Okay, So Are We Over Saturated Yet?

Once again another article about over saturation, But with about 40 Superhero movies coming out over the next six years, there may be such a thing.

Over the past few years, I've been coming to this site in awe of the greatest genre of movies in our lifetime, superhero movies!  I love every part of the stories unfolding, the twists, the turns, the villains and the heroes.  I come to this website every time I use my smartphone.  I do this all in the hope that I can be amazed by all of the awesome comic book and superhero news i can possibly learn.  I love this stuff. Since the early days of the superhero genre, there have been some big duds that i figured would stop the upcoming movies in their tracks, leaving me with an empty spot in my life where these movies stay.  A few have been so bad that they did just that.  Green lantern in 2011 and Xmen Origins Wolverine in 2009, especially Spiderman 3 in 2007 (which actually almost ended the Spiderman movies from then on, which ironically rebooted the franchise, which even more ironically may end the Spiderman franchise due to The Amazing Spiderman 2).

Those days, for the most part, seem to be a distant memory for many of us.  The quality of the movies seems to be getting better and the studios have figured out a formula to use in order to introduce and continue even the weirdest of superhero franchises (Guardians of the Galaxy).  This is truly the greatest time to be a comic book movie fan, but my fear is that this may all be crashing down around us in the near future.

  • Before you discredit me as a none believer you really must understand that i live, eat, sleep, and breathe for these movies and its basically all i ever talk about with my close group of friends.
The sad but realistic truth is that these movies, how they are made, how many of them there are, and the people that are fans of these movies will all drastically reduce over the next 10 years.  Why? Because of the shear volume of movies being released.

  • My argument is not over the quality of these movies but in the volume they are released.  Many will, out of love for these characters, deny this fact because they just don't want to believe this can be true.
I don't think that having different sub-genres will fix this situation either.  My opinion is that the majority of the public will get tired of these movies.  Why?
  • They are all Superheroes movies.  There is no way around this fact.  This is not The road to Perdition or V for Vendetta.  These are super powered people that wear costumes and fight badguys.
  • Sub-genres wont save these movies because while they all may have different stories, characters, plot twists, and environments,  because no matter how you slice it, they are all Superheroes.  Dr. Strange is the same as Iron Man and Superman is the same as Guardians in this argument.
  • There are 4 huge studios that think their properties are more important than the other studios properties.  This argument is mainly directed at Marvel Studios Vs Warner Brothers because they are the ones releasing the majority of the movies over the next 6 years.  We are getting 3 movies from Marvel Studios a year (that are announced, maybe more), at least 2 Warner Brothers movies a year, and a hand full of other movies from Fox and Sony ALL AT THE SAME TIME! And keep in mind, those are just the movies we already know about.

With all these movies coming out, you might make the argument that people will go see them no matter what.  You may say, "It doesn't matter that there are on average 7 Superhero movies a year coming out each year for the next few years, it just matters if they are good."  But there is nothing to compare this to!  The truth is, movies have really never been this connected before and the amount of Superhero movies has never been so high.  No other Genre of movie has even attempted to do something like this in the history of film, which makes it exciting.  But it comes at a cost to the fans.

Eventually,  I believe, the public opinion for these movies will suffer do to too much of a good thing.  Everyone loves these movies now, even critics, but when does the whole connected superhero movie thing lose its shine?  Could it be because now there are 2 major studios with interconnected movies, that seem very similar to the public (Batman v Superman/ Iron man V Captain America) or a step further (Avengers V Justice League).

There are now going to be 4 Avengers movies and at least 2 Justice League movies, and thats just whats been announced.  Just to put things in perspective, here is a list of possible and confirmed movies until 2020 that I found on ScreenRant, check it out!

Not all of these movies will be good, some of them may even be horrible.  Too be honest, this is the first year in a few years that ever Superhero movie that has come out was considered by the majority to be "good".  The way I see it, this over saturation is already here as sad as it sounds.  I didn't even mention all of the incredibly mediocre Television shows that have or will be coming out over the next few years.  All of this accumulates to what we all fear, and most of us will deny, that this ship is already sinking and only the strong will survive!

