Joker will premiere at the Venice Film Festival later this month, and thanks to USA Today, we have a brand new look at the DC Comics adaptation. According to director Todd Phillips, he's always been a fan of the villain's "predilection for mayhem" and sees the clown for hire's "descent into madness" as a way to make a 1970s-era character study.

"My goal wasn't to take Joaquin Phoenix and put him in the comic book universe," he explains. "My goal was to take comic books (universe) and put it in the Joaquin Phoenix universe." He adds that there’s "a darkness that (previous) actors probably had to live in" to play the villain and "Joaquin was aware of that. I would say he's unusually comfortable in that space."

It's going to be very interesting seeing how Joker is received, especially when all the signs are pointing to the movie taking some huge liberties with the source material.

Throw in the fact that an apparent leaked script has been met with a very mixed response, and there's a very good chance thatr critics and fans will be divided with this one. For now, let us know your thoughts on this new look at the movie in the comments section below.

Found some translated quotes from that Italian magazine cover story:

You lost a lot of weight for this role. Why?

“I had already lost a lot of weight to play Jesus in Mary Magdalene (opposite fiancée Rooney Mara) and to be honest I had promised myself to never do that again. This time I suggested to Todd an overweight Joker, but most people with the same issues of abuse as Arthur Fleck tend to eat poorly, take drugs (medicine), and so lose weight. So I didn't have a choice. And I went on a diet.”

How long did it take?

“A little more than 3 months, but it was so intense I had to forget my social and private life. I couldn't go out, I didn't see anyone in order to avoid temptations. My only relationship during the period before shooting began was with Todd: I called him everyday to talk about Joker. But in spite of the big sacrifice, this is one of my favorite roles ever.”

Dude definitely seems committed to the part.

@Doomsday8888 - I'd be surprised if it's better than his turn in The Master. That's one of the best performances of the decade

Precisely!
I mean, he's such a great actor with so many great roles and...i dunno, this could be just a way to promote the movie, but if he's being sincere, then wow...

And tbh, i believe him, he seems like a very straightforward person.

@tmp3 - I have no idea why he lost so much weight for Jesus, the dude pretty much wore a huge potato sack for every scene except the 15 seconds showing him stuck to the cross. Judas was the best part of that movie.

3 months in isolation? That's bit too extreme.

Huge liberties arent the problem Josh.

Taking a character who ABSOLUTELY NOT NEEDS an origin story and give him one is the problem.

Some villains need origin stories or to show the audience where they are coming from. Tw-Face, Dr Doom, Loki, Magneto.

Joker doesn't need a light shined on him. He reprsents the absolutelt bottom of human nature, Batman's greatest fear. That if anyone can turn intot he Joker then the battle for Gotham can be lost. If his worst enemy is not a suprnatural threat or a deity but a deranged lunatic then the human nature is the darkest pit there is.

We don't need to know why Joker became the Joker. The mystique is an essential part of the character.

@Jeight8 - I think that's why it's a good thing this film isn't connected to any main continuity like the DCEU and is merely using the Batman lore as window dressing, because that means it isn't serving as an origin story for the Joker, but just for a version of him.

@DnA - Thing is i dont believe ANY version of the Joker works with an origin story.

This film will be good no doubt but I hate that they are basically just using the name to sell this. They are outright rejecting everything about the comic so why associate Joker with it? Just use a different name, make it really original.

@Typhoon20 - Short answer Cash money. A period film about a mentally ill guy that snaps and kills people as a statement on society might win awards and get people clapping at the festivals; but a film about the Joker? Well that brings in that sweet, sweet comic book cash.

Regardless of comicbook accuracy, if the film is enjoyable to most it will be a success. If it is not, it will be a failure.

Just make good movies and people will deal with changes or different interpretations.

Many of the most popular comicbook superhero movies have significant deviations from canon. But they get a pass because the film was enjoyable.

Enjoyability>Adherence to canon

If it bangs, it bangs. I like movies that are good, if they make a few vague allusions to batman mythos, it will be a ok with me
