BLUE BEETLE Star Xolo Maridueña On Prepping For His DCEU Role And His "Awesome" Superhero Suit

Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña has talked about going from Cobra Kai to the DC Extended Universe, revealing that he's already tried on his "awesome" superhero costume. Read on for further comments...

Xolo Maridueña has made a name for himself kicking ass in Netflix's Cobra Kai, but his biggest role yet will come in DC Comics movie Blue Beetle. Originally scheduled for an HBO Max premiere, it was recently confirmed that Jaime Reyes' live-action debut will arrive in theaters on August 18, 2023, when director Angel Manuel Soto will give the character the big screen treatment he deserves.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Maridueña talked about going from karate to superhero action.

"Honestly, it feels like I've skipped a few stepping stones. 'Cobra Kai' has been such a wonderful opportunity, (and) it feels a little bit intimidating being this is my first movie and it's in a realm that's totally different than anything I've ever worked on," the actor confessed. "I'm nervous, but I'm excited. It's gonna be important, not only for Latinos and to see people of color, brown people, represented onscreen, but also show a story that we haven't really seen before."

As for whether he's seen his Blue Beetle costume yet, the actor confirmed he's already tried it on and shared high praise for the suit first revealed in concept art during last October's DC FanDome event. "We've done two suit fittings," Maridueña teased. "They're hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I've seen the suit, and it looks awesome."

Blue Beetle is a step in the right direction for the DC Extended Universe, particularly when it comes to bringing a greater number of diverse superheroes to the big screen. Fans have been hoping to see Reyes ever since a TV show featuring the character was first rumoured, and a movie promises to be an effective showcase for what he can do in a live-action setting.

As noted, Blue Beetle is set to be released on August 18, 2023.

He seems pretty humble. I hope it does well.

For me personally, as a brown person, i never felt that i needed a character to be brown to have a deeper connection to them. But apparently that is different for other people. If the character is good, who cares what colour the skin is.

In fact growing up reading Spider-Man and Captain America i never thought of them as "white". It never even crossed my mind.

I guess it was cool that Storm was black, but that was because it meant diversity in the team itself and not to do with me as the reader.

@TheManWithoutFear - same. When I pretended I was Batman I wasn’t even me, I was Michael Keaton.

@TheManWithoutFear - Thank you! I was just about to comment this.

The average white American has about as much in common with Thor as the average black American does with Black Panther -- i.e. practically nothing! So why shouldn't a black person enjoy Thor as much a white guy (or vice versa).

I love Blue Beetle and I was just watching Cobra Kai and telling my wife how excited I am for the film but now I just feel like they're only making it for "representation" (🙄) and not because the character actually deserves a good movie...

@TheWalkingCuban - Haha yeah. I used to pop 3 fingers out from my fist and suddenly i was Wolverine. The fact that i looked nothing like Wolverine was not ever a thought i had haha. I used to quote the 90s x-men series all day long

@TheManWithoutFear - by that time I was a lil more self aware but yeah, same thing.

@YouCray04 - As a kid, I identified with Peter Parker. He was a nerdy kid from NYC. I was a nerdy kid who lived near NYC. I was ok with the Black Panther comics. But I mostly read his team up adventures though. Just because I'm black didn't mean I identified with a powerful king of a fictional nation who battled for the throne. I was dealing with more down to earth scenarios.

That doesn't mean representation isn't important. The black representation of music/movies/sports/writing/etc. Back in the 80s and 90s was an important building block for my creativity, and confidence. But sometimes nowadays it comes off as an empty, corporate checklist.

@TheManWithoutFear - My thoughts exactly, I'm a Latino born and raised in South America and that is how I've always felt as well.

@DarthOmega - As a Latino I agree. Not something that is directly important but I'll definitely cheer those on who feel joy out of being represented.

I've seen a lot of people really enjoying that representation from Encanto and good for them. Plus the movie is amazing

@Evansly - I haven't seen that one. I heard it was interesting though. The main thing I watch on Disney+ is Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic. Will Smith is in this awesome documentary on there called Welcome to Earth. It's jaw droppingly gorgeous. Especially in 4K

@DarthOmega - I will definitely check out Welcomr to Earth!

My kids love Encanto and the songs are great. The messages were also relevant to me personally so that contributes to my enjoyment

@TheManWithoutFear - that's really refreshing to read. Growing up I didn't think about Black Panther's, Storm's, Luke Cage's or Spider-Man's skin colour. They were/are just cool characters I admired.

Finished Season 4 of Cobra Kai and absolutely loved it. Probably the most fun show on Netflix and one that everyone loves.
Excited for Xolo and cannot wait to see what he does with the role.

@SimplyAz - I've watched a few episodes now and I still like it as much as the previous three seasons. Definitely a ton of fun indeed

@bkmeijer -

Definitely a fun ride, glad to have more returning characters from the movies.

Between this and my love of the Karate Kid movies, I really wish I had stuck with Karate lessons

@SimplyAz - for me it has the opposite effect. Although Cobra Kai is obviously over-dramatized, it doesn't make me miss it. The ''no be there'' is probably still the best advice

Really look forward to this a lot. Same with Batgirl, Static and Zatanna. All characters that I think deserve a chance on the big screen

I’m so ready for this film. I’d have loved a buddy cop style film with Kord Beetle and Booster Gold but, to be honest I’m just excited about anytime DC remembers they have more characters than Batman

He seems a great fit for Jaime. I just want word on if there will be any Ted content at all in this. Hyped either way, but Ted is still my favorite Beetle.

Ever since I saw S1 of Cobra Kai, I said this guy could make a good Blue Beetle. Fast forward to now, I think I should become a casting director lol

Hype for this. Obviously Ted needs at least a cameo but I’d love to see a Booster Gold appearance as well (especially if he’s played by Alan Ritchson)

I don't see Ted Kord popping up until at least the second or third movie, ala Asteria in WW84. The problem is the GA won't know who Ted Kord is, let alone who Jamie Reyes is. If Jamie is gonna be the BB in the JL going forward (if the Flash rumors are true he will be) then they REALLY need to establish the character first. BB is not as familiar to GA as SpiderMan is. So bringing in Ted Kord in the first on would in my opinion be very confusing to GA.

Plus, not for nothing, since this is the first Latino superhero on the big screen I would hate to see them dilute that moment by bringing in the white guy who donned the suit first. Give the Latinx community their time to shine before bringing in Ted Kord. Let him show up ala Asteria at the end of the second movie if he shows up at all. Just sayin'...

NinnesMBC - 1/5/2022, 2:10 PM
@BecauseICare - They can present Ted Kord as this heroic figure from the past that died while on a mission and he left the bar very high when Jaime is just beginning, similarly to how Stargirl handled Starman in the show.

It sounds good that they have apparently built a practical Blue Beetle suit for him to use on set and that it won't be purely made most of the time in CGI. I am expecting it to be similar to how they shot Iron Man scenes in the MCU.

A TV show would also fit the character maybe.

Good luck to him for next year.

Good to know there's an actual costume, I thought they were going full CGI for this one given the nature of it.
