The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that we'll be paying a visit to 1920s Gotham City next year in Warner Bros. Animation's Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham

We already know Legion of Super-Heroes is coming early next year, with Justice League: Warworld and Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios among the other previously announced projects. This one, however, is particularly intriguing and is actually inspired by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace and Troy Nixey's 2001 graphic novel of the same name.

Part of the DC Elseworlds line, this adaptation is set to be produced and co-directed by DCAU vet Sam Liu (Batman: The Killing Joke), with Christopher Berkeley (Young Justice) also co-directing from a script by Jase Ricci (DC Super Hero Girls).

In The Doom That Came to Gotham, explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashes an ancient evil, and returns to Gotham after being away for two decades. Batman battles Lovecraftian supernatural forces and encounters allies and enemies such as Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, and James Gordon.

When it comes to the cast, Jensen Ackles won't be reprising his role as Batman, with A Million Little Things star David Giuntoli instead set to lend his voice to the Dark Knight.

Elsewhere, we can look forward to seeing Tati Gabrielle as Kai Li Cain, Christopher Gorham as Oliver Queen, John DiMaggio as James Gordon, Patrick Fabian as Harvey Dent, Brian George as Alfred, and Jason Marsden as Dick Grayson and Young Bruce Wayne.

Supporting cast members include Karan Brar as Sanjay "Jay" Tawde, David Dastmalchian as Grendon, Navid Negahban as Ra's al Ghul, Emily O'Brien as Talia al Ghul and Martha Wayne, Tim Russ as Lucius Fox, Matthew Waterson as Jason Blood/Etrigan, Jeffrey Combs as Kirk Langstrom, William Salyers as Cobblepot, Gideon Adlon as Oracle, and Darin De Paul as Thomas Wayne.

Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham doesn't have an official release date quite yet, but is expected to arrive next Spring. We're sure this first look will be followed by a trailer and cover reveal, so stay tuned for updates!

God forbid we go 5 minutes without a Batman animated movie

@Twenty23Three -

They have the entire DC slate of characters and rights to their stories yet always focus on the bat. Too afraid to come out of their comfort zone as well as not believing in the other heroes.

@Twenty23Three - Yup, where is this fervor for animated adaptations of other DC heroes? So many animated Bat films but what about Question, Green Arrow, and Hawkman to name a few who have yet to get their due.

@GhostDog - The fervor is for making things that the regular citizens will buy.

How many times have the Question/GA and Hawkman had monthly books that couldn't sustain an audience and got cancelled?

If the unwashed masses won't buy it in bulk, it's unlikely to get a shot - no matter how cool the concept is.

@NinnesMBC @GhostDog - I’d love for them to do a series of animated movies based on cancelled movies. Burton/Cages Superman, Justice League Mortal, the Green Arrow Supermax film

Honestly, we should be getting these sorts of Batman stories in live-action at this point. Lovecraftian, supernatural, horror-tinged tales. I appreciate we are getting an animated adaptation for sure, but imagine a Del Toro-helmed, Lovecraftian Batman movie?

Will keep an eye out for the art style because it seems it'll be different than other ones.

This is [frick]ing awesome.

A Del Toro HPLian live action Batman film would be too much for the human psyche to withstand.

Thank god it's not part of the shared universe shit. They're actually adapting Mike Mignola's artwork.

Love the book, it's short and sweet. I hope they don't go crazy adding fight scenes; this is a detective tale first & foremost, very much Mignola writing closer to Lovecraft than his usual work.
