BLACK PANTHER Director Ryan Coogler & Star Michael B. Jordan Re-Team For Mysterious Vampire(?) Movie

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are joining forces yet again for a mysterious "genre" movie which might just involve some undead creatures of the night...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler has set his first project under his new Proximity Media production company banner, and he'll be re-teaming with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan, who worked with him on both Black Panther movies, as well as Creed and Fruitvale Station.

Per THR (via FearHQ.com), the movie is said to be so top secret that "executives and buyers were forced to make the pilgrimage to the Beverly Hills offices of WME, the agency that represents Coogler and Jordan, in order to take a gander at the script and get details."

The film is being described as a "genre feature," with a "period element to the story." This doesn't really narrow things down very much, but thanks to Jeff Sneider in the latest edition of his newsletter, we may have a little more to go on.

Sneider doesn't provide many new details, but he has heard that the movie will feature a vampire or vampires in some capacity.

A period vampire tale directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan is certainly an intriguing prospect. Let's hope some more details come to light soon.

Coogler will also write the script and is on board as lead producer along with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

Coogler's last feature was Marvel Studios Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which saw Jordan reprise his role as Erik Killmonger for an afterlife cameo. Last we heard, the filmmaker was working on a third Black Panther instalment, but there's been no official word on his progress. Coogler is also said to be involved in at least one planned small-screen BP spin-off, and was recently rumored as a possible contender to helm Avengers: Secret Wars.

We wouldn't put too much stock in that one at the moment, especially since Coogler is also taking charge of an X-Files reboot for the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.

What do you make of his news? Care to make any guesses about this mysterious vampire movie? Be sure to drop us a comment down below, and check out Jordan's return as Killmonger in Wakanda Forever.

In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, and Alex Livanalli.

So basically a vampire movie where race is emphasized.

Meh. Ok. Michael B. Jordan is pretty talented.

@DarthAlgar - there was no mention of race til you brought up race just now. Was Creed about race?
Origame
Origame - 1/19/2024, 11:51 AM
@DarthAlgar - honestly I have faith Michael b Jordan will keep it on track.

He prevented creed from being a race relations analogy it very easily could've been, the first black panther actually went against the idea of race as being important, and he specifically turned down the coates black superman movie when he learned it would be Clark Kent instead of Val zod or Calvin Ellis.

DarthAlgar - 1/19/2024, 11:52 AM
@eddyxx - You're naive if you think that won't be a primary focus on the film.

Creed is a poor example. Those are just spinoffs to an already established franchise.

Sorry if my comment offends, but given recent history of Hollywood and pop culture in it's almost guaranteed.

@Origame - That's fine. Just give me a good movie with a talented black lead actor and make it about vampires. It doesn't need to be political.

Nobody wants politics in their vampires movies except for Josh Wilding.

FinnishDude

@eddyxx - Not directly. You could take the basic premise of a kid trying to prove his worth by living up to the legacy of his famous father he never knew and have the main character be white, without ending up with significantly different movie, but there's probably some subtext to be read from it being a black street-kid.

(Although, as a white guy living in Finland, I'm not going to act like I'm the right person to read into it).

FinnishDude

@DarthAlgar - All art is political, but horror especially, since it always reflects on things the audience of its day felt anxious. Like, if we want an example from vampire fiction specifically, the original Dracula novel by Bram Stroker was very much about scary foreigners bringing death, diseases and corruption of the innocent with them.

@DarthAlgar - .By that logic ever movie with "white" from white directors with white actors had a particular racial point of view...many times over. This seems more like a guy and director with a past history making a film...and from a racial point of view one can't help but assume race would factor as the character will be in a period where that was a thing.

I always wonder about some of the comments on here and what the point actually is tbh...

@DarthAlgar - majority of movies, throughout history have been political in some way or another. The only difference these days is idiots like you cry about it and act like it's not the norm

@DarthAlgar - All the white plantation owners are vampires who have their black slaves, until one day a slave who was meant to be used and discarded as food, survives and becomes a vampire(idk just go with it?). Then he embarks on a mission to kill the plantation owner vampire, vampire family, and vamp employees. Sequel is he frees slaves across the country by killing the plantation owners/vampires, culminating in killing the Vampire President. Threequel is he travels overseas to kill the original....Dracula....and release all slaves worldwide. I'll take 5 million Mr. Coogler if you'd like to use my idea.

I wouldn’t mind a fresh take on Van Helsing.

I actually read a few years ago an idea for an African American Van Helsing, Django Unchained style. Was sick but could land controversial.

Vampires infiltrated America’s elite during the 17th Century. They farmed slave cattle for food sources, doubling for the Slave Trade. A young boy on one of the ships gets rescued by a Dutch freedom fighter, who teaches him to read and write and speak English, as well as other languages. Eventually teaches him to hunt Vamps. Renames the boy Abraham Van Helsing.

The end even had him hunted by American officials, having him flee to Europe where his eventual meeting with Dracula would unfold in a sequel.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - yeah me too. With Blade being basically the answer to a traditionally white Van Helsing, I wonder if it would struggle in that aspect.

Plus it’s always tricky to pull off period pieces with sensitive subject areas like the Slave Trade.
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 1/19/2024, 1:34 PM
@Se4M4NSt4ine - Yeah the Blade comparsions are going to be hard to look past, maybe they could go in a similar route to the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie and have him hunt other monsters as well? (although maybe that's an idea better saved for a sequel tho tbf).

Yeah it would be tricky but feel like Coogler's a good enough filmaker to handle that topic with a level of grace and nuance imo (that being said the usual crowd are going to be pissed off either way lol).
