Joss Whedon's leap from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the DC Films Universe for Batgirl is very exciting indeed, and while we know his movie will take its cues from The New 52, not much else has been revealed as the filmmaker starts prepping for his first DC Comics adaptation. Whedon has however been dropping a few clues, with the latest pertaining to his interest in the hero's origin story.
"She came up, and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, What’s her damage?" The Avengers director explained in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "She didn’t have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life? How intense and driven that person is … I just couldn’t stop thinking about it."
That explains Whedon's interest in Batgirl then and it will be interesting to see where this story winds up being set. Will it tell Barbara Gordon's origin story or stick to her return to the life of a superhero after being attacked by The Joker as some sites have reported? We'll have to wait and see.
One thing which is obviously going to be fun to find out is whether the likes of Ben Affleck (Batman) and Jared Leto (The Joker) will appear, but one thing we can safely say is that Batgirl is in safe hands!
