BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES May Beat THE AVENGERS Opening Weekend

The Dark Knight Rises isn't opening in 3D, but still has a very good chance of beating the opening weekend record set by Marvel's The Avengers earlier this year. Hit the jump for details on that and a rough idea of exactly how much Christopher Nolan's Batman finale cost to produce.

The Los Angeles Times reports that with just a few days until it finally hits the big screen, The Dark Knight Rises is generating more audience excitement than the last three highest grossing blockbusters (Marvel's The Avengers, The Hunger Games and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II). This has led analysts to predict that the highly anticipated threequel will gross upwards of $180 million during its opening weekend in North America. It's believe that it may even topple the impressive record of $207 million set by The Avengers. While the large amount of IMAX screens it is playing on will boost takings, the lack of 3D means it won't benefit from the higher ticket prices that the Marvel Studios movie did. Regardless, as was reported earlier this week, The Dark Knight Rises is set to have the biggest opening ever for a 2D movie and should have little trouble in nearing (or possibly surpassing) the $1 billion mark worldwide. According to the site, "The percentage of potential moviegoers who list the picture as their first choice among upcoming releases is six points higher than that of 'The Avengers' on the Monday before it opened, and seven points higher than 'Hunger Games'." Interest is much higher among men that women, although there is still a great deal of interest from the fairer sex. It is thought that The Dark Knight Rises' budget was around $230 million.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

IMAX tickets costs around the same amount as 3D. So, no, it will not be doing it without a boost in ticket prices.

Possibly. I still think it's unlikely that TDKR will make more than Avengers.

Way more 3d screens versus IMAX screens so unlikely but equally impressive imo. Avengers deserves every penny, hopefully will be able to say the same for TDKR.

Not a Nolanite. Not a Whedonite. Not a Marvelite. I'm a comic book fan and movie fanatic. I can say that TDKR WILL NOT make more than The Avengers. TDKR has IMAX on its side, sure. But that's not 3D, which can be shown at any theatre. IMAX requires certain specifications. TDKR will top at around $900million to barely over 1billion. It CANNOT surpass The Avengers which was 3D AND more "family oriented"/"kid safe".

Even I'LL say TDKR most likely won't obtain more money.

Because of
3D
Darkness

In my HUMBLE opinion, TDKR deserves just as much if not more than Avengers...but hey we should all root for the most intake in all CBMs. Well good ones, not shit like Green Lantern.

Oh and I actually saw TASM last week...I HATED it. Have no clue what in the hell people are seeing in it. It Barely equals the quality of the first Raimi one FOR ME. Garfield and Stone are great...and thats it. What the [frick] is with the girl with glasses, like what a strange running gag. Uncle Bens death got a whole 4 seconds before HEY LETS CHANGE SCENES. All the speeches ended so suddenly, it was just weird. Like holy shit Aunt May is missing the entire second half.

Ugh I have more but this isn't the place

@Luminus Also Avengers showed in IMAX and IMAX 3D so it defo has an massive advantage in terms of money making opportunities over a 2D or 2D IMAX film.

Not that it didn't deserve to earn a lot of money, I really enjoyed Avengers and it 12 hours I will be enjoying TDKR.
