BLADE: Bassam Tariq Confirms He's Directing The Movie And Praises Marvel For "[Taking] Big Swings"

Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq has confirmed that he's taking the helm of Blade for Marvel Studios and explains how the ever-changing nature of the character has affected his approach to the project.

It was recently reported that Bassam Tariq will take the helm of Blade for Marvel Studios, and the filmmaker has now confirmed that he's the latest director to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The reboot will bring the Vampire Hunter into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali taking on the title role. As for what it's been like to make the leap into blockbuster territory, Tariq admits to being surprised that a project like this one actually ended up heading his way.

"I didn’t think [‘Blade’] was going to happen, just to be very honest," he tells The Playlist. "I’m honored and it’s a privilege, but I’m here in service of Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who is the incredible writer that is writing the film. She’s just a phenomenal presence and a juggernaut in her own right. And for Mahershala [Ali]. For me, it’s really just working in their service."

"[Marvel] takes big swings, you know?" Tariq added. "I can’t say anything about it, but I’m just so excited for what we’re doing."

Needless to say, he was giving nothing away when it comes to what fans can expect, but it sounds like Blade's lack of history in the comic books has opened the door to the character being taken to some unexpected places. There are a lot of stories featuring Blade, of course, but he's gone from being the focus of more horror-focused comics  to joining The Avengers over the past few years!

"Character is very important for me. I don’t think of genre, I think of character," Tariq teases. "It’s not so boxed in as people imagine it to be [working with Marvel Studios]. It’s quite exciting. And I think the reality is there is no ‘Blade’ canon, you know? If you ever read the comics, they’re always changing…Unfortunately, the [comic book series] never lasted that long."

Blade still doesn't have a release date, though we are anticipating it either being at the end of Phase 4 or sometime in Phase 5. It's possible Ali will appear as the character before this solo outing, of course, but bringing vampires into the MCU is bound to have major consequences for this shared world.

Wow, that is a surprising choice, Marvel always seem to find Interesting Directors.
Seems to have done some interesting sounding Documentaries along with his Movie.

Really hope he gives Blade a distinctive visual look to separate him from the Snipes Version.

Good luck to Bassam

On the topic of another Vampire Slayer

Looks like Disney is going to be producing Buffy content
https://www.polygon.com/22600437/buffy-the-vampire-slayer-ya-book-release-in-every-generation-cover-reveal

Wonder if that sequel/reboot with a black slayer is still in development

Currently rewatching Buffy, on season 5

@dracula - They probably want to clean their hands of anything Whedon touched (although, in that regard, any future Buffy content will be controversial no matter what), but I would prefer soft-reboot sequel to the series, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising the character for the first episode of the show/act of the movie to pass the torch to the new face of the franchise.

@FinnishDude - Well they are still producing comics with Boom and obviously these books, so doesn't seem like they care that much. Personally don't care, good product is a good product, a guy being an asshole doesn't change that.

Hopefully the soft reboot series happens, even if its minor, would be great to see SMG and Anthony Head again passing the torch to a new lead. If it happens, hopefully the new head of the series can maintain the quality of the original and the other whedon shows (Guy was an asshole but a talented asshole)

@dracula - It's a legacy thing. I like it. Willow's daughter.

As far as a new show or reboot going ahead without Whedon's blessing or involvement? Now would be the best time to do it since Whedon has been vaguely cancelled. But they better act fast. He didn't do anything bad enough to be cancelled permanently, so if they wait too long I think there will be a tremendous outcry from the fans.

My only concern with this movie is that it's going to be a passing of the torch onto a new character.

With the age of Mahershala Ali and the film still being a few years off I can't see him committing too long term.

The movie may still be class but the more of Ali as Blade, the better

@JakeyChappers - if the movie is a passing of the torch, seriously should have just gotten Wesley Snipes
Origame

@JakeyChappers - he's only slightly older than Robert Downey Jr. When he took up the role of iron man. I really don't see that as them needing to immediately go with a passing of the torch movie. Even assuming a long production process, you can at least get a trilogy as well as a few crossover appearances before talking about him leaving. And this phase is so full of passing the torch stories, we don't need to introduce another character to simply pass the torch immediately.
Chappers
Chappers - 9/2/2021, 5:50 AM
@Origame - It's a good point but Downey was 42 when Iron Man actually released, Mahershala will be about 50 when Blade releases. That's still a significant enough difference. I'm hopeful there isn't an instant passing of the torch though
Origame
Origame - 9/2/2021, 6:47 AM
@JakeyChappers - I'm not gonna argue against that but that still means 6 years before he gets to downey's current age, meaning it's still plenty of time to hold the role before considering leaving.

Besides, in Hollywood age doesn't matter as much as the age you look. And Ali looks really young compared to his actual age. I could see him playing a mid 30s blade in this movie, and depending on how they're approaching his abilities he can stay on for as long as he's willing to.

@JakeyChappers - I dunno, he's developed somewhat of a Sean Bean resume. He may very well be one and done, but I hope not.
