BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER - We'll Be Waiting Longer Than Expected For The Movie's Disney+ Debut

While a 45-day theatrical window has become the norm for Marvel Studios movies, it's now been confirmed that we'll be waiting longer than expected for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to hit Disney+...

While the pandemic didn't quite obliterate the theatrical window as many expected, it definitely shortened it. In the case of Disney-owned movies, such as those from Marvel Studios, we've grown accustomed to a mere 45-day wait for the latest MCU blockbusters to go from theaters to Disney+.

However, that looks set to change with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The movie, which has just passed $200 million at the domestic box office, will not hit the streaming service around the holidays as we initially expected. A 45-day window would have seen the Black Panther sequel hit Disney+ on December 26, but Deadline reports that there are currently no plans for it to premiere before the end of 2022.

"While exhibition has received word that Disney's animated Thanksgiving release Strange World will hit Disney+ in time for the year-end holidays," the trade explains, "there’s a robust theatrical window ahead for Wakanda Forever, definitely more than 45 days, I understand, with no plans for a holiday drop on the studio’s OTT service."

Even though it didn't open quite as strongly as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (there was only around $6 million in it), the expectation is that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will have considerably longer legs. As a result, it's eyeing an eventual domestic haul of around $500 million.

With that in mind, Marvel Studios will be looking to keep the movie in theaters for as long as possible, and this may well become the norm as theaters continue recovering from the pandemic.

It also doesn't make a lot of sense for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to hit Disney+ over the holidays when people are spending time with their families; while there will be those who would jump at the chance to watch it again, Disney would no doubt rather they head to theaters to watch Avatar: The Way of Water

Also, DIsney+ will benefit greatly from getting a movie like this at the start of the year, boosting subscribers in the process.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ranks among Marvel Studios' best movies, and is an emotional, uplifting, tour de force of a blockbuster," we said in our review of the movie. "Letitia Wright delivers a powerhouse performance, while Angela Bassett’s majestic work will leave you reeling."

How many times will you watch Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on the big screen?

@DrReedRichards - Yeah I think I read a news article recently that Disney is going to commit to the Theatrical model again and reduce spending on Disney+ content. Apparently they are losing money and are seeing little to no return on the big budget contents they produce.

@hazapez - According to the definition of recession that has existed up to this year, we have been in one since July.

@DrReedRichards - I'm assuming it'll land somewhere between Multiverse of Madness and The Batman.

@hazapez -

Mate, I've been among the few supprters of this movie who still think it's not gonna break a billie; with or without China. But as for Disney delaying its D+ upload, I can only imagine boosting their ticket sales as a reason to do so.

@Reeds2Much -

As I've already told our good old archivist BlueMorpho, my estimate is 875-925 mil with China, or 725-775 mil without them.

@mastakilla39 -

We can only hope. Lord knows I have my vendettas with anti-MCU contrarians, but one of their few (less than a handful) solid criticism is that pushing for D+ content has been hurtful to the franchise.

Less is more, please and thank you.

@mastakilla39 - Yep. Disney is losing tons of money on Disney+.

A big part of that is they were kind of throwing logic out the window and paying big money on shows, with the thought that they will exist on D+ forever and will eventually earn money back.

But the problem is there's no real way for streaming services to know for sure what people paying for. You can see amount of views, but what does that mean? For existing customers you already had their monthly payment. So you aren't making anything more from them. And for your new customers, the closest thing they can do is look to see what the first few shows are that the new customers watch after subscribing.

Otherwise, there's no real telling if your 100 million dollar budget tv show was really worth it, or how much you're earning because of it.

D+ has been said to be losing millions upon millions of dollars which is a part of all the layoffs we've been hearing about at Disney.

I've ever heard that if Black Panther 2 doesn't make a billion then it will be viewed as a failure by Disney.

@marvel72 - Yeah. I liked Loki and WandaVision. And Mandalorian.

Now that I think about it that's really all I've used it for. Although me and my daughter did have a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror marathon on Halloween.

No movies are gonna do that unless it’s avengers again tbh

Good idea honestly. Growing up back in the day I remember waiting a year or so before movies hot rental video stores. They should give a movie 90 days at least.

@Thing94 - It used to take soooooooo long for movies to go from theatres to VHS. At least it felt like it to me as a little kid.

It felt like forever for Batman '89 and TMNT to hit VHS.
JDL
JDL - 11/16/2022, 5:29 PM
@Thing94 - People simply won't wait 90 days anymore and to do so creates ill will towards the studio. Frankly after 60 days in 19 out 20 cases the paying audience has dried up and in normal times the screens are needed got new prodcut. That 1 time out of 20 is TG:M.

I enjoyed Wakanda Forever but I definitely miss Chadwick’s charm. He brought a lot to the role of T’Challa and while I like shuri and the supporting cast, idk they just didn’t do it for me. Except the queen, she killed it
