Anthony Mackie Talks CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Speaking with News Day, actor Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, The Adjustment Bureau) discusses his recent casting as Sam Wilson/The Falcon in Marvel Studios' highly anticipated sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He gives a run down of the character's biography, and reveals that it's a "huge honor" for him to be portraying the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics as well as being somebody that his son, nephews and nieces could idolize. For News Day's full interview with Mackie (in which he discusses the impact that The Hurt Locker has had on his career, among other things), click the link below.

"I’m playing the Falcon. He’s this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer. His plane crashed, and he was genetically altered, and he can fly, has telepathic powers. He’s the first African-American superhero. It makes me feel all the work I’ve done has been paying off. I have a son, nephews and nieces, and I love the idea that they can dress up as the Falcon on Halloween. They now have someone they can idolize. That’s a huge honor for me."

Chris Evans is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America, while Sebastian Stan will return to play Bucky Barnes (who becomes the assassin "Winter Soldier", as suggested by the title). Marvel Studios are currently looking for the film's female lead, with Anna Kendrick (50/50), Imogen Poots (Fright Night) and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) all said to be up for the unspecified role. Joe and Anthony Russo (Community) are set to direct, while the script was written by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. The story picks up "where The Avengers leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world."

With filming expected to begin in March, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to hit theaters April 4th, 2014.

Sooooo, what's wrong with idolizing a superhero that's Caucasian? Don't get me wrong I'm happy for the news and Anthony, but again, why can't the nieces and nephews and his son, idolize any other super hero??? Does the super hero need to be the same race?

@rocknSntchRvlvr

He didn't say anything as wrong with that. He was showing pride for his characters race.

I've heard and seen Mackie make sly insinuations about race, but this is not one of them. He was adressing his family looking up to him.

It really is important for other races to have someone represent them, showing diversity is important & logical.
If superpowers really existed then many races would have them.

The Falcon has been a partner to Cap many, many times so his appearance makes sense but Black Panther MUST get his own movie,if done correct it would blow minds!

@ pux

falcon is a part of the winter soldier storyline so he should be in it.

as for having a movie before luke cage & black panther,he should have before luke cage but not black panther purely for the fact that he's been in the comics longer.

black panther fantastic four 52 (1966)
falcon captain america 117 (1969)
luke cage hero for hire 1 (1972)

of course black panther & luke cage are more popular than the falcon, but he is needed for the movie.

@rocknsntchrvr- that's like asking what's wrong with worshipping a white Jesus. The context here is The history of White and black race relations in America. America has been very under handed in its portrayal of blacks in the media, movies and television. They have protrayed white is alright (even though Caucasians aren't white skinned, their closer to pink) and black is evil. So many young black kids grew up with out positive role models that looked like them. I grew up idolizes the rifle man, mccloud, Steve Austin the six million dollar man and Evil kinevil to name a few. But what this does overtime is to lower self worth and self identity.

The hero's journey is color blind. All mythic hero's can be protrayed with various skin types, reflecting the diversity seen on earth. If Caucasians want a Caucasian Jesus let them have one, if people of color want Jesus to look like them, that's fine too. Black Americans deserve black hero's just as much as white AMERICAN'S deserve white one. There is nothing wrong with looking up to a hero no matter the skin color but don't be upset with this actor for stating finally my kin folks get a hero they can relate to. I still love Batman, Spidey and Cap, they are still my favorites but I understand where he's coming from.

Ok I didn't read the whole article and I don't feel I need to, but I'm kind of confused on what Anthony means by first Black superhero go mainstream.I mean I'm 20 and I'm pretty sure the first Black superhero to go mainstream was Spawn. Is Spawn not a superhero? What about Blade, is he not a superhero? Them 2 guys were mainstream. The Blade series even had 3 films that I thought were pretty good. So tell me is he saying he's the first Black superhero to go mainstream for a new generation...

But hey good for him on the role, I'm looking forward to seeing how he does, can't wait for this sequel.

Black Panther is the first black superhero from marvel but he is also African. Falcon is African American, but who knows' there might be hope for Black Panther to make a cameo. After all, in the comics, Black Panther gave Falcon a more advanced version of his flying harness so they might mention it in the movie as an easter egg.

AS long as we keep perpetuating the myth of race, there will always be racism. (hint- there is onlyone race of humans. The Human Race. Race and racism is a socio political term used to control, have power over and divide people. just sayin.)

When he meant first Black superhero, he meant like one of the first created, one of the originals. The Falcon came before Blade and way before Steel.

SN: Waiting patiently for the Black Panther movie :)
