THE BATMAN Trailer May Tease The Court Of Owls; Makeup Designer Confirms That IS Colin Farrell

An Easter Egg spotted by fans in The Batman trailer seemingly points to The Court of Owls being part of this world, while the movie's makeup designer confirms that is indeed Colin Farrell in the teaser.

The first trailer for The Batman put the spotlight on a sinister new version of The Riddler, but will he be the movie's only villain? We know that Catwoman and The Penguin will show up, of course, but what if there's an even bigger threat in the DC Universe Matt Reeves is creating with this franchise?

A closer look at the card The Riddler sends to the Dark Knight reveals that there's an owl with golden eyes on the front asking, "Who?" While that could be coincidence, many fans are convinced this is a reference to the Court of Owls, a villainous faction first introduced by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. An Illuminerdi-style cult made up of Gotham City's elite, Batman had to root them out in order to save his home from their corrupt influence.

Reeves has said The Batman will focus on corruption in Gotham City, so it would make sense for the Court of Owls to be involved in some way moving forward.

Talking of villains, The Batman's makeup designer has taken to Instagram to confirm that, yes, that is Colin Farrell as "Oz" in the trailer. While a set photo appeared to confirm that we'll see an "Emperor Penguin" version of the classic villain in the movie, it seems Reeves is sticking to the comic books, covering Farrell in prosthetics and makeup to achieve an unrecognizable appearance.

That makeup is truly amazing. Hopefully, it doesn't restrict his performance though.

@SnideCut - and im glad they didnt try to cgi it. Thats an easy way to make it look like he was never there.

@Origame - I actually think a mix of prosthetics and CG is the likely scenario and the best way to execute this.

@SnideCut - i mean, im sure they did use cgi to cover up the imperfections going on here. Im not saying that cgi shouldnt be a thing here. But look at the iron man suit in the original iron man vs civil war. Because the first movie used a real suit for the torso and arms, it made you believe hes really wearing it. And what cgi was used could better blend in with what was used. But then we have civil war, which yes still gave rdj the upper body part of the suit, that was only there so the cgi artists could use it for reference for lighting and just covered the whole thing. This made it look like his head doesnt belong in the same reality as the rest of him.

That prosthetic work is incredible, he looks like a completely different human being. Won't be surprised if this takes home the makeup Oscar.

@tmp3 - That's wildly jumping the gun, isn't it?

@MosquitoFarmer - well considering its so good no one was able to tell that was supposed to be the big named actor colin ferrell. Thats what effects are supposed to do, help create the illusion that its really there. When you make a monster, its not just making it look good, but making you believe its real. So yes, this is a pretty safe bet for a makeup oscar. Or at least a heavy contender.

@MosquitoFarmer - It's Matt Reeves and he's done great work in his previous movies either with CGI or practical make up like this, so no, it's not jumpinig the gun.

@MosquitoFarmer - If Suicide Squad can win, so can The Batman

@NewAtrocitus3 - The movie is only 30% filmed and we saw 3 quick and dark shots. I consider that hasty to place as an Oscar contender in a category that has only 3 nominees and considers 12-months worth of movies that we haven't seen yet.

Did they give Penguin a cleft lip. (hopefully Wendy Williams doesn't see this)

Yeah Zack, this is what a movie for adults looks like, hell it looks like it might be exclusively for adults, which is what Snyder implies by using its for adults as an excuse.

Yeah Zack, adult and mature are two different thing

The Batman seems like a mature adult movies, but you know whats also technically "adult"

You know whats technically for kids

A lot more mature and adult than the pointless slug fest that was BVS

@MalesMarcel - truly The Lord Of The Rings of animation.

@dracula - I mean, this movie is still a PG-13 so “exclusively for adults” might be pushing it

@tmp3 - Has the rating been confirmed, heard that Pattinson has teased it could be R. Not saying it being R is a sure thing, but it for sure looks like it could be an R, depending how far they will go

Adam Driver for Mad Hatter?

@manofillintent1 - Adam Driver in these movies would make me nut so hard. Amazing actor

@GothamSon - a short little dude like Dominic Monaghan could fit the bill for me.

I may be crazy but why not simply cast a guy that looks closer to the look they tried to achieve? Why go into all this extra effort and money? Brendan Gleeson is one i can think of.

@Nemesis17then - Kind of old, if they want to use him as the main villain of a sequel, makes sense to cast someone younger and fit to handle the action
Spawnnn

@Nemesis17then - Probably because he delivered the best performance at his audition?
GothamSon
GothamSon - 8/25/2020, 2:57 AM
@Spawnnn - Yeah I'd pay good money to see Farrell's audition tape for this
Nemesis17then
Nemesis17then - 8/25/2020, 3:05 AM
@Spawnnn - So he delivered the best performance and then they decided to cover him in makeup. Makes total sense. Also usually they give a description of the characteristics they want for the role so that not every actor goes to the audition. To me it looks a little bit like oscar bait like look what an amazing make-up team we have. I am all for Farrell as a villain and i like him as an actor and i am glad they made him look like that because otherwise he wouldn't resemble penguin from the comics but this is a weird choice.
Nemesis17then
Nemesis17then - 8/25/2020, 3:09 AM
@AzulaCipher - I said it is oscar bait because of the good make-up job not because of the casting

@Nemesis17then - According to your logic, we should [frick] the performance and simply focus on what actor looks like the version of the source material just to save some effort and money? Please never go into film-making.

If we were to follow that logic then many fantastic films would have lost phenomenal performances!

@Nemesis17then - You have to not neglect that movies are business and businesses they need sound marketing strategy. Colin Farrell is a big name and people are going to be intrigued and curious to see his performance moreso than they would and actor that is not so big but just looked the part.
