When was the last time you remember Brian Michael Bendis or Dan Slott writing a
Deadpool comic book? How about seeing the likes of John Romita Jr., Oliver Coipel or Steve Epting on art duties? Well, that's the point that the character's creator, Rob Liefeld, brought up on Twitter yesterday (and it didn't go down particularly well). It's worth noting that Liefeld did apologise for his initial comments, acknowledging that his use of the words, "D-List," may have been a poor choice. Here are a selection of the Tweets which caused the controversy.
While Lifeld's comments may seem a little harsh, he has a point. After a week of new creative team announcements for the Marvel NOW! status quo which included the likes of Jason Aaron and Mark Waid, the reigns of
Deadpool are being handed over to comedian Brian Posehn and G4's Gerry Duggan. Neither have a great deal of experience writing comic books, although they have been teamed with a fairly prominent artist in the form of
The Walking Dead and
Venom's, Tony Moore. While there's absolutely nothing wrong with this creative team (as someone who hasn't loved Daniel Way's take on the character, I for one can't wait to see what they come up with) it's a valid question why exactly no "A-List" talent ever seems to be assigned to the title. Regardless, Twitter did not react too kindly to Liefeld's remarks, and Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso,
Uncanny X-Force writer Rick Remender and cover artist Dave Johnson all chimed in with their thoughts.
