THE BATMAN's Robert Pattinson On Sequel Delay: "Matt Is A Very Careful Writer... But I Know What It's About"

Late last year, we got the disappointing news that Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel won't be arriving in theaters until October 1, 2027.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn took to social media shortly after the announcement to state that the almost year-long delay was simply down to the fact that the script hasn't been finished. This led to speculation that Reeves may not have settled on which direction to take the sequel, but it sounds like the filmmaker has now, at the very least, cracked the overall story.

Following recent comments from Alfred Pennyworth actor Andy Serkis, star Robert Pattinson has revealed that he also knows what the sequel - which is no longer officially titled The Batman - Part II - will be about, while also addressing the news that the movie has been pushed into 2027.

“Matt is a very careful writer [laughs]... but I finally now know what it's about. It's very cool and I'm very excited.”

A lot of fans and industry insiders remain convinced that Pattinson will ultimately stay on as the DCU's Dark Knight for the planned The Brave and the Bold movie. Folding the Batverse into the DCU might make the most sense, if for no other reason than to avoid having two separate Batman franchises running alongside each other. By the time The Batman sequel actually hits theaters in 2027, there's sure to have been at least some progress on The Brave and The Bold, although director Andy Muschietti did reveal that the project has been "postponed a little bit" late last year (FWIW, Gunn refuted this).

There have been rumors that Reeves might be dealing with some personal issues which prevented him from working on the script for a period of time. The filmmaker did mention that he had "a lot of stuff going on in my life" during January's Golden Globes, while also confirming that The Batman sequel is scheduled to begin filming this year.

"I can tell you that we're going to be shooting this year and that we're excited about it. I can't really tell you anything about it except that we're really excited. We're continuing the story. I'm really excited to be making it, to get our cast back together, to get new people involved, and we're really excited about it."

"What I'm excited about is I feel like we're doing something that absolutely continues where the story came from but is something that I hope people are going to be really surprised by," he added.

Plot rumors continue to swirl, and we have heard that Hush and/or Mr. Freeze could end up being the villains. There doesn't seem to be much to these reports, but there is a good chance that the movie will have a winter setting.

@BlackStar25 - Can you tell me how to post a gif on Android?

@da2213viking — It should be the same process. Go to a website like Tenor, hold the GIF, and click "Open in new tab," copy that link, and paste it here, removing the "s" in "https."

I don't think he'll be the DCU's Batman, nor do I think he should be, but that's just me. Some directors and movies don't need to be beholden to a shared universe structure.
ObserverIO

@MyCoolYoung - Since The Batman and The Penguin are already out, wouldn't it be the rest of the DCU that's beholden, not Matt Reeves?
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 2/17/2025, 3:07 PM
@ObserverIO - yes, you are correct. Whatever the case, personally, I don’t see the more grounded Batman aspects translating into the more fantastical DCU. I could be wrong of course
RolandD

@MyCoolYoung - I agree and I think the general audience is intelligent enough to realize that they’re two different versions.

@RolandD - 100% are and I don’t know why anyone thinks any differently
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/18/2025, 5:12 AM
@RolandD - It's not really about whether they are intelligent enough, it's whether they care enough. It's hard enough to get general audiences invested in one version of events. If there are multiple versions at the same time they won't care about either of them.
RolandD
RolandD - 2/18/2025, 2:22 PM
@ObserverIO - That’s a valid point but users here often argue the one I mentioned as well.

I'd take a delayed movie that's good over a rushed one that's bad. People should be happy WB and Reeves are taking their time to get this right, especially after all the mediocre projects we've gotten this past half decade.

I really liked the first one. It had its issues but mostly thought it was a solid 7/10. Its sucks its gonna be almost 6 years between movies. I live Matt Reeves but he is taking so long that interest in this movie may be lost on the audience.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 2/17/2025, 1:51 PM
@da2213viking - Any lost interest will be restored with a good first trailer. Personally I think the movie will be moved up to summer 2027 instead, but I guess it depends on when filming starts.
da2213viking
da2213viking - 2/17/2025, 1:55 PM
@TheJok3r - I agree. Marketing for this will be key and establishing its in Matt Reeves universe during that trailer. I honestly wouldnt hate, for the audiences sake, if the first 5 mins of this new film was almost like a recap of the first movie and The Penguin.

Matt Reeves should be an even more careful writer.

The Batman kind of sucks.

People will lose interest if it is too much longer. This is a better Comic Book Movie universe than what they are threatening to do with the upcoming Superman.
da2213viking
da2213viking - 2/17/2025, 1:52 PM
@Forthas - While i do like Matt Reeves take on Batman I also think what James Gunn is doing with the DCU has potential. James Gunn for all his flaws from a humor standpoint(I hate his humor) is a very good writer and very much understands structure and arcs in movies.
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 2/17/2025, 1:53 PM
@Forthas - We did just get Penguin, so it's not like this universe has been absent since early 2022. There's also rumors of another show being released by next year. Considering how disappointing a good number of comic book projects have been, I think interest will actually go up for this movie as a result of that.
Forthas
Forthas - 2/17/2025, 2:15 PM
@da2213viking - I am not sold on James Gunn's writing. The movies that I enjoyed of his are largely the Guardians of the Galaxy films and 1) I thought they were good to OK with none of them being great and 2) he was part of the Marvel machine at its peak. When you strip away the Marvel films his resume is no better than Zack Snyder. You see this same trend with the Russo Brothers who make bad films without Marvel. There is no Marvel to save him and his tyrannical approach so far (casting his friends and family, greenlighting his own projects, favoring obscure characters over DC foundational ones and other things) has already turned me off to the DCU.
da2213viking
da2213viking - 2/17/2025, 2:31 PM
@Forthas - Yeah thats a lot to go through. I will say I love Slither and Super. I think outside of the awkward sex scene in Super its good at least. Also like his Suicide squad. Liked GotG 1 and 3. 2 I did not like much.

I would say his resume is far and away better than Snyders. Visually i would take snyder all day. Story structure. No way. Its funny also because James Gunn wrote probably Snyders best movie he has ever directed.

I dont mind if directors use people they are comfortable with. Most directors do this. Taratino, Scorsese, Wes Anderson Etc. People tend to use who they are comfortable with. I dont see this as a problem. Theres a ton of DC characters and Gunn only has so many main stay actors to fill certain roles. For the most part his familar cast members are in small roles already.

I also am okay with less popular DC characters getting a chance to be on the small or big screen. As long as the most popular ones are treated well and shine as they should.
Forthas
Forthas - 2/17/2025, 5:12 PM
@TheJok3r - That is an excellent point but I would provide one caveat, that the Penguin was seen by only Max subscribers. Therefore I am uncertain that most of the people that saw The Batman would have that to fill in the time in between. But I don't know how much Max subscribers overlap with people who saw The Batman. Tough call!
