BLACK WIDOW Actor Olivier Richters Confirms That His Character Is Ursa Major - The MCU's First Mutant!?

Black Widow actor Olivier Richters has taken to Instagram to confirm that his character is indeed Ursa Major, the Winter Guard member who can transform into a bear. This makes him the MCU's first mutant!

When Nat (Scarlett Johansson) and Yelena (Florence Pugh) decide to break Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour) out of prison in Black Widow, we jump to a scene with The Red Guardian arm-wrestling some of his fellow inmates. Alexi refers to the huge man who winds up having is wrist snapped as Ursa, and actor Olivier Richters has now confirmed that his character is indeed Ursa Major.

"The Dutch Giant" shared an Instagram post making it very clear that he played the Winter Guard member, who has the mutant ability to transform into a huge bear in the comics. The movie never establishes this (obviously), but Richters believes this officially makes his character the first mutant to appear in the MCU.

"Marvel Black Widow is out," Richters captioned his post. "After two years I can finally tell who my character is: Ursa Major 🐻: the first mutant (X-Men) to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (SWIPE photos). Ursa is part of the Winter Guard, noted for being "Russia's answer to the Avengers". His power transforms him into an incredible bear, transcending The Hulk in size. Ursa appears many times in the comics fightning Wolverine and The Hulk."

"When production on set told me who I really was in Black Widow I let some tears in my hotel room, because my movie dream became true: being a official comic super Hero. I can only hope Marvel will bring back Ursa in full form."

Technically, he's right - but just because the comic book version of Major is a mutant, doesn't mean this big-screen take on the character is! Still, if Marvel Studios ever decides to do something with The Winter Guard, there's a good chance we will see Ursa again, so hopefully Richters gets his wish.

Black Widow is now playing in theaters and on Disney+ Premiere Access.

Does he need to become even bigger though? Think the Giant part in Dutch Giant is already indicative enough of his size

Yeah but nobody knew who he was when we seen him and he didn’t even have any lines so him being Ursa Major was pointless. He could’ve said he was Colossus and we wouldn’t have known who he was when they showed him.

@WruceBayne -

He did have lines. He questioned Red Guardian about the year he fought Captain America.

... and Red Guardian calls him Ursa.

@SKetCH - you’re absolutely right. I don’t remember the red guardian calling him Ursa though.

Huh, if they wanted a russian hero, surprised they didnt go with Colossus.

@dracula - Perhaps Colossus's father is similar to Jonathan Kent. He doesn't want the Russian mother to use Peter as a weapon. So he pressures his son to hide the powers.

Russia is also an extremely intolerant country. For example, there is no religious freedom and homosexuals are persecuted. So many mutants may feel oppressed.

If he doesn't transform into a bear on screen and no one addresses him as a mutant, he is still just a guy who got his wrist snapped by the Red Guardian, nothing more.

I would certainly like to see the scene paid off down the line, similar to past MCU references. Plus, there’s just something that feels more... natural, more inconspicuous, about doing it this way, as opposed to it being one of the more prominent mutants.

He isn't a "mutant" until Kevin says so. This would be a subject that Kevin would want to announce.

Also, Kevin has stated that many times they will borrow from the comics, including characters' "names", meaning "name only". And if he continues in the MCU, he might be something else, but not a "mutant".

Again, he isn't a "mutant" until Kevin says so.

There's no question he was Ursa Major, the movie basically makes that clear. However, he's no more a mutant than the Maximoffs were before their comic retcon. Because technically, and it's clear we're going by technicalities here, they were still mutants in the comics when they first appeared in Winter Soldier. It wasn't until a few months later in AXIS that they were revealed to have never been mutants in the first place.

Which means they were technically the first mutants to appear in the MCU.
