Musicians Protest Marvel's Method of Scoring Movies

"Captain Un-America." Armed with various drums, signs and a rubber rat with "Marvel Studios" scribbled on its belly, the musicians protested at the film's Cleveland location along E. 6th Street and St. Clair early Thursday afternoon. Hit the jump for details...

As crews were working to film an action sequence for Marvel's upcoming blockbuster "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" nearby, protestors banged loudly on their drums trying to gain attention for their cause. The group, based out of California, alleges that Marvel Studios is taking millions in tax credits and then exporting U.S. jobs for the movie's musical score.
According to a pamphlet that the group was passing out, they accuse Marvel of hiring foreign musicians in Europe and paying them "under the table and on the cheap, robbing U.S. musicians of their jobs."

I seen a guy in a suit before that was the same rat! He was standing in front of Wal mart with a bunch of other protesters. They apparently like to waste their time.

Europe does the same thing with American musicians. Its a digital age, everything gets recorded and sent from anywhere in the world. I did an album where all of us never even saw each other the whole 6 month layout.

I have this rare psychological condition when I'm unable to feel entitlement. That feeling of "I deserve more" is completely alien to me. Therefore, because I can't relate, every time I see protesters or complainers all I see is a bunch of whiners.

Rationaly, I understand their rights and outrage, but emotionaly I can't feel sympathy for any of them.

It's kind of weird being me.

If your an American based company or studio or whatever, you should ALWAYS look to your fellow countryman to provide products & service.

However,it the products and/or service is not to the standards your wanting, feel free to look elsewhere.
If your just looking to save some money..you should be ashamed.

Sorry to be the bearer of truth but Europe does have much better orchestras for soundtracks etc. The likes of the Prague Philharmonic have been used for film scores and music for games for years.

They do propbably come cheaper but the real deal clincher is that they are very, very good.

John Williams original scores for Star Wars, Superman and Indiana Jones were all recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, who don't come cheap.

Composers go to these guys because they are very simply the best in the world.

@defuse19089 actually European governments take large steps to subsidize their arts, specifically touring bands from Europe are viewed as cultural ambassadors and have a large part of the bill subsidized by the state. If anything American musicians tend to be the least entitled on the planet.

This isn't news, Marvel Studios doesn't give two fL|cks about the musical scores for their films.

The guy in the first image can't even spell "musicians" right, and yet you expect Marvel to use American musicians? Move along, hippie!

American "Musians" need all the help they can get. Especially schooling so that they can learn to spell.

Hmmm.....are the tax breaks related to the score? Are there amendments stating that they have to hire American musicians? No? Then what does it matter? This is a non-issue. They may not like that Marvel is hiring oversea orchestras to score their film but that is a choice that they're allowed to make. "Robbing U.S. musicians of jobs"?!!? If this group is hoping to secure jobs for themselves based on their protest, then I don't blame Marvel. I wouldn't want a movie score made with bongos, snares, and steel drums either!

other than that Rahman dude who did the first Iron Man, i don't really know who's not American. Is Alan Silvestri British??

but, seriously..as much as i like Marvel's flicks, i gotta ask: WTF's the whole point in getting BOUGHT by DIS-friggin-NEY, if they're gonna keep being CHEAP..?? after the purchase, shouldn't they have more money now?? SPEND it?? you'll be makin LOTS more anyway...

LOL

Marvel has Disney. If they gave two shits about their soundtracks, they have their pick of the academy-award winning composers the Mouse House has on their beck and call. These blokes sure as hell wouldn't get the gig. Talk about a [frick]ing non-issue.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.(...or play the steel drum, because you hear a lot of steel drums in blockbusters)
