UPDATE: Wolverine To Be Headmaster Of "Jean Grey School For Higher Learning"!

Courtesy of the Associated Press' Matt Moore, we have a full report on Wolverine's post "Schism" plans, including the controversial name of his new school in Westchester and many more details from writer Jason Aaron...

No, Jean Grey hasn't returned from the dead! Instead, it looks as if Wolverine will be paying his respects to his former love (and wife of Cyclops!) by naming the rebuilt X-Mansion after her. The following article is doing the rounds courtesy of Matt Moore over at the Associated Press, and it sheds a lot of new light on what we can expect from Wolverine & The X-Men after the fallout of "Schism".

In finding a new teacher to replace the X-Men's venerated Professor X, writer Jason Aaron has found a not so suitable substitute that's bound to have readers of Marvel Comics' upcoming "Wolverine & the X-Men" series doing a double take.

Or even a triple take, given that the new headmaster has three razor-sharp claws that "snikkt!" from both his hands at the mere hint of danger.

Wolverine is heading up the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning that will not only educate young mutants, but hone their powers, too. He's being helped by Kitty Pryde, Iceman and Beast, among others.

"We're getting to see Wolverine in a position we've never seen him in before," Aaron said, noting that Wolverine has always been one more prone to violence and fisticuffs first than asking questions.

"We're certainly a little bit uncomfortable, but I think it still makes sense with the way things have been going in the X-universe."

And what's been going on has not been pretty after Wolverine saw his tenuous partnership and shaky friendship with longtime X-Men leader Cyclops shattered in the recent five-issue "X-Men: Schism" that Aaron wrote.

The two have had bad blood between them for decades. The fact that they both loved Jean Grey, the original Marvel Girl who went onto become the omnipotent Phoenix, only added to that simmering resentment and mistrust which boiled over this summer.

The rift created in that story was so profound that Marvel halted "The Uncanny X-Men" with issue 544, opting to replace it with "Wolverine & The X-Men" next month along with "Uncanny X-Men" in November.

Nick Lowe, who edited the previous series and Marvel's current X-Men titles, said the logic of dividing the teams will become apparent as both series get under way.

"Wolverine certainly has unorthodox ideas," said Lowe. "The name of the school, for one. He's the one who named it and I can't imagine Cyclops will be happy when he learns."

And Wolverine? Well let's just say that while Charles Xavier makes an appearance in the first issue, his calm demeanor is not the foundation for how Wolverine will operate.

"I hadn't planned on Professor X showing up," Aaron said. "But once I started working on the issue, I felt that he had to show up. I had to have a passing of the torch."

That's evident in the look of the first few pages, which pays homage to the first issue of "The X-Men" that came out in 1963, but Xavier's school is history and Wolverine's school is more advanced, populated by a cast of familiar and new mutants.

"It's very much a book about this school and Wolverine trying to build something new from the ashes of the old school," Aaron said, adding that Professor X won't be a recurring guest star. "Wolverine is leading the show. Not Wolverine with Professor X looking over his shoulder."

Lowe said the book will also give readers a new vantage point of the complex character that Wolverine has always been.

"But Wolverine has a lot of ideas of what worked and didn't work at the old school and he put people in positions of responsibility to really challenge the old model and make something new," he said.

"Another thing you learn about Wolverine is that he's not a micro-manager," he said.

I guess I never read a lot of X-Men comic books and only watched some of the cartoons and seen the movies, but what has caused Professor X to take a back seat to running the school? It just seems weird to me. I guess when I think X-Men I instantly think of a team of mutants brought together by Xavier that operates out of his academy...oh well. Guess things change.

@Dr. Fate- Avengers wages are high I would hope. And they do indeed get wages. Remember the whole thing when Luke's New Avengers started up and Spidey suddenly realised he wouldnt be getting paid since he wasnt going to reveal his identity. So thats one possible explanation. If you're on both Avengers teams do you get two wages???

Wolverine can't run a school if he's constantly going on solo missions like in his, oh, TWO other books. Isn't he currently Mind Numb with grief in Canada taking on the bitch role in a pack of wolves? How can I take this seriously? Naming the school after a girl who not only DIDNT choose you, but only lusted you at best? come on, where's your dignity Wolvie? I just finished #46 of your first series, what happened to you?

Well saw that common wolverine has became so popular that xmen is more about him then professor X .So the've turn Prop X and Cyclops to harsh leaders and less symphatic characters. Don't get me wrong I like Logan but they have made it so easy for Wolverine ..It also makes it easier when Jean does comes back for Wolvie to finally get the woman he always wanted the characters are all different now

What bad decisions? He has single-handedly preserved what's left of the mutant race, brought together almost every remaining mutant, and owns them on a daily basis. What decisions has Wolverine made that are so good? He doesn't even show up to teach his own damn classes yet he decides to start a school? FAIL.

Damn, I bet people don't cut classes with wolverine as dean/principal. Besides how can he ru. A school and be in 10 other comics at the same time. I guess his regen ability makes it so he doesnt have to sleep

Even if Jean didn't love Logan. She did care about him. Scott said what he said out of anger. Which is why when Logan retorted Scott got more angry because what Logan said was truth. Scott has become Magneto and she would be afraid of him. This whole scenario seems interesting we know the backstory. Its not like Xavier and Eric. It was mentioned they worked together but Logan and Scott we know their past because we've been reading it. I still don't like the art. I think if someone else was drawing it would be way better. but this storyline is real good. And naming the school after Jean is cool to if you know her character. Jean was a very caring person besides her other personality which did not care for life at all. How Ironic.......

Does Wolverine have to be in everything? and be leader of everything?

I know he's the "face" of mutants it seems...

but nobody can be everywhere at once... unless he's cloned. (let's not open THAT can of worms.)

But Matches, We're on the brink of war between Team Cyclops and Team Wolverine. Our people need a sense of continuity in order to feel safe in these difficult times. All of us must stand together. For the good of X-Men.

To be in multiple books is one thing. Ok, sure, he fought this guy with the Avengers on Monday, this group with X-Force on Tuesday, Solo action Wednesday, The Best There Is Thursday, Uncanny Friday, X-Men on Saturday, etc.

But completely different characters in separate books? Come on! Have you read Wolverine? He has exiled himself in Canada, is an omega male in a wolf pack, and is completely out of it. Yet he's kicking ass and taking names in San Francisco.

It's interesting that Iceman and Beast went with Team Wolverine, pretty much dividing the original X-Men lineup in half. And besides, there's probably going to come a point where Cyclops and Wolverine have a rematch.....only it'll be against the Avengers, due to Logan's wanting to keep the kids out of harms way.Anyone notice Scott's in another love triangle now, with him,the White Queen, and Namor? The more things change,etc.....

@ Scurvydog

Yeah, I can't imagine Namor taking emma from scott. I can't imagine them doing that to Cyclops again (lack of originality) unless it was part of a story line where Cyclops loses control of utopia and everything he's worked for (completely, not half-way like is Schism) and her leaving him was like the final straw before a mental breakdown. Or unless they're clearing up his schedule for Jean Grey to return.

You don't know the timeline. Your still looking at with a rational mind. Just enjoy the story. I just like to read comics. I don't look into these stories to much. takes the fun out of reading them. I just read them to read good stories which is why I read Dc Marvel ,The Walking Dead, and G.I Joe. Good stories. Thats what its about....

Agreed, and I do try, but like I said, it's just when they go to such extremes like they are with Wolvie in his own comic. I hasn't killed the enjoyment, just gets a bit strange I guess.
