The review embargo for Captain Marvel finally lifted yesterday, and the general consensus is that Marvel Studios has another hit on its hands. While reviews for Carol Danvers' first solo adventure are mostly positive, the film has received some noticeable backlash.

Reviews for Captain Marvel have been far from perfect, but there was toxic negativity surrounding the movie almost from the start, largely believed to stem from a group of disgruntled folks who hadn't even seen the film yet. Their goal, it seems, was to "review bomb" Captain Marvel and create the perception that this was a bad movie that no one wanted to see (hoping to impact the opening weekend).

The group succeeded to a point, causing Captain Marvel's "Want To See" percentage to drop to an all-time Marvel low of 28%, and forcing Rotten Tomatoes to take action. The site responded by removing the feature ahead of the film's release.

During a recent press junket, Captain Marvel stars Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, and Samuel L. Jackson were asked their thoughts on the entire situation They seemed pretty unphased by it for the most part, but Jackson did offer some pretty valuable insight on the subject of anonymity on the internet.

"The mere fact that you would give voice or a platform to people who don't normally have a platform is part of the problem," Jackson said. "So, you can have an opinion that you really don't have to be responsible for because nobody's gonna see you, nobody's gonna challenge you on it. If you want to bring somebody down or just ruin somebody's day, you can say anything."

Captain Marvel currently sits at an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and has officially been certified fresh. It has a "generally favorable" 66 on Metacritic. CBM's very own Mark Cassidy called it a "fun, but largely uninspired origin story" in his review, which you can read here.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel flies into theaters on March 8, 2019.
