Armie Hammer On That Defunct Live-Action JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie And The Pressure of THE LONE RANGER

Armie Hammer says it's a good thing that George Miller Justice League movie never happened, he wasn't ready for the role of Batman at that point in his career.

Speaking to Crave Online, actor Armie Hammer who's fast becoming a Hollywood rising star thanks to The Social Network, J.Edgar and the upcoming Mirror, Mirror and Lone Ranger movie talks briefly about what it was like being in Australia while Justice League was still a "go" and being in a similar pressure-filled situation five years later with The Lone Ranger.

QUESTION: You’ve really blown up in the last year but this could’ve happened even earlier. You were working on Justice League with George Miller. Did you get a taste of this back then if that movie had gone?

I hate to say it, but thankfully it didn't because I probably wouldn't have been ready for anything then. I didn't have the head on my shoulders that I feel I do now. Hopefully I'll say the same thing five years from now. Hopefully I'm always learning more and stuff like that, but had it happened then, like looking back and knowing what I knew then I wouldn't have been ready for it. I wouldn't have been able to handle it. It's a lot at twenty five years old to be playing the title character of a movie where the budget is humongous and it has to work. That's a lot of pressure to handle at twenty five, but at the same time you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm really excited about it, like I get to do things that other twenty five years olds might not get to do. So, I'm having fun and am appreciative as much as possible.

QUESTION: Was the Justice League thing a good education for you as a young actor, having that big budget film not go?

Yeah, yeah. It was amazing as a young actor to even get to experience that kind of a budget. I think that they were talking about, I mean this could be hearsay, who knows, but I think the budget was close to $300 million. I don't know the specifics, but it was huge, huge to the point where I remember being down in Australia and they were just throwing money around. Just like, “Wherever the whole cast wants to go to dinner every night? Sure. Pay with this wad of cash.” It was extravagant and then to have it all fall apart was a really good reality check. It's like, “Hey, nothing in this business is real. Don't forget that.” It's like, “Oh, yeah, right, right.”

QUESTION:What's it like being first on the call-sheet for a $200 million dollar western?

You'd have to ask Johnny.

QUESTION:Even when you are the Lone Ranger?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I can tell you that to play the title character, at first it was a ton of pressure, I'll be honest. I remember nights before we started shooting just laying in bed, going, “How much does this cost? What's it called? Oh, man, that's me. Oh geez. What about this? If this goes wrong…” You just kind of work yourself into these ridiculous tizzies, but that's only because you're doing it to yourself. As soon as I got on set for the first day, we got the first day of shooting out of the way and I remember at lunch going back to my trailer after eating and just kind of going, “This feels just like making a movie. This is what I love. This is no different,” and it's really not. It's a bunch of dudes in a room with a camera doing what they love. It's the smallest-feeling big movie that I've ever been a part of. This feels smaller in scale because of the attention everyone is putting into the most minute detail [more] than even Snow White did. It's at least twice the size, but it feels like a small, big movie.

QUESTION:Have you enjoyed learning the daring do, the fencing for Mirror Mirror and the shooting for Lone Ranger?

Yeah. That's one of the perks of this job, like, not only do you get to go to amazing places all over the world, but I was learning to sword fight and now I'm learning to throw lassos and shoot pistols and ride horses. Who knows, on the next one maybe I'll learn something new. It's fun. You get to be a jack of all trades, master of none, but you get to still jack around a bit.

That Justice League film was to star D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman and Adam Brody as The Flash with rapper/actor Common as the Green Lantern. The production made it to Australia for rehearsals before being shutdown due to the combination of The 2007 Writer's Strike and the loss of a 40% tax break from Australia nixed the project.

Jonny Depp and Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger and Tonto

'Justice League: Mortal' would have been released in 2011 with George Miller as a director, and the cast WOULD have been D.J. Cotrona (Superman), Armie Hammer (Batman), Megan Gale (Wonder Woman), Common (Green Lantern), Adam Brody (The Flash), Hugh Keays-Byrne (The Martian Manhunter), Santiago Cabrera (Aquaman), Jay Baruchel (Maxwell Lord), and Teresa Palmer (Talia al Ghul).

