The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has revealed some of the ideas that she originally pitched to Marvel Studios, and it sounds like the Captain Marvel sequel could have been a very different movie.
While speaking to Jakes Takes, DaCosta said that she wanted Adam Warlock to be involved before being told that the character was going to be introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The filmmaker also mentions that time-travel would have factored into the story, but doesn't elaborate.
DaCosta was also asked about the "X" lingering on the screen in a recent teaser, and while she doesn't confirm of deny whether this will have any significance on the film, she does express her desire to explore the dynamic between Cyclops and Storm at some point (maybe she'll get her chance once the X-Men make their MCU debut).
Finally, the Candyman director was asked about the recent Variety report and the backlash she faced for starting work on her next project while The Marvels was still in post (this happens frequently). As you might expect, she doesn't let the criticism get to her, and suggests that it's all part of the negativity that seems to be surrounding Marvel Studios in general at the moment.
"By the time I left to start prep on my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was, what we wanted. It really wasn’t this dramatic sort of thing people are thinking it is.”

The Marvels hits theaters on November 10th, with the review embargo lifting on the 8th. Some major spoilers have already begun to do the rounds online, so if you'd rather go in completely fresh, best be wary when navigating social media.

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”
The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.
The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.
