Joe & Anthony Russo Say More Marvel Movies Are "Certainly A Possibility" Amid Avengers 7 Rumors

Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo are not ruling out the possibility of helming more Marvel Studios movies after Avengers: Endgame...

Say what you will about their non-MCU projects, but Joe and Anthony Russo have directed some of the most popular and profitable Marvel Studios movies, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Clearly eager to recapture some of that old magic, Marvel approached the brothers to helm this year's Avengers: Doomsday and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, and if those movies prove to be the smash hits we're all hoping for, there's every reason to believe that Kevin Feige will do his best to keep them around.

Recently, a rumor did the rounds that the Russos were kicking around the idea of directing another MCU film, and that there might even be tentative plans in place for a seventh Avengers installment.

Deadline has shared some quotes from the Russos' recent SXSW London appearance, and the filmmakers definitely seem open to the idea of continuing their working relationship with Marvel Studios.

“When we did Endgame, of course, we [thought] we’ve completed—it was our fourth Marvel film—we had completed a story arc that we began in The Winter Soldier, and for us, it was very much intended to be an ending,” Anthony said. “And so, I will say this: the stories that we’re focused on now are complete. Doomsday and Secret Wars speak with one another as two films, and they form a complete expression.”

Anthony also indicated that there could be new stories to tell down the line, however.

“Whether or not we all collaborate with Marvel beyond that is certainly a possibility. But right now, the vision, the narrative vision, is just through Secret Wars at this point.”

Joe added, “We’re just going to wait and see what we look like in photos in 2028, and then we’ll let you know.”

It's impossible to predict how the MCU landscape will look post-Secret Wars, but if the Russos do return, there's a chance they'll be taking charge of a movie in the "Mutant Saga."

The Russos are still hard at work on Doomsday (there are rumors that there might be some behind-the-scenes issues to iron out), and will continue to fine-tune the movie until it's "taken out of their hands in November. Secret Wars, meanwhile, is already in the early stages of pre-production.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars were hit with significant delays last year, with Doomsday now set to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Secret Wars positioned for December 17, 2027.

"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made. We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves”, said The Russos in a statement after the SDCC panel.

Doomsday will star:

Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent

Along with Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Everyone has plans until the box office numbers are in, so let's not get ahead of ourselves this soon. Doomsday is by far the riskiest movie Marvel has made; it'll either send the MCU back to its pre-2020 glory days, or it'll be the final nail in the coffin.

@TheJok3r -

you're too gloomy. even if it blows up spectacularly, they will just have to commit to lower-stakes storytelling.

if that means we finally get another Blade or equivalent low budget fare, then i'll still be happy.

they built all this on being resourceful anyway, since they didn't have their heavy-hitters to start with.

@themawisdead - I don't know how accurate this is, but there are reports claiming that the budget is between $300-400 million; if that's the case, then I'm not being gloomy, just financially realistic. Marvel has been taking financial hits for a few years now; Disney isn't going to keep doing this forever. Look what happened to Star Wars after the Rise of Skywalker; they shifted the franchise from a big screen event series to your every day streaming slop. If Doomsday fails, which I don't think it will, but the possibility is higher than it should be, then I fully expect the MCU to either be put on ice or shift to streaming.

@TheJok3r -

i agree with you, but the franchise still has too much financial & storytelling potential for them to throw in the towel completely.

if they ultimately have to reassess how they go about creating these films, i don't feel that's a bad thing.

Id rather see them focus on a single character like the did with Winter Soldier instead of having them do nothing but Averger Movies.

i really want them as senior advisors on story threads. that way, they don't have to commit to the gauntlet of the enormous crossover films, and they can maintain some better continuity in the next era.

@themawisdead - i like that idea…

Given they have worked with ensembles alot , they would be good in helping track each characters arc and appearance thus keeping the continuity as straightforward as possible.

"Certainly A Possibility"

Well, since it isn't "impossible" (which goes without saying), that would mean it's possible, which would then also go without saying.

I'm just saying.. 🤪

Cherry into The Gray Man into Electric State, they've somehow gotten worse with each subsequent movie outside of Marvel. In their shoes I'd also be planning to just stay with Marvel for the long haul.

@1stDalek - I haven’t seen Cherry and the Electric State but i found The Gray Man enjoyable as like a modern 90’s action flick.

I feel like they might just be stronger with Marvel where both can amplify each others strengths and cover each others weaknesses.

If Doomsday and Secret Wars are great movies, I say lock em up and never let them go.

I know the Russo’s haven’t had the best luck post EG with their various projects but they were able to deliver 4 of the best MCU films if not CBM’s in general back to back which isn’t an easy feat thus i still have faith in them for Doomsday & SW to an extent…

In regards to them doing more projects with Marvel , i would be for it as long as it’s not another Avengers film since i would like to see new blood there tbh.

I mean , just imagine a Russo Bros Wolverine film huh?.
