AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Chris Evans Admits That He Already Misses Being The MCU's Captain America

Chris Evans has passed on the Captain America mantle to Anthony Mackie, but in a new interview, the Avengers: Endgame star confirmed that he already misses being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Chris Evans has appeared in more Marvel Studios movies than any other actor, and made his big screen debut as Steve Rogers in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. His time as the Star Spangled Avenger came to an end in Avengers: Endgame when we learned Captain America had travelled back through history and decided to live out his life alongside Peggy Carter.

During a recent interview with Backstage to promote Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob, Evans reflected on the pressures which came with taking on a role as iconic as Captain America in the MCU.

"There was this enormous expectation that these people already had in their minds, this idea of who this character was, and you have to respect that," he explained. "Audiences are part of what will make [these films] work, and I owe that group my understanding of what they see."

Evans also talked about his decision to walk away from the role, and admitted that he already misses suiting up as a member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. "I absolutely loved my time with Marvel; I already miss it, but there’s no denying that it is very exciting to just have complete freedom to pursue whatever my creative appetite wants."

Despite Evans having that freedom to explore very different projects moving forward, speculation continues to run rampant that he will reprise the role at some point, whether that's as an older Steve Rogers or in some sort of movie or series exploring what happened when he travelled back in time.

Are you hoping to see more of Evans as Captain America in the MCU?

So do we, Chris. So do we.

In seriousness, I'm glad that he was Cap. It was the perfect superhero role for him and even more so that he's moved on.

@TheLight -
Cap is a hard one to pull off but he absolutely nailed it. Having an actual end to his saga was also kind of revolutionary.

Top-notch casting. I know people are going to make a fuss about "no stakes" and all that, but I can see him coming back later down the line, even if it's just one film. That's the good thing about comic book franchises. No one's ever really gone.

The MCU without Steve

Yup yup, nothing to do woth fame and fortune at all 😉

Pretty sure I will be missing any job too that pays in millions AND brings a lot of fans too.

That being said, he IS the Captain and would love to see him keep going even when he is at the age in real life like in the last mins of Endgame. 😀

@TheOtherOn - the fortune I'm sure he's fine with but yes talked about anxiety before. I don't think he ever wanted the fame or the large crowds

@TheOtherOn - To be fair, unless he has some horrible expensive addiction, it’s unlikely the fame or fortune have disappeared much in the year since Endgame released.

@TheOtherOn -
I read an interview with Bill Murray and someone asked him how awesome it was to be rich and famous and he replied "Try the rich part and get back with me". Fame is majorly messed up and it's hard to have any kind of a real life when everyone knows who you are. The gilded cage looks comfortable from the outside but in the end it's just a cage.

I would miss that experience as well. Becoming such an icon to so many people, and being so synonymous with the role that nobody will think that they can recast or find somebody better. I am very sad he left when he did cause now we'll never see captain America have more interactions with some of the new heroes, or more than 2 interactions with Spider-Man.

With that being said secret wars is the only event I could ever see where they would bring him and/or RDJ back. Any other reasoning would feel cheap. This isn't like the comics, the world has to grow and people have to die and stay dead. So not everyone will always be together but the time we had with them was glorious. It goes to show how well Evans played the part when cap was my favorite character in the entire MCU, even more than my main man Spidey.

You did brilliantly Chris Evans, and you'll always be our captain.

@Mrcool210 - very well said
I give a lot of credit to evans but also give a little to russos and a little to feige. Captain america didn't really click to me until winter soldier. The first movie was great. Excellent themes and scenes. But winter soldier was where they got his power level down, his attitude, his beliefs, and where he truly fit in this world

@Vigor - This. As much as I love the first Cap movie and Avengers 1, Cap was so underpowered. That opening boat scene in Winter Soldier made my jaw drop. I thought, "finally, THIS is Cap!" Then, he goes off and beats up a Quinjet (He. Beat. Up. A Quinjet.), and I knew all was right with the world.

I shall not discuss Mjolnir scene in Endgame, lest my nerd tears begin flowing all over again.

@samantha1990 - stop! I youre getting me excited all over again and then I'll have to go rewatch winter soldier. My fiance is already sick of me after she's been forced to watch it a dozen times lol

You can have a Captain America movie set in the 50s with him teaming up with Wolverine and the story is about the Weapon Plus Program. Introduce Omega Red.

@Reeds2Much - I assume he means this timeline:

@Chewtoy - Why go through all the trouble of introducing characters that won't be canon to the main continuity only to discard them and have to reintroduce them with a new backstory?
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 7/2/2020, 7:20 AM
@Reeds2Much - Well, one, it wasn’t my suggestion. But to give my opinion on it, I’d say that it wouldn’t have to be the introduction of Wolverine... it could definitely come after he’s been introduced to the MCU.

But really, I would not mind in the slightest a stand-alone Cap/Wolverine period film regardless of whether it tied into anything else or not.
TheBlueMorpho
TheBlueMorpho - 7/2/2020, 8:13 AM
@Reeds2Much -

Why wouldn't be canon? Its just what Cap was doing in the 50s after Endgame. And since Wolverine is super old you can see what he was doing during that time as well. You don't have to contradict anything.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 7/2/2020, 9:29 AM
@Chewtoy - That WW2 montage left a lot of room for Cap to cross paths with a plucky Canadian black ops soldier with an uncanny habit of surviving wounds that would ordinarily kill someone.

Personally, I'm not super interested in that sort of thing as a way to introduce Jimmy Howlett, because all I really care about is post-Weapon-X-probably-amnesiac Logan. It's a fun Easter egg to have Cap and Wolverine hanging out back in the day, but it's not a great intro to the character in my mind.

@TheBlueMorpho - Reeds2Much is saying that Endgame-Peggy-Dancing-Cap occurs in a splintered timeline, so any Wolverine he interacts with will be part of that splintered timeline, too. Whereas MCU-Prime Wolverine never got the chance to meet Cap in the 50's, since the only existing MCU-Prime Cap in the 50's was a Capsicle.

(And yes, this is an assumption Reeds2Much is making, because there are contradicting reports of how the time travel worked in this context. Personally, I think the splinter reality is the right way to do it, but Feige could romantically zig when the most logical route is the zag.)

I remember watching Endgame and when he was still alive after the final battle, I thought “Yes! Cap survives. The rumors weren’t true.” Then of course, boom. Time travel and old Cap. I would love to see him come back and not as old man Cap.
