Wesley Snipes Looking To IRON MAN Robert Downey Jr. As Roadmap For Career Revival

Wesley Snipes Looking To IRON MAN Robert Downey Jr. As Roadmap For Career Revival

A lot of folks will argue that 1998's Blade was the beginning of the current superhero film movement that's currently dominated by Marvel Studios. That makes it somewhat ironic that the actor who arguably started it all has now switched roles with his former, uninsurable co-star.

At one point of time in Hollywood, an equal argument could have been made that either Denzel Washington or Wesley Snipes was the predominant, African-American male actor in Tinseltown. Fast forward approximately 25 years later to present-day and it's jarring to think about the vastly different trajectories that Washington and Snipe's career's have taken. One has gone on to accumulate Golden Globe and Academy Award statues while the other became somewhat of an afterthought, wallowing in a string of direct-to-DVD action films. Nevertheless, after a three-year stint in prison for tax evasion, Snipes could be poised for a resurgence, thanks to Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables 3. And who is Snipes looking to as an example for how to rebuild a career? Why none other than his US Marshals and One Night Stand co-star Robert Downey Jr.  Said Snipes on the current superhero craze, "You know, if I would have understood the potential of… doing, or adapting comic book characters to feature films, and also the tie-in to gaming and digital technology, when I was doing the first Blade films, then I’d be in a different business right now. I’d be in a whole different ball game." Snipes continued, "Well, I still would have done, the, er, you know… er, the dramatic work, and probably had a kind of cushion to do experimental work, because the economics in that kind of business are huge. There were empires and institutions that were built off the Blade franchise. I mean, look at Marvel now, to this day. It’s a megalith!" This is the model that many of the superhero actors we know and love such as Downey, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman and others currently utilize. Coined as the "One for them, one for me" approach, these actors use their superhero turns to create bank-ability and studio confidence which translates to leverage that's used to finance and produce smaller, and dramatically heavier indie projects.

When Snipes was working with Downey on 'Marshals' and 'Stand', it was at a time when Downey was in a downward spiral, fueled by drugs and alcohol and marked by brief rehab and jail stints. "He was walking through the fire. He was walkin’ on coals,” recounts Snipes But Wesely says that even at that time, Downey's talent was still undeniable. Looking at where Downey was back then and where he is now, Snipes is hopeful for a similar resurgence with his own career. Said the Blade actor on Downey's rise to the top of Tinseltown, "It’s an inspiration not just to me but to others, that you can go through hell and high water, and you can have ups and downs, but there’s always a brighter day. This too shall pass. And if you keep your skills together, you open and you create opportunities for yourself."

Perhaps Snipes can put in a call to his old friend Downey and together, spur Marvel let Snipes put on the black leather and dark shades for one more turn as the half-vampire, half-human superhero? Time will only tell but Eric Brooks fans around the world will surely be keeping their fingers crossed for Blade 4.

Plz bring back Snipes to the comic book world.
After seeing what their doing with Batman in Dawn of Justice. Do the same for Snipes in Blade, a seasoned Blade character that's still kicking ass in the MCU!!!

Snipes is great, and the first Blade is still one of the best CBM's to date. I'd be all for it.

did yall know blade was made by newline which was part of time warner ( the group wb is part of). A lot of marvel fanboys hate the thought of the mcu being kicked of by the other side but that is the case. I dont think blade would work in this disneyfied world

They could easily bring him back as an Older Blade in the current MCU. They could even keep the canon. Nothing in the Blade Trilogy would prevent that. In fact I wonder if he could exist along the others in the Netflix world. Imagine seperate Daredevil, Blade and Punisher series on Netflix along with Heroes for Hire and they could all cross over to each other. It could be the gritty on the ground MCU world. Let the Avengers fight the Thanos's of the Universe and have these guys taking care of the day to day business on the streets.

@Danbojohnj GOTG is great, go see it. Not sure how I compare it to Blade but it was great seeing a Marvel movie and not knowing everything. I was discovering the characters as the audience was and that has never happened in a Marvel movie for me. I never read GOTG so if you have maybe that benefit doesn't apply.

Adding Vampire's to the MCU is a risky gamble that I don't think would pay off. Because you would have to explain while we haven't seen them until now. That whole "we stayed in the shadows" things won't work either.

Blade 3 was bad but still can watch it. Can't say the same for IM3.

Blade in the MCU?

Absolutely. Blade was indeed the movie that started the modern CBM movement as we know it. This character needs to return to the big screen under the Mavel Studios banner.

Snipes playing Blade again?

It will depend heavily on Snipes' attitude. According to the infamous Patton Oswald interview, Snipes was being a complete pain in the ass diva on the set. This made the whole process very uncomfortable for the entire cast and crew, which is clearly noticeable in the final product.

SimyJo

Well Wesley Snipes kind of blew it for anything Blade related in the future when allegedly he got it so twisted while filming and was so high he was actually believing he WAS Blade and (for some bizarre reason) only communicating via post-it notes (which he signed 'Blade')- when he had a serious falling-out with the Blade Trinity director.

I kind of think he's a bit past it now anyway, he'd probably hurt himself if he threw himself about like he used to at his age.

If they make an old Blade it could be a lot better. That way they could say the vampires are almost extint, because if there is a lot of vampires in the MCU it could get very stupid