Who knows, in 2021 there could be 10 incredible Superhero movies coming out that year and the genre could still be thriving, but thats a very unlikely outcome.  Hell, 10 years ago we all thought flip phones were the best thing in the world, now no one really cares about your Razor (or they laugh at you for having such an outdated phone)

Thank you guys for reading this.  I'm sure most of you will disagree, hell I'm sure most of you wont even read the whole thing and still spew some hate.

We are perfectly saturated, if that makes sense.

I don't think you should apologize or defend yourself for thinking that we might be reaching the point of over-saturation. That's a perfectly reasonable thing to be worried about. That said, I completely disagree. I'll reiterate a comment that I left on a different site about this very same topic...which came about because Robert Downey Jr recently said that the superhero genre is getting "old":

Saying there's "too many superhero movies" is really odd to me. I mean, it's not like it is its own genre. Marvel has proven that superhero movies can exist in MANY different genres: technological thrillers, action-adventure, comedy, espionage thriller, straight-up sci/fi fantasy, family-friendly team-up films, etc etc etc. That's how you keep things fresh, original, and able to stand apart from each other.

Now if anyone wants to say that there's too many crappy "horror" movies, or too many awful Adam Sandler/Kevin James comedies, or too many "turn-off-your-brain" action slugfests with nothing else going for them...then I'm all ears. But too many superhero movies? That's debatable.

@SauronsBANE

I agree. The horror genre especially needs to get it's shit together, seriously.

Remember what it was like before superhero movies? I don't want to go back to that anytime soon.

@Dingbat Haha amen to that! It really seems like we're in the golden age of this stuff right now...we should just sit back and enjoy it while it lasts!

As long as Marvel keeps doing their thing, WB/DC hits the ground running with their growing universe, Fox continues the great story of the new younger mutants, and Sony completely stops making Spider-Man movies forever, then we're in good hands!

@SauronsBANE

True dat. I was kinda hoping the end of DOFP would signal a rebirth of the original X-Men but that dream was crushed. First Class was still amazing though so I have no problem with the young cast getting featured more.

DC better not [frick] this up. DC comics is my shit.

I think the closest we can come is the heyday of the Western's in the 50's. There were over 200 Western Genre films in the 50's and at least 50-75 were big popular pictures. Western's were also all over TV during this period. Eventually the general public soured on them for big tent-pole type films except for the very best. It took till the late 80's and 90's with hits such as Young Guns and Unforgiven for them to make strong comeback and now they are on the upswing. I see this trend probably being about the same for Comic-book movies.

May 5, 2017 – Unannounced Marvel Movie

wouldn't that be a punch in the balls to dc if marvel announce a ms.marvel movie for that slot.

The quality of CBMs is going to suffer. You can expect to have 7+ of these every year and have them all be great.

These movies will get stupider, dumber, more bland and more boring, and then superheroes will slowly fade away.

But that's not happening soon.

I could have sworn Dr. Strange was officially announced for that date.

Eh, it's like any other genre or even sub-genre for me. There will be some I don't get interested in, but bring all the good ones you can. I will never mind a glut of movies I enjoy.

The cowboy genre was far more omnipresent in its hayday than superheroes are now, and that era lasted much longer than this recent superhero fad.

Comicbook films are blowing up because we are just now getting the special effects capability to render live action versions of things that were only previously depicted in comicbooks. Add to that the coming of age of all of the kids from the silver age (by which I mean they have kids of their own and are perfectly geared toward nostalgia). It's a perfect storm and in a decade or more it will probably fade, but that's a long way away.

As other people are saying, sports are everywhere and their existence doesn't take anything away from people who don't like them. Superhero movies are the same (right now).

Also, I just noticed that May/July date for Marvel in 2018. Damn, that looks like a two-part Avengers to me...

I've worked in the movie and game rental business for the past 12 years and CBMs are at the bottom of the saturation bucket. The amount of BS disaster movies, something vs something action movies eg aeroplane vs volcano, rom-coms, found footage horror movies, general shoot em up flicks, medieval era movies, rip offs, remakes, spoofs and rip off of spoofs far out number the CBMs.

hell even low budget drama movies out number cbms
