I have to give it to Slott on this. He could really write a good Spider-Man when he wants to. This issue is the final part of this two-part arc. It's complete filler, buying time for Ends of Earth. Really, I doubt this mini-arc will be ever mentioned again. Not to say it isn't a good story, cause it is. It's taking a break from outside influences such as the Avengers to tell a story completely Spidey-centric. It's also one of the better Spidey comics I've read in awhile.
The story continues with Spidey attempting to stop New York from blowing up.
Since Slott took over with Big Time, the series has been mixed. I really likeed the beginning of Big Time, but things like Spider-Island really hold the series back. I've come to accept this way of Spidey comics. Spidey has been turned backward, and given an undertone of immaturity. (The Avengers Academy consider him a 'friend' rather than a 'mentor.') Thankfully, this arc has been the closest in bringing Spider-Man back to his glory days. I actually enjoyed reading his words, the writing is some of the best in awhile.
Speaking of the writing, you know Grady from this story? He was pretty horribly written near the beginning of the issue, it was almost unbearable and truly forced. After that scene, he's fine. One of the best scenes was when Peter and Mj sat down for pie and coffee. The writing here is very, very good. It actually *SHOCK* sounds like something out of the late 80's era. I wonder, will they get back together? Slott is doing a good job with making you think of whether it's going to happen or not. And I hope you're not a Flag Smasher fan, because he's pretty lame in this issue.
Humberto Ramos is at his finest with this this issue. I use to not be a fan of his work, but his art was very good in the issue. Spidey looked great. The cover is dynamic, different, I like it.
Overall, a pretty impressive issue, and this is coming from someone who hasn't been too fond of the series. It features very good writing, (aside from Grady) and it's fun. It's filler, but it's fun. Hopefully the series will remain like this, good writing, good art, and solid, yet fun storytelling.
8/10.
