The last time Henry Cavill played Superman was in 2017's Justice League, and his Man of Steel has been sidelined ever since (aside from some faceless cameos in Shazam! and Peacemaker). Fans have made it clear they want The Witcher star back as the hero, though Warner Bros. has ignored those requests.
Rumour has it the studio originally planned to end The Flash by erasing Cavill's Superman from reality, retelling the events of Man of Steel and replacing him with Supergirl.
Plans have since changed, though, and thanks to Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson, the British actor looks set to return to the DCEU.
Talking during a recent interview for the movie, The Rock pointed to the change of leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery opening the door to Cavill's Superman comeback.
"This serves not only Black Adam, but it serves the larger DC Universe. But man, more importantly than that, it takes care of the fans, and that’s what you want your lead foot to be," the actor explains. "And yes, phone calls and meetings, but man, it was years...this was six years to get that done."
"I’m gonna say that again - six years, we first started talking about this, and they kept saying no. Now that leadership isn’t there anymore, because we usher in a new era in the DC Universe, and we usher out an old era."
What leadership is he referring to? Well, since 2018, Kevin Tsujihara, Ann Sarnoff, Michael De Luca, and Pamela Abdy have all taken a crack at running the studio, and we'd bet Tsujihara and Sarnoff (and potentially Walter Hamada) were to blame for sidelining Cavill. That's likely down to a desire to move on from that divisive "SnyderVerse" era.
Still, Cavill is back as Supes and we certainly can't complain about that. There are rumblings he appears in Black Adam, but we'll find out for sure when the movie is released next Friday.
