Marvel Studios announced it was developing a Blade reboot way back in 2019 at the San Diego Comic-Con. Mahershala Ali hit the stage to close out the panel alongside Kevin Feige, confirming he would play the MCU's Daywalker.

The pandemic followed, as did a voice cameo in Eternals, but development on the reboot has since hit more than a few stumbling blocks. Blade has lost several writers and directors, and we recently learned that the plan now is to produce it for less than $100 million.

That's raised some eyebrows, but it's a figure which suggests we're getting a grounded, gritty take on the character rather than an effects-laden blockbuster which feels like more of the same from Marvel Studios.

Confirming this isn't a typical MCU movie is the fact we can now confirm Blade will be R-rated!

It appears Deadpool 3 and the TV-MA Echo have opened the door to Marvel Studios delivering stories which arent just your typical popcorn blockbuster. Talking to Deadline, Blade director Yann Demange said. "They gave me the R, which is so important."

"I come out of [his new short film, Dammi] wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work. But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor."

"I'm excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way. I love him for that," the filmmaker adds. "He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen."

The fact we're getting an R-rated Blade movie is bound to ease the minds of many fans, especially those worried the Daywalker would be watered down. Wesley Snipes' movies benefitted from having a darker tone (and heaps of bloody violence) and we'd guess the same will be the case for this version too.

In recent years, Marvel Studios has come under fire for being too formulaic, but a $100 million R-rated story about this vampire-hunting anti-hero - starring an Oscar-winning actor - feels like a good way to subvert the expectations of moviegoers and prove there's still plenty of life left in this franchise amid so-called superhero fatigue.

Blade is currently set to be released on February 14, 2025. Stay tuned for updates.

Not surprised. Marvels trying to course correct now, won’t be surprised if DDBA is TV MA as well, with the inevitable Punisher reboot following suit. Hoping MCU can return to form with all of this, Loki is great but let’s see what else they can cook up, and if they can stay consistent with it.

@JustAChillDude - honestly , the only thing that has happened is their quantity has increased atleast imo

The quality has always had its ups and downs from Phase 1-4 imo

It’s weird that people have such rose tinted glasses for the previous phases now.

@TheVisionary25 - yep. Phase 4 was every bit as good as Phase 1 or 2.

It gets knocked because it just happened to follow Phase 3, which was one of the best runs in cinematic history.

@Scarilian - let's face it, 50% of the people working at Disney were created in a lab for specific purposes. Wouldn't be surprised if a scientist working there had a sense of humor.

@marvel72 - Why are you always so negative? If anything, they’re building him and these super natural characters up for Midnights Suns, but if not, what’s wrong with him interacting with the Avengers?

@JustAChillDude - I haven't got problem with interacting with The Avengers what I am saying is Blade will be R-Rated until he is put in an Avengers movie which will be PG.

It's interesting, because hyper online people since 2022 or so have been extremely critical of every decision Marvel makes,

And when it appears Marvel has honestly been listening to the good faith critique and are making adjustments,

These same people still find things to be negative about. And so it makes me wonder why we ever listen to them at all. Bad faith criticism is attention seeking childishness.

@ShellHead -
I don't think this is 'faith' as much as they dropped the budget so low and the film will be so unconnected to anything else that they simply don't care how much viewership it gets.

They also seem to be mistaking the problem with the MCU as being that they were too comedic/goofy hence Deadpool 3, Echo, Daredevil, Blade... all of which are aiming for a higher age rating or a more serious tone.

@Scarilian - man just say you don't like these films and go about your day. A lot of people put serious work into the MCU, and that's not a free pass for them to get praise, but it is a rebuttal to the concept that these movies are lazy, soulless, or dumb.

That's what I mean about good vs. bad critique. Keep focus on the missteps of the art itself, and don't go about it with a bitterness for the people involved. It makes the whole thing look like a cash in, trying to be the loudest heckler at a concert to get attention.
