Batman made his first appearance in Detective Comics No. 27 in May 1939. In the Spring of the following year, Batman No. 1, featuring the first appearances of The Joker and Catwoman appeared on newsstands. The Joker was created by Kane's assistant Jerry Robinson and Bill Finger supplied the look with a photo of actor Conrad Veidt in the movie "The Man Who Laughs."

Something related to this, and possibly just as interesting-- The Joker in the comics looks very much like Veidt's character from the movie "The Man Who Laughs", but the movie is based on a novel of the same name... in the novel, the same character lacks his ear-to-ear perminant grin, but has a "Glasgow Grin", which is the name of the specific type of scar that the Joker from "The Dark Knight" had.

I knew it but Veidt is actually scarier too me than Mr. J.
