Following in the footsteps of The Avengers was never going to be an easy task but with Joss Whedon back at the helm, Avengers: Age of Ultron gave it a good try back in 2015. Introducing new heroes and a terrifying villain in the form of Ultron, the sequel brought an awful lot to the table and generated a lot of excitement among fans. While Thanos will no doubt be an even more formidable threat in Infinity War, we're now taking a look back at the movie by sharing some incredible concept art.

We're keeping things robotic (well, sort of) for the time being as after taking a look at alternate designs for both Ultron and The Vision, the focus is now on Tony Stark's amazing Hulkbuster armour!

As you can see by clicking on either one of the buttons below to view the full list of artwork, Marvel went through a lot of different designs while trying to come up with the perfect suit for Iron Man to use to do battle with The Hulk when he lost control. From versions reminiscent of a certain X-Men villain to some which are just completely out there, you definitely need to check these out...

The Juggernaut Strikes!

Fans of the X-Men will no doubt recognise these alternate takes on Iron Man's Hulkbuster armour as he bears a striking resemblance to The Juggernaut, a character we'll no doubt see in the MCU now!

Hulk Vs. Juggernaut

Seriously, blur your eyes; this could just as easily be The Juggernaut that the Jade Giant is doing battle with here! Despite that, it still would have been cool seeing this version make it to the big screen.

Iron Man Stands Tall

We'd seen Iron Man don a lot of different suits by the time Avengers: Age of Ultron rolled around but these images show us just how much bigger in scale the Hulkbuster armour is in comparison!

A Very Different Hulkbuster

This is very much a bare-bones version of the Hulkbuster armour and while it might have been cool to see it in action in the movie, it's fair to say it wouldn't have been anywhere near as satisfying.

More Alternate Takes

As you can see, Marvel went through a huge array of designs trying to come up with the perfect look for Iron Man's Hulkbuster armour and each of these have elements it would have been great seeing on the big screen. Perhaps we'll see them utilised further down the line now? Either way, the effort made to bring this version of the character to the big screen was clearly immense and it paid off in a big way.

The Hulkbuster Takes Shape

As you can see, this is the version of the armour we ended up getting in the movie and it's definitely very cool. However, an argument could be made that Avengers: Infinity War's looks better.

A More Badass Hulkbuster

Maybe it's just me but The Hulbuster looks a little tougher and imposing here. That could be because the final design was a little less blocky and had much smoother edges to be more visually pleasing.

A Chunkier Design

Once again, these Hulkbuster armours are much chunkier and look a lot more brutal as a result. However, it's still easy to see how elements from these influenced the final version of Iron Man's suit.

Hulkbuster Overpowers Hulk

The Hulkbuster we ended up seeing on screen wasn't that much bigger than The Hulk but this version towers over the Jade Giant and that could have changed the fight between them in a huge way.

One Of The Movie's Coolest Moments

The moment The Hulk and Hulbuster punch each other at the same time to seemingly test who really is the strongest one of all was seriously cool and here we see how that was imagined by Marvel.

More Juggernaut

While these are a little more colourful, The Juggernaut influence still seeps through but it's important to note that both characters do look relatively similar in the comic books so it may be coincidental.

Fiiiiight!

The Hulk stares down his friend turned foe here (or should that be the other way around?) and this keyframe is a fun way of showing us the work which went into dreaming up this epic encounter.

Hulkbuster Arrives

Joss Whedon had to come up with a clever way of throwing The Hulkbuster armour into the mix and here we see it being delivered to the streets moments before it goes to war with the Green Goliath.

Lol, imagine if Tony brought his Hulkbuster suit to the Civil War airport fight?

Cap would change his mind on the Accords real quick.

@KWilly - for Tony being a genius he forgets to do the obvious thing a lot of the time. If I was him I would have brought it. Eat this Giant Man lol.

@KWilly - It would have gone against the very thing he went to the airport to do, which was bring them using as very little force as possible.

I don't know how people watched Civil War and still think that airport battle was about the Avengers being so angry with each other that they just wanted to kill each other. Only person with such motivation was Black Panther.

Team Cap was trying to get to Serbia for answers and Team Iron Man was trying to bring them in.

@BlindWedjat - Right! Initially it was just a friendly scrimmage, until mid-fight when things started to heat up

@KWilly - Honestly, I think Cap would fare better against the Hulkbuster than the standard suit. It's got way less mobility in close quarters combat, even less than Hulk. You saw Blonsky dance around Hulk in TIH; Cap might be able to do the same thing. And I think with the SHIELD, Cap would've been able to break pieces off still.

I actually like that Juggernaught look. It looks better than the film version. I'm sure it didn't look right in motion, but as artwork it looks amazing.

The Hulkbuster is such a sweet armor. I'm very happy with what we got but there's not a single bad design here.

I really liked the Hulkbuster, but whenever I look at concepts and such for big robot battle suits, I always end up wondering where the person inside fits. If it’s big enough, you can imagine their whole body crammed into the torso (and the Hulkbuster is probably there), but otherwise I can’t help but think “There’s no way the suit’s joins line up with the pilot’s joints inside.” And then I just imagine arms and legs being snapped like twigs whenever the robot suit moves.

@Chewtoy - I’m guessing his legs and arms don’t always fit into the arms and legs of the suit.

@Chewtoy - OMG I thought I was the only one who does that lol. I was just watching IronMan the other day and when Obediah (however you spell it) opens the front of his suit at the end I was trying to figure out how his body fits into it lol....too funny

@TRexx21 - Normally, it makes more sense if they are kneeling or sitting in some sort of pod in the middle. Obi could've maybe been sitting?

@HarrowRed - That was my assumption too, it's no way his limbs could move with the suit

Yes, they do (almost all) resemble Juggs, but then again, in the comics, etc, they always have been reminiscient of that style (the flat, wide helmet, the dark reddish design, the huge, bulky body, etc). It makes sense too - it's better not try and leave as little for Hulk to get ahold of, because then, it's coming off!
