CAPTAIN MARVEL Featurette Reveals The Movie Magic Behind Marvel's Newest Blockbuster

From de-ageing Samuel L. Jackson, to creating the Skrulls, to finding the least worst hairstyles of the '90s, hear from the filmmakers who helped bring Captain Marvel to the big screen and beyond...

Captain Marvel officially took flight this week, blasting into the MCU with rave reviews and a red-hot start at the box office. But getting Carol Danvers to fly higher, further, and faster required some incredible work by some pretty tremendous people in the movie industry.

A newly released IMAX roundtable video takes us behind-the-scenes of Captain Marvel as some of the key filmmakers — including special makeup effects head Shane Mahan, costume designer Sanja Hays, and VFX supervisor Chris Townsend — discuss their role in helping bring Marvel's latest blockbuster to the big screen (and an even bigger screen in the IMAX).

"One of the interesting things we had on this film was youthening Sam Jackson. We had to try and maintain his character and his performance throughout the entire thing, and never let the youthening step in the way of the performance," explained Townsend.

From bringing the Skrulls to life to de-ageing Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, Captain Marvel required some innovation from the visual and special effects departments. That was especially true for the intricate designs of the Skrulls.

"The paint job itself when you look at the Skrulls, it's fairly intricate and it's very design-y. If two make-up artists were doing this paint job, it might have taken two, three, four hours, and I thought the whole entire paint job for the head could just be a tattoo transfer," revealed Legacy Effects Department Head Brian Sipe. "We had to take it to the point where this whole point job happens in 15 minutes just because it was tattoos."

Beyond talking about just bringing Captain Marvel to theaters, the crew also discussed what makes the film so special on the IMAX where fans can experience about 30 minutes of the film in a special aspect ratio that truly transforms the battle sequences and establishing shots.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters and in IMAX.

I have never been so underwhelmed by a reveal in my life.

Was that REALLY how they had Fury lose his eye!!??!???

I mean sure, it was kinda funny and added a whole other layer to Fury's character but STILL...

HOW COULD THEY????

@MaximusTheMad - I was disappointed at first and then later laughed at how Fury must have played that up to be something it was not. His secrets have secrets.

@MaximusTheMad - Can I just say that the way Fury loses his eye was no issue for me and kind of a funny call back to what he does with Coulson's cards in Avengers, but the way the scene was placed in the flow of the film was really rushed and messy?

@Jaspion - Look, it's a fun popcorn movie that is on par with all the other Marvel origin movies. No better or worse. It's not cream of the crop Marvel like the Russos film or the first Avengers but it's far from their worse like the Dark World or the Incredible Hulk.

Just got back, so here my quick review. SPOILERS AHEAD! Stop reading if you wish to not be spoiled.

First off, I thought the film was amazing. To anyone worried the film would be preachy, or have some sort of SJW, feminist, PC, etc, agenda, fear not. Yes, to an extent, and most of it had to do with the period setting, there was some forced sjw-ish stuff in the film, but nothing obnoxious. Again, what little there was made sense, especially due to it being set in the 90's.

The twists, while I saw the Mar-vell and corrupt Kree twist coming, the Skrulls being good guys did sneak up on me and it was a nice surprised. It added a lot of heart to the film and made the film go in a much different direction than I expected. Even though I saw the other two twist coming, they were handled well, so no flack.

My few gripes:

1. Pacing felt a little weird; multiple viewings may fix that though.
2. Some of the jokes fell flat hard(but the good ones were really good).
3. While it didn't contradict the current MCU, this film does raise a few unanswered questions like the Tesseract being Mar-Vell's power source, Ronan's wanting to use CM as a weapon, and Fury's line to Cap about trust and losing his eye. It's minor and they are easy to answer, but this is my gripe section so I added it.
4. While not a big hindrance on the film, Ronan should have not showed up in the final act. I felt his presence was too small to justify it(he should have just stayed in the background), unless it was actual set up for a sequel(in that case, never mind).
5. The score didn't really stick out to me.
6. No explanation for where Goose came from, or what happens to him down the line... Unless I just missed it.

Big positives:

1. The new origin for CM was great.
2. Not every joke worked, but I probably laughed harder in this film than most normal comedies.
3. Her powers looked great. Wasn't all that impressed with how they looked in the trailers, but glad to say the looked great on the big screen.
4. It just made sense. It nicely tied up to the rest of the MCU and gave explanation for things I never needed but am glad we have now.
5. The lack of an actual villain, given that the film was set in the middle of a war, which the lines of good and evil are typically blurred, actually enhanced the film for me. Yes the Kree were "evil" but at no point did I feel Yon Rogg was an actual villain even though he was the closes to being one in the film.
6. This ties a lot into the comedy, but the fish out of water moments were fun and funny. Not only for CM but for the Skrulls and the human characters.
7. Film had a lot of heart.
8. Last but not least, I can look up and relate to Marvel Studios version of CM even though I'm a black man, the exact opposite of her. The film may have meant to inspire young women, which I'm sure it did, but it also inspired me, which goes to show that representation of your race or gender is not necessary to relate to a well written character.

8.5/10

@RextheKing -
3 in gripes. You mean like how Fury bloodied up Coulson's Cap cards to manipulate the Avengers?

6 in gripes. I got the impression Goose was Mar Vell's "pet". I can't remember clearly, but didn't one of the flashbacks with Mar Vell have Goose nearby her legs or something. I think she brought him to Earth when she brought the Skrull refugees. Maybe as protection as both Kree and Skrull alike feared the Flerken.
