Hope Larson Throws Her Hat In The Ring To Write BATGIRL

It was only yesterday that Roxane Gay expressed interest in writing the now Joss Whedon less BATGIRL project for Warner Bros and the DCEU. Now Comic Book writer Hope Larson has joined her.

Following the news that The Avengers director Joss Whedon had dropped out of directorial duties on the Batgirl film over at Warner Bros. citing story issues, many thought that would be the last that we heard from the project for some time and that it would join the pile of DCEU films that never come to fruition.

Then just yesterday Roxane Gay, author of An Untamed State and a collection of essays titled Bad Feminist responded to the news on Twitter by tagging DC Comics and offering to write the film for Michele Wells, Vice-President of Content Strategy at DC Entertainment to respond with an invite for Gay to contact her for further discussion.

Well it would appear that another writer has followed suit: Hope Larson who is  actually working on the current Batgirl run for DC Comics has also made her interest known on the social media website Twitter.

No word yet on whether Michele Wells has gotten in touch with her either, now according to The Tracking Board,  new DC Chief at Warner Bros Walter Hamada has plans to seek a female director to helm the project, hoping no doubt to achieve the same success that the Patty Jenkins helmed Wonder Woman gave the studio so it would make sense that the project could also have a female writer as well and Roxane Gay and Hope Larson are certainly solid choices.

Especially considering the latter is literally writing the character in comics now, obviously the two mediums are very different and with different needs but it would certainly be interesting and an exciting prospect to have someone who not only knows comics but also the character to work on the big screen adaptation.

What do you think? Would you like to see Larson write a cinematic Batgirl? Are you a fan of the current run in comics? Or would you like to see someone else take scripting duties and if so who? Leave your thoughts below.

@dracula - she’s even tweeted about it. She wants to write it, I’m so down for Simone. Great writer

A comic writer to write Batgirl? Simone or bust. She had years of experience with not just Batgirl but also Oracle. Different iterations of the character across times and universes. To me, her Barbara Gordon is the best Barbara Gordon and if she doesn’t write it then she should at least be brought in to help with it. Leaving Simone out of this project would be a massive mistake on WB’s part. I mean, I know it’s nothing in comparison to the film industry, but the reaction the comic industry had when she was forced out of Batgirl was significant enough that she was brought back in issues later.
