Captain America: Civil War opened to $7M (£4.8M)  on Friday in the UK; which results to the second biggest opening of 2016; just ahead of Deadpool, but way behind Batman v Superman's $9M (£6.1M).

Though this an amazing achievement for Civil War as those figures are DOUBLE Iron Man 3, and 30% ahead of Age of Ultron.  It seems like the superhero duo are onto a huge $18M opening; which would give the film the second biggest opening weekend behind Batman v Superman's $20M.

It will have the advantage this coming Monday as it's a Banking Holiday.  So except $22 - 25 million opening 4 day total; which will put it even with the Man of Steel & The Dark Knight.

Worldwide sum up;

Captain America: Civil War, which opened yesterday in an additional 8 international markets to take the total number opened to date to 38 territories. The film continues to place at #1 in all markets as its three-day total is now $84 million, tracking on par with Avengers: Age of Ultron in the same suite of markets.

New releases in key markets include $7.3 million in Mexico, #1 industry opening day of all-time beating Ultron's previous record. In the UK the film opened #1 with $7 million, +33% ahead of Ultron and more than double Iron Man 3. In Japan it brought in $2.8 million, more than double Iron Man 3 and not comparable to Ultron, which opened on a Saturday. South Korea, which opened on Wednesday, is leading the way with $12.6 million so far.

FOREIGN TOTAL 4/27/16 $84,000,000 4/29/16
Australia 4/28/16 $4,500,000 4/29/16
Brazil 4/28/16 $5,400,000 4/29/16
France 4/27/16 $5,200,000 4/29/16
Germany 4/28/16 $3,700,000 4/29/16
Hong Kong 4/27/16 $3,200,000 4/29/16
Japan 4/29/16 $2,800,000 4/29/16
Malaysia 4/28/16 $2,200,000 4/29/16
Mexico 4/29/16 $7,300,000 4/29/16
Philippines 4/27/16 $3,800,000 4/29/16
South Korea 4/27/16 $12,600,000 4/29/16
Taiwan 4/27/16 $3,800,000 4/29/16
Thailand 4/27/16 $2,700,000 4/29/16
United Kingdom 4/29/16 $7,000,000 4/29/16

This puts the film behind Batman v Superman by a hefty $66M; but if you erase BvS' China Gross; Batman and Superman still lead the way with over $40M.

Before you come in saying "Batman v Superman" opened everywhere on Friday. That is true; but so as Captain America. Civil War has opened in 65% of the world; and all major markets (except 4; Argentina, China, Italy, and Russia) according to Deadline.

Not a bad start for Iron Man and Captain America. The duo are expected to open with $190 - 200 million; which is $50 - 60 million behind Batman v Superman; or $20M behind if you remove China's gross.

BvS was riding on the reputation of the two characters from the comic books.

Civil War however is riding on the reputations established in the previous films and the Marvel films normally rely on 'word of mouth' rather than a ridiculous amount of marketting.

Either way, the longevity of Civil War will be the deciding factor. While BvS slumped very quickly after release, Civil War is showing signs of a continued good reception meaning it should easily outpace BvS.

As a sidenote the cinema i was in for the midnight screening was completely packed, not a single spare seat. Was insane the amount of people seeing the film, all three showings (3D, 3D Imax and 2D were completely sold out)

@HappyHater - Yeah, lot of this article seems flame baity, but its pretty clear to anyone at this stage that the deciding factor is longevity of the film and its success over the next few weeks rather than immediate opening numbers.

Opening numbers mean very little as its just initial hype, it'll be afterwards when people are aware of the critical and public response that we'll see the drop and determine which is better in the eyes of the general audience.
