SPIDER-MAN Star Tom Holland Has No Idea What CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Is About
Tom Holland, Marvel/Sony's new Spider-Man, recently sat down to speak on how little he actually knows about the plot of Captain America: Civil War. Plus, see what he had to say about the auditioning process and working with Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Hemsworth!
"I don't even know what Civil War is about."
So, there you have it, Spider-Man star Tom Holland (In The Heart Of The Sea) knows as little about the plot of Captain America: Civil War as your average everyday fan (well, actually he probably does know a tad more, but I digress). As for why he knows so little about a film he's (definitely) starring in, Holland said it was by choice, claiming he didn't want to know anything because he didn't want to accidentally spill any of the film's secrets while on his current press tour: "I was only working on it for a week or two weeks or something. So they offered for me to read the script, and I said ‘No, I don’t want to read it, because I’ll be doing all these interviews and I’ll end up telling secrets and stuff. I’ve got such a big mouth.’ So I actually don’t know what it’s about. I’m going to watch this film as an audience member, rather than someone who is in it. I’ll be like, ‘I wonder what my bits are about?'" He won't be the only one to ask that question as many Marvel fans will be wondering the same thing for the next few months.
Over the past few days, much has been said about the extensive auditioning process Holland went through to finally land the role of Spider-Man with the Russo Brothers finally speaking publicly about his presence in their film at CCXP 2015. After hearing about some of the praise the directors recently heaped on him, the 19-year-old Holland credited his dance and gymnastics background for lending a helping hand and ultimately giving him the edge over his competition: "Any opportunity I got, I was just doing back flips and stuff to try to convince them. Like, ‘Look Marvel! I’m a gymnast! Please give me the role! I’m so close to sticking to walls now!’" As many of you can attest, his backflipping skills are no joke.
Before actually landing the role of a lifetime, Holland had to screentest with Marvel's two biggest stars - Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) & Chris Evans (Captain America). We'll have a little more about his reading with Evans later, but when speaking about working with Downey Jr., a two-time Academy Award-nominee, Holland expressed his nervousness and how Downey Jr. helped calm his nerves: "It was so intimidating, but the thing was, I walked into the room on this soundstage, and they had this little set, and Robert took me aside and said, ‘Listen, I remember my screen test for Iron Man. I remember how terrified I was. Just think of it as an audition. It’s nothing too scary. If you get it wrong, we’ll just start again. No pressure.’ But that kind of raised the pressure a little bit for me. But he was great and super supportive, and because he said he’d been there and had been in the same situation, it made me relax a little bit."
Prior to enlisting for Civil War and working with the Avengers, Holland had already sort of been broken in by one of the founding Avengers - Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor. When asked about working with his In The Heart Of The Sea co-star, Holland reflected on his first time meeting the God of Thunder (and former Sexiest Man Alive): "When I first met him, it was a bit of a ‘pinch me’ moment. I was 16 and a huge Marvel fan, and when he first walked on set, it was a little bit daunting, because he is Thor. But he’s so down-to-earth and so nice and professional and hard-working. He’s an all-around good dude. I thought that Hollywood superstars like himself would just be divas who do whatever they want, and he was kind of the first one I had ever met. But he wasn’t like that at all. He never complained, which is a massive lesson that I learned. I was like, ‘If he’s not complaining, who am I to complain?’"
Holland also touched on his hopes for eventually crossing paths with Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could happen as early as his solo Spider-Man feature or Thor: Ragnarok, although Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 seems like the more likely bet for the two heroes to finally meet: "The Marvel Universe is so huge, and I don’t even know where Thor is right now. He’s off somewhere. I’d love to cross paths with Chris again. We get along really well, though he’s a little too handsome for me."
