CAPTAIN MARVEL: Director Anna Boden And Kevin Smith Reveal How Stan Lee's Cameo Was Altered

Following the death of creator Stan Lee, the pop culture world went into mourning as the writer had been such a staple of the industry. This, in turn, prompted Marvel to change the structure of his cameo.

Captain Marvel is the first Marvel Studios film to be released following the death of Stan Lee, which meant that the legendary writer's passing was always going to be addressed in the movie. On top of the tearjerking and beautiful intro, his cameo had to be reworked as well.

According to director Anna Boden, the anticipated cameo was originally played for laughs before being altered. In addition to reshooting Larson's reaction shots, the scene was re-edited to become an emotional beat for the film. Speaking to Mashable she said:

Instead of just the pure laugh we had, we had a little bit of a smile from Captain Marvel in response to it, and she kind of breaks character for a moment. I think it reflects a little bit of what the audience is feeling, and we allowed that to happen.

Furthermore, Kevin Smith, whose Mallrats script is quoted and included in the scene, revealed that Lee's vocals had to be taken from his 1995 cult classic.

"This was when Stan was on his weaker side, only a few months before he passed," Smith recounted. "The voice wasn't quite there" on the day of shooting. Using alternate takes from Mallrats, the vocals heard in Captain Marvel are stright from Smith's film, resulting in the finished product that audiences emotionally embraced.

Smith goes on to eloborate on his Youtube channel.

The knowledge that he was pretending to be so weak that they had to dub over his lines for this cameo makes me sad that he's now in hiding to keep people from realizing he's an immortal energy vampire.

I guess the trolls were right, Brie Larson does have a stoic face. I guess the directors finally admit to reshooting some Brie Larson's scenes to add better "reactions" after all that denial.

I thought Brie Larson's acting was terrible in this film. Thankfully the people around her made up for it. If Sam Jackson or Lashana Lynch weren't in this film it would've been bad.

@mastakilla39 - That's some mighty fine reaching there. You're really grasping at straws ;)

@Whaley87 - The movie is still fun to watch because it wasn't really about her. It was more about the adventure, rather than an origin story similar to what Marvel did with ANTMAN & WASP. It's a meaningless fun film.

Unlike Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel lacks character depth. Marvel seems confused on what to do with Captain Marvel? The marketing just kept saying she's a badass but nothing in the film really supports that. It's like spreading a groundless rumor

@mastakilla39 - I wasn’t crazy about the film, but damn there must be lots of straws in the air.

The cameo was very simple but beautiful. The fun part was the kinda 4th wall breaking, rehearsing his lines for Mallrats. Always good to see The Man being part of his universe.

Reading this makes me sad. It was a sweet scene, though.

The ADR(?) overlay was pretty obvious, but I didn't see 'Mall Rats' on the script when I watched... Recognised the line from somewhere though.

Super-stoked for Kevin Smith. Heart warms. Rest in peace Stan.

The Marvel Studios motif they scored this scene with was a really nice touch.

The intro was so simple, yet effective. I was like man, I wish it was kinda more, but once it faded to black and said "Thank You Stan" I was a teary eyed mess. It was beautiful in its simplicity.
