal, or something along those lines. Instead of figuring out time travel like we've seen in countless movies, something more imaginative would have been nice
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/28/2019, 9:01 AM
@Ryguy88 - Agree 100%. As soon as we knew this movie would have time travel I felt mind of deflated about the whole thing.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah, actually I read elsewhere that that scene was envisioned for Endgame and not Infinity War. Might be a mix up in this article.

@Ryguy88 - I could understand having that sort of reaction initially, but all things considered, it was at least handled in a what's probably a bit more uncommon way. As shown by the dialog some of them literally having with each other, the BTTF, Terminator, etc framework for time travel does tend to be the default approach in genre stories of the last few decades. And they did at least try to approach the mechanics of what they were doing and how they were using it with a scientificly inclined attitude. Though obviously neither are possible (at least far as we currently know) the multiverse/alt timeline version of time travel makes a lot more sense to me than the classic "change your past to change your present". It feels more logical that the universe would simply be able to add onto itself as opposed to having what fundamentally already exists change entirely. There were likely still some plot holes that arose, it's incredibly rare in fiction to have time travel central to your narrative and have it be totally clean logic-wise as a whole, but I really don't think anything too major, like bigger things that are forgiven in other past movies. And as we had confirmed last week, the single biggest one was done very much by design, the 2012 Loki version that's now seemingly irrevocably changed.

@newhire13 - the scene described wouldnt have made sense to happen in endgame. For starters the Thanos that snapped everything was dead by the time Strange came back. The Thanos that could have fought strange hadn't done the snap yet, bringing you back to the issue Conrdog brought up.

Well some of the same sort of ground was kinda covered in the Gamora scene on Vormir.

"You kill and torture, and call it mercy. The universe has judged you. You asked it for a prize, and IT TOLD YOU NO."

that's still one of my favorite line deliveries in the whole movie, and Zoe Saldana's acting throughout the entire sequence is amazing.

@ShellHead - I hate to say it, but honestly anyone with a decent familiarity with this site at this point, we pretty much know what we're getting on this particular byline, so something about fooling/shaming me comes to mind.

Ironically, I personally apparently completely missed those previous ones, cause this is indeed the first time I've ever seen this specific deleted/considered material talked about at all lol

@CaptCoulson - The more of your comments I read the more I like you.

This is the first time I've seen this story also. And I'm on this site daily. So if someone like me can miss this it says quite a bit.

I get so tired of people complaining about the editors around here as if someone is forcing them at gunpoint to click on articles...

In the MCU, you could make the argument that Thanos is an agent of the Living Tribunal since his original goal was to force a balance between the living and resources.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/28/2019, 1:55 PM
@Reeds2Much - I've never heard the Living Tribunal explained that way. I always thought he was the Judge, Jury, and Executioner of people that are thought to be breaking cosmic laws.

Sometimes he judges them guilty, other times not. But I've never heard it explained that his decisions are based on balance between the living and universal resources.
Reeds2Much
Reeds2Much - 7/28/2019, 2:24 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Well, not living and resources per se. In the books Tribunal safeguards the multiverse from imbalances with mystical forces. Mostly keeping one universe from becoming too powerful versus others (which is why he was killed at the start of that last Secret Wars event)

'm just saying, Tribunal is about balance, MCU Thanos is about balance. Might not be the best argument, but it can be made.
