JLA/AVENGERS Reprint Finally Coming This March To Honor Legendary Artist George Pérez

It's been announced that Kurt Busiek and George Pérez's classic JLA/Avengers story is being reprinted by The Hero Initiative after the legendary artist recently revealed he's battling terminal cancer.

The Hero Initiative has announced today that, for the first time in decades, the critically acclaimed JLA/Avengers crossover is being reprinted. The charity is dedicated to helping comic book creators who are in medical or financial need, and this news comes shortly after we learned that legendary artist George Pérez had been diagnosed with stage III pancreatic cancer.

Only 7000 copies are being printed, with Hero Initiative honouring one of Pérez's seminal bodies of work and his long-time support of Hero. The 228-page paperback features the original 2003 four-issue co-publishing venture between DC Comics and Marvel, written by Kurt Busiek with art by Pérez.

The collection will also feature 64 pages of companion content and will reprint introductions by original Avengers writer/editor Stan Lee and Justice League of America editor Julius Schwartz. A bonus in the Hero Initiative edition is a new afterword by Busiek. Pérez is a founding member of Hero Initiative’s board of directors and has served as chair of its Disbursement Committee.

Pérez is, of course, also known for his phenomenal work on titles like The New Teen Titans, Fantastic Four, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Infinity Gauntlet.

For those of you who haven't read the series, it's definitely worth checking out, as the story features iconic moments like Captain America squaring off with Batman, The Flash racing Quicksilver, and Superman wielding Mjolnir. We won't say any more, but this is a classic and you can see the cover below!

wolfman and perez might be the best creative team at either company

@dracula - That’s a hard sell but I would put them in a top 10 list and I would have a hard time putting in any order. It would include Danny O’Neil and Neal Adams, preferably with Giordano’s inks, Chris Claremont and any number of different artists that worked on X-Men with him, Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers and Terry Austin even though it was a short collaboration time and even though a lot of Stan Lee’s dialogue is cringey bu today’s standards (melodramatic IMHO), the creative output of Lee and Kirby is just amazing. I never really cared for Kirby’s artwork, either but his creativity was amazing. There are probably a lot of other teams that I can’t think of at the moment but those certainly come to mind. I would definitely include Wolfman and Perez, don’t get me wrong.

The data of crossovers between Marvel may as well be forever gone sadly but it's good to know things like this can happen for the Right reasons

Near the end there's a scene where Superman suggests Captain America be in charge of both teams and it honestly puts a tear in my eye. It's maybe three panels long but it just feels right.

I read half of this crossover growing up and could never find the first half. I would love to get my hands on this finally after all these years.

I thought the news was he had passed, but I'm glad that's not the case, at least not yet. I hope George is not suffering greatly. When i was in jr high i very much looked forward to each monthly issue of NTT. Great art, great stories. I had the privilege of meeting George at a Con ~ 10 years ago. He signed my original owner copy of NTT 1.

First comic I ever read was Avengers 144. He then became my favorite artist. Had the pleasure of meeting him 3 times. 2 comic cons and once at my local comic shop. Very nice and friendly person. News of his illness is very sad.

Probably the only thing that stuck with me from this crossover.

The irony is that I believe this came out before Bucky and Jason came back to life.

Was this crossover better than the other marvel/ DC crossover where hulk fought Superman and Batman fought captain America?
