BLACK PANTHER Is Set To Become The First Film To Publicly Screen In Saudi Arabia In Over 35 Years

Not content with clawing its way through the box office, Marvel and Ryan Coogler's critically-acclaimed Black Panther is now set to become the first movie to screen in a Saudi Arabian cinema in 35 years...

Marvel's Black Panther is set to make history yet again.

The Ryan Coogler-helmed superhero flick will break Saudi Arabia’s 35-year cinema ban when it screens on April 18 in an AMC movie theatre in Riyadh with a gala premiere. This marks the first public screening in the kingdom since movie theaters where banned in the early '80s, after Saudi Arabia adopted ultraconservative religious standards in 1979.

The ban was lifted last December by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a bid to bring positive changes to Saudi society. This is only the beginning, too, as AMC Entertainment expects to have up to 40 cinemas up and running in Saudi Arabia within five years.

The fact that Black Panther was chosen for this honour is a testament to the true cultural phenomenon the film has become.

UPDATE: It's come to our attention that The Emoji Movie was actually the first feature to publicly screen in SA back in January - although it wasn't in a theater, since none were built at the time. Still, it does somewhat diminish that Wakandan thunder!

i didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as everyone else, but it’s really nice to see it make waves like this, especially because of my lifelong love of the character. this is nothing but good news for the saudi arabian people.

@Nerdman3000 - Wasn't aware of that, but on further inspection, it didn't actually screen in a movie theater. Still, it was public, so it's something Variety should have noted. I'll add this to the article.

@noahthegrand - the Black Panther movie has so many elements that pleased so many people in different ways....father and son conflict, becoming a new king, boy wants girl back, 007 mission, tradition, betrayal, loyalty, mystery, tribal insurrection, revenge, celebration, family tragedy, royalty, technical advancements, social injustice, and revolutionary issues!

To all the people above complaining about it being the first movie screened since the 80's, would you rather the Emoji movie was the first film?......because it actually was.

@MrDandy - no. black panther is much better.

I guess when you go decades without theaters you... kind of don’t know what you’re doing.

Next up? Tyler perry comedies! Want some romance?? We have these excellent new films from the American “hallmark” channel. Great stuff.

@BloodyBed - Your joke reminded me of this Family Guy scene. Mildly racist of me because the Family Guy joke is about Persians, but you get the point.

@ThePanther - i don’t even mean this in a condescending way... but why?

@TheRealTomServo - a lot of factors. But as a kid growing up, while I had friends like me that grew up reading comics and a lot of other stuff like video games, my dad realized that I had trouble connecting with them the same level as my peers. And my dad being the film professor and comic fan that he is, he introduced me to Black Panther comics as well as started to educate me about my family’s ancestry right around the same time. It was just something that clicked with Panther, though there were other black superheroes I loved growing up, something about him just clicked and I was hooked. And this wasn’t the only time my dad would sit down and educate me on one subject and introduce me to another source of fiction, and just that bonding we had over stories, fables and life lessons and especially as a black kid growing up with the feeling of not really belonging was really an important staple in my life.

I’m studying Theater Arts (to pursue my acting career) as well as Africana Studies due to my upbringing and interest in my culture. And when I tell you this movie is just jam packed with a combination of almost everything I love, it is not an exaggeration. I finally got that feeling of being a kid and seeing my imagination right in front of my face on the screen on an emotional level, and it wasn’t just a solid movie, it was GREAT. I’ve studied these actors man... I look up to them. And the acting, the visuals, the themes, the directing, it’s as if I actually felt that there was something made specifically for me. Not in the sense of representation (which does go hand in hand with this), but that level of an emotional attachment to things that I really love and cherish and to see it treated with care just made me veklempt.

It felt like my father was introducing me to Black Panther in a new way again... and that’s exactly what the opening scene was with N’Jobu telling his son about Wakanda, I felt that. I’ve been both Erik (a kid in California running around California believing in Fairy Tales) and T’Challa with the frustrations of dealing with responsibility, and feeling the weight of coping with the loss of a loved one while not being afraid to show some damn emotion. You just didn’t use to see that with black men in the films.

Is it a perfect movie? Well that’s a matter of preference but it just hit me to the point that this movie is too damn important cause I know that there are many others that share these same feelings towards it and how much it affected them.
