Chatting recently with the Los Angeles Times' Geoff Boucher, Joe Johnston, director of Marvel's much-anticipated Captain America: The First Avenger film, speaks in confidence of the final product, describing it as more than what we're expecting.

“I watched the movie for the first time a few days ago and I just looked at the first cut and there is so much entertainment value — it’s just flat-out fun to watch,” Johnston said of his Marvel Studios film. “Maybe I’m somewhat biased — I was there [when we made it] — but, seriously, it’s funny, it’s exciting and there’s great visual effects. The movie is going to be something more than people are expecting. This movie is going to surprise some people. It is the origin story of Captain America but it is also something rare — it’s a period superhero film but there’s great action in it. You don’t normally think of guys driving around in 1939 sedans in an action film but there are some great action beats in it. It’s just a helluva lot of fun to watch.”

“All actors bring something unexpected to the role because they have to translate what’s on the page and make a real character out of the black-and-white text that’s there in the script. I hadn’t worked with Chris Evans and I wasn’t really that familiar with his work and I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away by the subtlety that he brought to the role. It was really exciting to watch him. He added layers to the character that were not on the page and layers that were not in the comic books. He made Steve Rogers into a real flesh-and-blood character and it was fantastic to watch.”

Starring Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, Stanley Tucci, Hayley Atwell, Dominic Cooper, and Neal McDonough Captain America: The First Avenger makes way to theaters on July 22, in 3D!

This doesn't sound assuring for some reason. Its almost as if he's unsure of the film. There's a difference between a quality film and something that's fun to watch. Transformers: ROTF was fun to watch...

Why wouldn't you become familiar with the leading actor's work? Wouldn't you want to know if he is a good actor and ensure that he brings this character to life and not just the same version of himself like Seth Rogen does? I want to see this and hope it's good. It all depends on if we have a great Cap character or if it's Human Torch with a blue helmet on.

Joe Johnston looks like the elder Bruce Wayne from
The Dark Knight Returns!!!

After Nolan movies they should make that or batman beyond!!

I Want the PERFECT music for Cap. I beleive we will have the visuals. Most comic book movies have had very bland music. It's like spiderman movie music was OKAY but nowhere near Superman the movie's music!!!

@soforizo

I don't have a lack of confidence at all. But I was kind of hoping to hear something more ecstatic from him. Mindblowing, breathtaking... anything similar to what we've been hearing about Thor or The Avengers. I just expect so much out of this movie based on everything we've seen and heard.

@Jakeroo

The music for Spider-Man is more than just OK. It's EPIC! I think it's as amazing as the Superman theme.

Something about this song when I hear it I keep imagining that scene where Cap *and possibly bucky* "die" after trying to disarm that bomb plane:

@TheBlackWidow

Perfect choice for music. The scene where Cap AND Bucky both die needs to be slow, emotional, and epic. I can just imagine Cap falling to his death as that music is playing.

Ok, I'm promising myself that I'm not gonna cry when that scene comes. I'm not gonna cry...

We're not getting the Saving Private Ryan part, Johnston has already said that.

Anyway, based on these quotes, call my Fox Mulder because: I WANT TO BELIEVE!

Werd. Cap in 2011! 'Nuff said.

It's a first cut of the film. They'll find the heart and soul of the characters and conflict, and put together a great film. 7+ months to find it.

@TheBlackWidow: While I agree that score is awesome (John Murphy can do no wrong in my eyes), it was already used to great affect in Kick-Ass. I don't think I'd want that exact track used again in another comic book movie.

I'd love to have Murphy come onboard and do a brand new score for the film, though.

Can't wait for this movie, though. I still have my doubts (I mean, it is Joe Johnston), but hopefully this will be a better-than-average comic book film. I really hope it gives Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and Kick-Ass a run for their money. Same goes for Thor.

@CaptainProg: I don't think it really matters what an actor has done before when casting a new film. All that matters is how they actually test for the role.

However, I think you are absolutely right in this particular case. As far as I know Chris Evans never screen tested for the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America. He was offered the part based solely on his past work and feedback from director Edgar Wright, who worked with Evans on "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World".

This could've turned out horrible for Marvel if Evans didn't suit the part, but thankfully they got lucky.

"I hadn't worked with Chris Evans and I wasn't really familiar with his work" but you cast him as the lead in possibly one of the most important movies of your career? Whoa! My bullshit detector is tingling! He absolutely does not sound confident. If he said something like "Just wait and see", you'd get the feeling he was pretty confident. It's almost like he's saying, "I know it sucks, but it's a period peice. I did the best I could with what I had. I never really worked with the actors before so whaddaya want from me?" When he says "Maybe I'm somewhat biased..." I interpret that as "I can't TELL you it sucks, cuz I made it, so gimme a break!"

It's amazing that when people lie repeatedly they inherently contradict themselves.

In an earlier interview he said that Chris Evan didn't have to audition, that he was ALREADY FAMILIAR with his work and championed him to Marvel studios who were happy with the choice.

Not saying that this means the movie will be bad but it shows the bullshit inherent in Hollywood publicity.

He, of course, must champion his film at this point and say that it is great. They all do that at this point in the production. If the movie is bad then months to years later then they come out and talk about all the problems and how they were never happy with the final product, etc., etc.

WOW! Thanks for that! I saw Sunshine but I didn't remember that song from it. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful music pieces ever! They played it in one of the Wolverine movie trailers and there in a critical scene in the pilot episode of fringe.

You are absolutely right. Is PERFECT for the death' scene of CA.

Thanks, I now know where to get that music.
