THE BATMAN: Matt Reeves Praises The Film's Cast And Crew; Weighs In On Why A Billionaire Superhero Still Works

The Batman director Matt Reeves has praised the movie's cast and crew while also addressing why a billionaire superhero can still be seen relevant, and how his reboot is made in "the context of today."

All the Batman movies have brought something different to the table, but what makes Matt Reeves' The Batman different? Well, The Daily Beast pretty much asked the writer and director exactly that during a recent interview to promote Amazon series Tales from the Loop

"The short answer is that it’s been going great," the filmmaker said regarding progress on the film before it was shut down as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We have an incredible cast and crew that I love working with. I’m working with the director of photography who I shot Let Me In with [Greig Fraser], who I just think is immensely talented."

"Bringing that partnership back to life has been incredibly exciting for me, and a lot of people whom I’ve worked with on other movies are back too. We’re all like a family making this movie, and it was going great. We shot about a quarter of the movie so far; we have three quarters to go. And when the time is right and it’s safe to do so, we’ll return to it."

"Robert is a fantastic actor, and we have so many great actors in it! It’s been really, really exciting to go on this journey with them, and to feel like we are trying to do something different."

Reeves was then asked about how Christopher Nolan's movies were rooted in sociopolitical concerns, and whether it's difficult to still make a billionaire superhero work in today's climate.

"To me, that’s the joy of working with it," he responded. "You use those surface elements of it, and you explore them in a way that, I feel, they haven’t been explored yet. Nolan had a brilliant take on them, and so did Burton. Everybody has a particular take. I wanted to do a Batman film where I was allowed to explore the things that matter to me."

"All those aspects you’re talking about, they all fit within a context," Reeves continued. "The movie that we’re making, which is now on pause, is absolutely made in the context of today. It doesn’t ignore any of that." That promises to be very interesting, and it's going to be very interesting seeing how the filmmaker goes about making his Batman stand out from the rest.

Are you guys excited for his take on the Dark Knight?

I can’t imagine Matt reeves doing anything but a stellar job with this but I saw a quote by him that said something along the lines of “I’m interested in seeing a batman who is not yet fully developed” and it’s just a bit like, still?? Lol

@manofillintent1 - Origin or semi-origin tale is the least interesting aspect of this film, but I still have my hopes up.

I get the issue. I kinda just want Batman to be Batman lol.

@manofillintent1 - I like the idea of a Batman still coming into his own, making a few mistakes here and there to up the drama. From what Reeves has described by the end of the movie we will know why he is the world’s greatest detective.

Also, certain origin moments haven’t been explored yet. Imagine if we get the Alfred saying “oh my god” moment after seeing Bruce in costume for the first time like as he did in Mask of the Phantasm. How cool would that be?

@Necropolitan - I'm actually quite the opposite, his origin or semi origin like you said is the most interesting to me. Especially under Matt Reeves direction.

Are there people out there who are saying movies about Billionaire heroes DON'T work? It's news to me. Seems like Batman has always been popular and Green Arrow's popularity has skyrocketed in recent years

@Nightwing1015 - I’ve never heard this at all. I doubt it’s a real concern. I don't think people care. They care more about the punching lol.

The fact these heroes are billionaires is the least interesting aspect about them.

@BlackBeltJones - No it's not.😂 Their unlimited fortune allows them to identify with real life celebrities. Most notable comic book characters are idolized & judged just like real life entertainers. So there's a parralel there, especially with Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark. Plus you gotta explain how they get all their tech.😂

Was this an actual concern? Look at how popular Tony Stark has been the last decade. No one “really” cares about the fact that Batman is a billionaire, Stark etc. The charm and intrigue of these guys override their financial standing. Folks are more concerned with the actual hero aspect anyway.

But, I’m sure in real life people would have issues with it though, no doubt. There’s a dangerous subtext about a guy that wealthy running around beating the crap out of people, with nigh unlimited resources.

@BlackBeltJones - Finn Jones once implied it was a problem. But he was kinda talking out of his ass a little bit.

@Necropolitan - that he was.

But if you wanna be real, a wealthy white guy imposing his will be personal sense of justice on criminals from a lower socioeconomic bracket would raise eyebrows. Just the idea of a rich guy being able to do something like this would be scary. There’s a lot of wealthy assholes now who do shit that’s scary and it doesn’t involve jumping off rooftops and mourning machine guns on suped up muscle cars lol

Sometimes people turn to crime purely out of circumstance and little to no other choice; sometimes that gets lost. I’ve been reading the recent Daredevil run and it does a great job of making Matt realize you’ve got to go after the people at the top of the chain who manipulate the system. I’m on a rant now lol

If you look at many polls about what the average person would do if they were a billionaire/rich, many of the top answers are selfless endeavors...helping others, helping environment, helping society. Helping.

Billionaires like Queen and Bruce and Stark work because they represent the best version of what we would all hope people with means would be like if having the opportunity.

GhostDog - 4/19/2020, 7:08 AM
@IronGenesis - I hope they show Bruce attempting to funnel some of his money into the city too. Going about saving Gotham in more than one way. I think that can easily get lost.

Yes, we know Batman represents the aspect of saving Gotham that money simply cant help, but donation has its place in the crusade too.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 4/19/2020, 10:38 AM
@CaptainJCipher - Nolan did but I would love it to be more of a central point than it was in his movies.

Actively seeing Bruce understand and push the idea that both BRUCE WAYNE and BATMAN have to save Gotham, just on different playing fields. Map it out, really make a plan out of it.

@IronGenesis - FWIW, none of the surviving members of Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon) is a billionaire.

I agree Mr. Reeves, you've assembled quite the cast. Pattinson alone is such an incredibly interesting actor, can't think of any other actor in that age range better suited for this role

And Paul Dano as Riddler is just god-tier casting, man

Colin Farrell as the Penguin is super [frick]ing cool too. The whole cast just feels like A24's Batman, haha.

Definitely can wait to see Reeve's take on Batman. He's clearly a longtime super-fan of the character, so he knows his shxt, and he's already proven himself quite able to make quality blockbuster films with ROTPOFTA and WFTPOTA. I love the fact that he's going to bring the world's greatest detective aspect of Batman to the forefront, he's hired a stellar cast of characters, and the apparent Long Halloween Influence on the plot definitely appeals to me as well, hopefully this will be the most comic accurate take on Batman we've seen yet. I just hope we still get some good fight scenes, because Riddler, Penguin, and Falcone certainly aren't physical threats, and while he might tussle with Catwoman, I don't see them getting into a fallout violent slugfest.