I am glad that movie got cancelled. Batman would have been taller than Supes! And who was it playing John Stewart?

Although, Armie does look alot like Captain Planet.

batman being taller than supes isn't a terrible thing imo even if inaccurate to the comics. i wish he was supes still though.

Never seen him in a film so I can't honestly say weather I would have liked him as Batman or not.

What's weird is it was only about a year and a half ago when I heard that this movie was even considered. There certainly wasn't much buzz for the film.

i would have loved to see him in classic Fleischer inspired type film like in all those cartoons from the 40's. that would have been cool as shit.

Is anyone just a little curious what the Justice League movie could have been like? I sure am. Who knows it could have been good. I am glad it didn't happen because I want DC to make a cinematic universe like Marvel has. Whether your a DC or Marvel fan you have to admit that Marvel has handled their films perfectly.

MARVEL HAS ALWAYS DID THEIR STUFF BETTER..DC HAS TRIED TO COPY OR TRIED TO FOLLOW THEM IN THE PAST..MARVEL CHARACTERS HAVE MORE REAL THEMES THAT PEOPLE COULD RELATE TO, WHEN THEY LET OTHERS DO THEIR CHARACTERS IN THE PAST THEY MADE THEIR OWN STUDIO..GETTING BOUGHT BY DISNEY ONLY MADE THEM MORE OF A FORCE..DC PUSHES STUFF OUT SLOWER.

If "Justice League" were to have been made, Nolan may not have done a third Batman. I'm guessing DC wouldn't want conflicting products using the same character. At least they didn't try to make the League with all the goofball characters they used in that last low budget version.

Nice Gif...I still think Ryan Reynolds should appear in the after credits scene of Man of Steel in his Green Lantern outfit. Then have the other heroes like the Flash and Wonder Woman show up after. What I mean is those heroes are not known, yet that is, until later. Then you can do Flash and Wonder Woman movies and have Supes and Green Lantern(both) make cameos in their movies, esentially tying all the characters together for a Justice League film.

I'm telling you, if The Avengers work and makes a ton of money, DC will follow in Marvels footsteps. This also depends on Man of Steel making an impact at the box office and a possible Green Lantern sequel.

I don't know why no one ever mentions this but the JLA movie was going to be motion capture. So any qualms about actors heights or looks don't really matter. And word is the script was great. Personally I think George Miller's Justice League is probably one of the great un-made films. It's too bad he tried to make it during the writer's strike AND during a current ongoing Batman series.

Why cancel the Justice League movie? It would have been awesome if they had Joss Whedon on board to direct and Christopher Nolan as producer.

That's new to me, and now I'm thanking God it's cancelled.
WarnerBrother

@ImmortalVigilante

The public reason JLM was cancelled was the 2007 writers strike and the loss of tax credits from the Australian government. The real reason was Nolan put the kabosh
on the film when it became apparent that the script for JLM built off events in Batman Begins. One of those events being the falling out of Bruce and Ras.

The film also built on themes Nolan was getting into in TDK which was in post production in late 2007.Those themes being the use of surveillance technology by Batman.

Finally,JLM used elements that have found their way into TDKR such as the
(likely) appearance of Talia Al Ghul as the new head of the league of Shadows.

The honchos at WB in December 2007/January 2008 knew that TDK was going to be a bigger hit then Batman Begins based off what they were seeing from Nolan and the massive amount of media hype created by Ledger's tragic death about that time.

It's a no brainer that WB wanted a trilogy from Nolan, so they canned JLM when it became noted that Nolan would be offended by another DC film stepping on his work.

A Justice League movie is a good idea. That one wasn't. Hammer would make an awesome Aquaman. Him or Ryan McPartlin.

He's a pretty big dude, and actually a really good actor, If Cavill didn't get the role as superman i would have loved to see Armie as Superman.

Whats funny is this tho...

Brandon Routh is now being called the poor man's Keanu Reeves, I dunno what that means exactly lol but everything about Superman Returns was so wrong, wrong doesn't mean a bad movie, it was just very 2 dimensional, reminded me of the kinda superman stories id come up with as a kid based solely on the fact that the only Superman mythology i knew at 5 years old was from the donner movies.
