COMICS: Grant Morrison On AVENGERS VS. X-MEN: "That Ain't My Scott Summers"

Grant Morrison, writer of New X-Men, has shared his thoughts on the way in which the fall of Scott Summers/Cyclops was handled in Avengers Vs. X-Men, and like most fans, he's not a fan of the direction that Marvel have taken the character in.

While writers like Joss Whedon and Kieron Gillen have spent the last few years fleshing out Cyclops, it should also be remembered that Grant Morrison arguably kicked off that trend with his run on New X-Men. It was in that series that we saw Scott Summers really come into his own, leading a team of X-Men and even ending his relationship with Jean Grey in order to hook up with Emma Frost (a character that he has been in a relationship with ever since). It's understandable then that Morrison isn't best pleased with how Cyclops was handled in Avengers Vs. X-Men. Many thanks to Comic Book Resources for the following excerpt from a panel at this year's New York Comic Con.

[I haven't] actually seen it. I read about it online. That ain't my Scott Summers. That ain't my guy. The guys working on those characters are trying something new, trying to push the story and I'm fine with it but I didn't recognize him and I don't think he'd do any of those things. Maybe he's been possessed -- he's always getting possessed, that guy. Maybe he likes it."

So, he's not exactly as fuming as the majority of Cyclops fans, but he's clearly not loving the fact that the character was arguably handled VERY poorly in the series which wrapped up two weeks ago. More comments from Morrison can be found by clicking the link below, including the fact that he doesn't like the current iteration of 'Animal Man' being tied into the Red and his plans for the return of the villainous 'Dr. Hurt' in Batman Incorporated. What do you make of what he has to say above? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Am i the only person on this site who actually likes Grant's work and doesn't constantly bitch about it *cough* steverogersson *cough*. I liked his work on New X-Men, JLA, and his run on Batman. The dude's one of my favorite comic writers (along with Brian Michael Bendis.

After Morrison is done with Dc, he could come back to Marvel and write the Cyclops he wanted, and make what happened to him 'possessed', ...

Look at Professor X, he became Onslaught back in the 90s, and got almost all of Marvel heroes sent off into that Heroes Reborn stunt/promo/outsourcing/event. Prof X became evil because he accidently absorbed Magneto's evil essence in a weird mind zap, ...and then the heroes returned, forgave Prof and went along, ....

Grant Morrison made Cyclops relevant again for the first time since the original Pheonix saga; having said that, I felt that Morrison's take on him in New X-Men laid the groundwork for this iteration of Cyclops (adding in more depth, pathos and moral ambiguity). Morrison also helped make Cyclops my favorite mutant, and I love that his horizons have been broadened.

Completely agree with him. Didn't like how he was in AvX either. At first he seemed ok, but then later he turned out to be a complete villain. Even more of a villain than Stark was in Civil War. The difference between AvX and Civil War is that on Civil War you could see how you could be on either side. AvX it basically said, "The X-men are dumb but the Avengers are awesome." Horribly played Marvel. You better make up for your mistakes recently with Marvel Now...

Morrison's brilliant, it's just that there's often (not always, but often) something a bit off about his pacing or storytelling. One doesn't always "get" a Morrison story on first reading, and it may seem as if it doesn't make sense. Usually it does make perfect sense on second or third reading. Contrasting with Alan Moore, you always "get" the story on the first reading - somehow he's a bit better of a storyteller, the plot points are more salient above the ideas, whereas with Morrison, one's so captivated by the rush of ideas that one may miss some plot points on the first reading.

Haha right HalloweenJack. He WAS the one who made him into a brooding toolbag who cheated on the love of his life with a woman not up to her caliber. More appropriately Morrision put Cyclops on the path but the morons who wrote this story just took him way farther down it than Morrison intended.

Still, I do agree with him on this. While I dont like what Morrison did with Cyclops he DID give him personality for a change so Ill give him that. What AvX and Marvel in general has been doing with Cyclops is downright terrible.

If you haven't read it then you can't have an opinion on it. Having read all 12 issues and being a long time Xmen reader, I believe Scott has been becoming more desperate over the years since Scarlet Witch uttered, "No more mutants." Enter the solution in Hope and the power of the Phoenix and its logical that those choices would be made.

What happened to the "Shawn Ashmore returning as Iceman?" story? Has that story been debunked?

He just wanted to rebirth his kind, because nor Avengers, nor any other superhero team doesn't care for it, and he did it. And Xavier did nothing, but only "dreamed".

I actually liked Morrison's mind and sense shattered Cyclops after Apocalypse possession, but I liked him before, like in first "Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix", and later, "Astonishing X-Men", for example.

So far his only stories I didn't like were Kill Your Boyfriend and his Marvel one-shot about Nick Fury (it felt a bit like an overlong Chuck Norris fact).

Morrison is my favorite writer and his New X-Men DEFINED the X-Men for me - he made them more teachers with crazy abilities than super heroes, challenged the 'world' the X-Men lived in, made them vibrant and deep characters, valuing story over the next fight or epic battle. New X-Men and Uncanny X-Force are the two Marvel titles I've enjoyed the most.

@MovieTheater true but during and after civil war everyone was treating iron man like a complete asshole even though he was doing the right thing. In civil war the public votes for superhero registration which I think makes iron man have a good reason for pro reg captain America acts like a total prick in civil war and to an extent AVX but not as bad I think cyclops had a good reason to say no to cap he's trying to protect his people before the whole Phoenix thing came in
