Joe Russo Tells How CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Differs From The "Civil War" Comics

During their appearance at Wizard World New Orleans, Joe and Anthony Russo took many questions from the fans who attended the event. Even though there was a lot of meaningless questions, one of the notable questions asked how closely does the Captain America: Civil War film follow the Civil War comics. Joe Russo answered the question and revealed that their cinematic universe is completely different from the comics. "The Marvel Cinematic Universe is based upon all the movies that have preceded it. It's the Cinematic Universe, it's not the comic book universe. We don't have the issues that the comics do. We don't have all the daring storylines that they do and tie-ins to create what was required to make the original Civil War comics storyline. We're taking the concept of Civil War, the core concept of it, and we're applying it to our storytelling in the Cinematic Universe in its own way. We have to find stories that work within the Cinematic Universe to tell their story." He then added, "I think you'll see when you see the movie, you'll understand how it takes what's come before and builds upon it to create this conflict."

Joe Russo then revealed another prominent reason why he thinks a live-action movie is totally different from a Comic Book. "I think our job is to surprise you. As a comic book fan, I don't want to go in and see what I already know. I prefer to go in and be surprised. I like when a story teller throws a left curve at me and I'm surprised. That's why I want to go see the movie." He then continued, "A literal adaptation, I should just go read the book again. I think that's what's interesting about different movies. We have two hours and they have years worth of issues." He's got a point there! What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain. Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, and Martin Freeman, Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016.

Hearing these guys talk about movies is a real treat. They always have introspective aspects that you can focus on. Unlike some other directors who like to call their projects "awesome and super-cool"

Anyone who is so certain that Cap ISN'T going to die needs a prompt backhand. If your reasoning is, "but...but...he's filming for Infinity War...", then you need two backhands.

If both sides of the Marvel v DC crowd took this to heart, I think it would dampen at least some of that tension.

The civil war comic had nearly EVERYONE acting out of character just to add Mark Millar's trademark cheap "WTF/OH SNAP!"-moments.

I'm glad the movie differs.

Chasing that "Surprise" is exactly what's wrong with filmmaking, these days.

And comic-book adaptations are the biggest victim of this. They don't get the respect that books or plays get. Not even when a movie is based on specific and classic material like Civil War.

12 MCU movies, but trolls only focus on 1...........the one that made almost double than what their "savior" movie did, that came out the same year

TDK was [frick]ing amazing, too bad it's not part of the DCU, huh?

I'm sure Snyder can make an epic on the level of Nolan.........heh

"1 DC movie the dark knight is better then all 12 MCU movies combined"

Hahhhahahaha, I love that movie, but wow. Your insecurities with posting that on a Marvel Civil War article says it all

When in doubt, name-drop Nolan. It's like using a trump card in the wrong game.
