This June sees the release of
Spider-Men, a series by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli which celebrates Spider-Man's 50th Anniversary with the first meeting of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Talking to
Newsarama, Bendis confirmed that we should expect plenty of other characters from the Ultimate Universe to run into the 616 version of Spidey.
"Ultimate Aunt May and Ultimate Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy and Nick Fury are all involved in the story as well, so there are lot of extremely emotional moments that are going to happen that are almost surreal, but I think very cathartic. I think issue #4 was when Sara emailed me and said, "Alright, I cried. You got me."
"Nick Fury had a lot going on with Ultimate Peter, and his connection to Miles, and what the right thing to do here is," he adds.
"Every one of these characters has deep, emotional investment into the Spider-Man mythos, some of them suffering quite a lot, and there may be room here for some catharsis that lets them move forward in a positive way. What is it like for a character like Gwen Stacy to find out there's another universe out there with another Gwen Stacy?" Who causes this crossover to take place? Well, as you may have already heard, the villain of
Spider-Men is Mysterio. However, the writer was reluctant to divulge too much about his role in the series, but promises answers early on.
"You will find out all of what's going on with Mysterio, and how this is connected to the Ultimate Universe, in the very first issue. We give that up right away, because there's so much else to get to. You will see what Mysterio has done and how he's done it, and for long-time readers, they'll be very excited; if you don't know a damn thing about Mysterio, you'll know exactly what's going on."
The story will have ramifications for both Spider-Men, although as a visitor to the Ultimate Universe, it's Peter who may be left most shocked by what he experiences.
[He] gets to really see what the world would be like if he makes the ultimate sacrifice, and it's quite an eye-opener. I think it's going to be one of those books you're going to have to read a couple of times, because you'll be looking at it from Peter's point of view, and then you'll be reading it from Miles' point of view, and all these other characters."
