Emily VanCamp Talks Researching 'Sharon Carter' For CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

The Revenge star reveals that prepping her S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Agent 13 role and learning her place in the Marvel universe was one of the most interesting aspects of joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

With the third season of Emily VanCamp's Revenge ABC series premiering tomorrow, the Canadian actress spoke with Fandango for their latest Bam! Pow! Zap! entry. But the Q&A eventually turned to Emily's role as Agent 13 in next summer's Marvel venture, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“One of the most interesting things was actually learning about it, to really start to understand just how grand this universe is,” VanCamp says of Sharon Carter's place within the Marvel universe. “Researching my character, I started to get interested in a lot of other things that I was reading. It was just a really fun process.” Of course, Agent 13 is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s code name for Sharon Carter, originally the younger sister of Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter then retconned as her niece, in the comics. But it's been implied that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will introduce the character as Steve Rogers' neighbor, Kate. “There are so many different versions of the character, so really what you have to do is sort of take all of that information and make it your own and hope that the fans like it,” says VanCamp. “It's a little bit of a gamble, and it's a little bit nerve-wracking at times, but that's also part of the fun.”

Marvel has tried to keep details about Agent 13 under wraps, but it's been implied that the character will have a minor role in The Winter Soldier and a prominent role in future installments. VanCamp does hint that she has a special chemistry with Chris Evans, but “I guess you'll see what kind when you see [the movie],” she says. On possibly reprising Agent 13 on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, VanCamp says, “We’ll see what they say!” But if so, she'd prefer her espionage catsuit over the frocks of her Revenge TV series. “It was a lot more comfortable, I have to say,” she laughs. “The great thing about Captain America 2 was that the Russo brothers really wanted to root it into a sense of reality. I think people will be pleasantly surprised that you feel so immersed into this world because… it has a very real feel to it.” What do you think?

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014.

Jollem

Love how you blame Nolan when Marvel is purposely hiring these directors who want to copy his realism.

Nolans success is a clear thing Marvel has wanted to replicate and they got it tenfold with Iron Man 3.

Now be prepared for whatever works financial wise over comic accuracy.

Perfect casting.
She's a very talented and beautiful actress and does have a resemblance to Hayley Atwell.

I heard she only has a small role in the movie, and isn't in action scenes. Which is a huge shame.

What's great about casting VanCamp, is that she's already a TV star. So she'd definitely be able to appear on AoS and probably will. Whereas we're never going to see RDJ, Chris Evans and ScarJo, or even Mark Ruffalo.

Movie looks far far better than the utterly dire and sub-standard first one, set pics alone have already convinced me of that, it will be interesting to see if it actually is.

Realm of possibility

That's a pretty good way of putting it

The SDCC footage of Cap 2 came off as one of those old school action thrillers

What comes to mind is U.S. Marshall, Bourne Films, and Shooters

this whole "real feel" the people involved are selling will probably end like a joke next year, once the movie is another summer action movie full of comedy moments, lol

Still interested in the sequel and the evolution of the characters, tho.

I can't wait for the next MCU films - just wish the wait was shorter between films
