Chris Evans Was Nervous About Captain America: TFA After Seeing The First Trailer

Bit of a rewind here, but while speaking to Chicago's Suntimes about his new movie Puncture Evans reveals that he wasn't quite so confident in Captain America's success as we might have thought..

Nothing in the way of news here but I thought it was interesting that Evans wasn't too confident about Joe Johnston's Captain America: TFA upon viewing the trailer. Something echoed by many here on CBM. Of course his fears proved unnecessary as the movie was a big success, but check out what he has to say to Suntimes..

“The weekend of opening, I was really nervous,” actor Chris Evans says about the superhero movie that changed his life. “It needed to be a hit. Who knows why it’s a hit? There’s no rhyme or reason why something works or not in this business.

“When I saw the first trailer for the film, I thought, ‘It’s not going to work,’ ” he says. “Now, people love it.”

Just goes to show you that even being shot in practically every scene in a movie doesn't always assuage an actor's doubts about what kind of finished product the edit might produce. Notice Evans says "now PEOPLE love it" and not he does. Is it possible he was unhappy with the movie in some way? Doesn't really matter either way, it has made a lot of money both at home and overseas and is by far one of the most popular CBMs we have had so far.

If I was in his shoes... I would've been nervous too.
Best CBM of 2011 IMHO.

I really hope he's talking about the TV Spot. But if not, the first trailer was good enough, of course the 2nd was better...as usual. But the movie turned out good, so he should worry more often lol

the first trailer was awesome, better than the first trailer of Green Lantern anyway :P lol
Movie was great, one of my favorite CBM of all time, as good as the first iron man!
Good find Ror!

Yeah, especially cause people were still telling him to Flame On up until he got off stage from the midnight premiere.

Hah! I totally agree, that first Super Bowl spot did not pump me up about this movie - in fact, it made me downright nervous it'd suck. Really glad it turned out alright -- just wish they'd get more competent people to do a trailer next time around.

I'm sure he was worried, you never know how the non comic book fan movie goers would take character as campy as cap.
A lot of non comic readers i have spoken to find him cheesey and lame. Not to mention most young Americans hate what America stands for.(and they cant give you a good explanation why) but Evens concerns where very understandable. I'm just glad it did well So hollywood keeps the CMB's coming.

there is a rhyme and reason, and Evans trepadation is well documented.

To be honest I wasn't very impressed with the movie but I am glad is was successful.

Jeez laweez. This dudes manager or publicist needs to sit him down and tell him to shut up about his doubting the projects in every interview. He whined about how he wasn't sure of anything with Captain America, he says he "HOPES" Avengers will be awesome and now he's talking about how shocked he is that anyone went to see Captain America. I was getting passed him not being right for Cap but this shit is annoying.

I won't be surprised if he's recast after Avengers.

@TheBlackWidow and MrEko: But you gotta understand too that with how the Fantastic Four films turned out, I dont blame him for being nervous and intially wanting to take the role of another superhero. But I think now that CA:TFA put the spark back. Evans will do just fine from now on

Can you really blame the guy after Fantastic Four? His hesitation makes perfect sense in light of those crap movies. He should be proud of the 360 his career has taken.

@MrEko I think he was feeling the stress thinking the Marvel Movieverse was depending on the Success of Cap. Think about it its not just one film on your shoulders but he has to prove his worth for the Avengers also. Really thr Avengers was riding on Iron man which already proved itself, The Thor movie, and Cap. There was the potential of one domino pulling a Green Lantern fail that could cause the long bet of thenAvengers to fail

@Bastard well a huge amount of mentally handicapped saw first class. Go figure people liking a movie with a strong story and plot taking a fresh approach and making it a genre film in the 60s.

Then of course sometimes the box office is like a voting booth and afterwards you wonder why you voted for a schmuck.

For all those who got all up in arms about who the world doesn't like America anymore and American themes in movies wont sell over seas... Well, there ya go.
And to think Bryan Singer blushed at the thought of Superman representing "the American way" as Donners Sups had. Weird.

I think CATFA did very well for the last release in a summer so crowded with superhero movies. Who knows, maybe if there was less competition saturating the market, it would have reached a little higher.

I just dont think he's really into comic book movies at all. I think he does it for the money and not the glory.
Even in the Fantastic four i got this impression with him, he'd rather be an unkown indie actor i think.
Thats probably why he was so hesitent to do Cap in the first place.

Captain America has no powers, but clearly was the most difficult character to adapt.

I'm in the small demographic who didn't enjoy this film but i'm not going to come here and bash it as people like different things take my friends girlfriend he thinks she's beautiful i think she looks like vigo from ghostbusters 2. Saying that though i'm glad it done well as i like the character and hopefully when they make a sequel i will connect more with it!!

@eatmyhit

I haven't logged into my account or commented on anything in probably 8 or 9 months (even though i read the articles/comments daily here), but I only wanted to comment on you not being a douche. Seems a lot of people just want to bash a movie when they don't connect or talk about it being the worst thing ever

So thanks for being mature/intelligent :D
