THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Reveals How Close To The Comic Books This Take On The Penguin Actually Is

The Batman star Colin Farrell has revealed exactly how many aspects of Oswald Cobblepot's comic book persona will be in the movie, explaining that "Oz" isn't quite The Penguin during this era in Gotham...

When The Batman was still shooting, Colin Farrell was seemingly spotted on the movie's set looking very much like the "Emperor Penguin" character from the comic books. We'd later learn that was a case of mistaken identity, with the Irish actor instead donning prosthetics and a fat suit to portray a (mostly) accurate version of Oswald Cobblepot in Matt Reeves' "Year Two" story.

We say "mostly" because there are some key elements from the source material missing, but this is a Penguin at a relatively early stage in his career as one of Gotham City's greatest crooks.

This was emphasised by Farrell during an interview with Empire (via CBR). "There's no top hat [in The Batman]," he confirmed. "There is one scene where I have an umbrella in my hand, but it doesn't have a trigger on the handle. He does have a limping gait, so there is somewhat of a waddle."

"Oz is not yet fully inhabiting the mythology of the Penguin and doesn't take too kindly to the monicker," Farrell adds, teasing the transformation this character will go through. Previously, he's said that the villain is "only in [The Batman] for five or six scenes," but we do know a HBO Max series is in the works that could explore how he goes from Oz to The Penguin (which sounds a lot like Gotham).

Following the villain's journey in this corner of the DC Multiverse has potential, and we're fully expecting Oz to be a big part of whatever Reeves has planned for this new trilogy of movies. We'll see if that ultimately involves taking centre stage as a lead bad guy similar to Danny DeVito in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, but there are plenty of other rogues the director could choose to focus on.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

@WakandanQueen - my Queen…
UXASIS - 1/2/2022, 4:09 PM
@WakandanQueen - You make me even more hyped with these beautiful HQ gifs.

How fun would it be if Riddler went after Penguin, for being the main source of corruption?
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/1/2022, 9:04 AM
This movie will mark the redemption for both the Riddler and the Pinguin in live action movies (sorry, I know it was your childhood, but Danny DeVito's Penguin was laughable bad).
LucasTurkeyNeck - 1/1/2022, 9:21 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - as much as it was apart of my childhood and I do enjoy it I can admit that that portrayal was not at all accurate. I’m looking forward to this iteration of penguin
Itwasme - 1/1/2022, 12:00 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - sounds like he's a side villain, maybe the one Batman stops as an introduction. I doubt he'll even be referred to as the Penguin.
RegularPoochie - 1/1/2022, 12:04 PM
@Itwasme - no shit?
Itwasme - 1/1/2022, 12:12 PM
@RegularPoochie - its just my take from how he's talked about and even him being in the trailers as much. Farrel consistently says he's not in the film that much and trailers often emphasize the beginning of films.

I think he's going to be there as the foil to establish this Batman, the Batmobile, and the overall tone, then be done.

I'm not so sure there's any sort of time for reception for the character.
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/1/2022, 6:10 PM
@Itwasme - I doubt he is.
The main villain is the Riddler, it seems they are just introducing the Penguin in this movie to explore him in the HBO Max series, and posibly in sequels...I just hope they wait some damn time before using the Joker.
regularmovieguy - 1/2/2022, 10:15 AM
@Itwasme @TheHumanSpider2

Penguin’s going to take over the Falcone mob, imo. Think there’s going to be a power struggle between the two.

Reeves said Cobblepot’s waiting to make his move, he’s going to go from disrespected enforcer to Gotham crime boss in this flick.
KWilly - 1/1/2022, 9:29 AM
If he doesn't have that "Waawaawaa" laugh, I'll be distraught
GhostDog - 1/1/2022, 9:29 AM
Why is he Italian?
cyclopsprime - 1/1/2022, 11:25 AM
@BlackBeltJones - he's basically American in most media while he has a cockney accent in the arkham series
Itwasme - 1/1/2022, 12:02 PM
@BlackBeltJones - his name in the film is Oswaldo Cobblepotio.
HulkisHoly - 1/1/2022, 1:32 PM
@cyclopsprime -

He’s straight up Jewish in the Harley show.
Repian - 1/1/2022, 9:49 AM
The Penguin should hide a sharp blade in the umbrella. Perhaps an unscrewed umbrella handle similar to the curved handle of a knife.

UXASIS - 1/1/2022, 11:27 AM
Well even judging just from the few shots in the trailer, he's a lot more true to the comics than Danny Devito's ''tragic monster freak.''

After seeing Farrell in The North Water (tv show), I'm kinda curious how they make the tv show. I just hope it will be a bit different than in Gotham (which was pretty well done).

McMurdo - 1/2/2022, 8:53 AM
@UXASIS - that North Water show was next [frick]ing level amazing man
UXASIS - 1/2/2022, 11:25 AM
@McMurdo - The savagery of Colin Farrel, was really well done and great acting.

Have you seen the tv show - the Underground Railroad? That shocked me even more. I don't want to spoil it, but it is about the slavers of southern United States in the 19. century.

Joel Edgerton is playing the main bad guy, and the miniseries is really brutal with emotions.
McMurdo - 1/2/2022, 12:00 PM
@UXASIS - big fan of Edgerton I have a very vague memory of seeing a trailer for that show but can’t fully recall. Good looking out man I got COVID so need shit to watch. I’ll look into this asap. Jack O’Connell was [frick]ing incredible in North Water too. He’s gonna be gigantic sooner than later with all the bangers he’s been doing in the Indy circuit
ProudPatriot76 - 1/1/2022, 12:12 PM
I saw it posted somewhere, either Instagram or Facebook, but it was a comic panel of Oswald from Alex Ross. Alex Ross’ Penguin and Colin Farrel’s Penguin look strikingly similar. I’m down for it!
THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - 1/1/2022, 12:14 PM
I applaud the makeup department. It's mind-blowingly good. But I'm not big on the voice/personality and the lack of Penguin trademarks. Similar feelings towards Gimp Riddler.
valmic - 1/1/2022, 12:34 PM
Sounds so much like the GOTHAM version of penguin. They should have given him the cockney accent like they did in the game, makes sense especially for some named Oswald Cobblepot
4thMaster - 1/1/2022, 2:03 PM
@micvalpro - I think using Farrell's natural Irish accent would have been the better route here.
valmic - 1/1/2022, 2:13 PM
@4thMaster - That too. I really like what he's doing with his voice now, the "I go you!" in the trailer is just so good, but he doesn't feel like the penguin.
LonelyRanger - 1/2/2022, 2:03 PM
@4thMaster - I was hoping that this was going to be the case...!
