James Gunn Seemingly Addresses A Potential Exit From DC Studios Following WBD Sale Announcement

After years of speculation, it's been revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery is officially for sale. Now, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has seemingly addressed his future at the company.

Ever since Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, Inc., rumors have run rampant about a potential sale of the storied Hollywood company. The rumors started gaining traction when it was revealed that Paramount Global had submitted an offer to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery (an offer that was ultimately rejected). Soon after, sale intentions were confirmed by WBD’s board of directors.

For some, talks of a sale put into question the future of DC Studios, specifically that of co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. People wondered whether a sale would mean the executives would be forced to leave their roles, or if they’d be allowed to stay on and continue with their plans for the DC brand. Now, it appears (emphasis on "appears") James Gunn has addressed the possibility of him exiting his role in the future.

During an interview with the BobaTalks YouTube channel, Gunn was asked whether the plot threads being established in projects like Peacemaker Season 2 and Lanterns would run until the release of Man of Tomorrow in 2027, or if they'd go further than that, into future projects. Gunn replied:

"If I s-- Yes, they definitely go significantly further than Man of Tomorrow. So, now, whether or not that'll be me that's able to fulfill that promise [laughs] depends on a lot of things in life, but yeah."

On the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit, Gunn's response sparked speculation that he was trying to say "If I stay," before stopping himself. That, however, is not confirmed.

It’s worth mentioning that Gunn may not necessarily be talking about WBD’s potential sale. He could, after all, simply be commenting on the ever-changing nature of the entertainment industry. That is important to stress. James Gunn did not, in any way, say he was leaving DC Studios during this interview. From what can be interpreted from his comments, he simply alluded to the possibility of not staying on at the company, and that could be for any number of reasons that don't necessarily have to do with WBD's current situation.

Now, in the case that he was alluding to what is happening at WBD, some may wonder why Gunn may have addressed an uncertain future for himself when nothing's set in stone. To answer that possibility, it’s important to consider the culture inside a company when significant changes are in the horizon. As bystanders, we see everything from the outside, and can only go from the little pieces of information that are often strategically released by the parties involved. The people working inside the company, on the other hand, usually have a good (or at least somewhat coherent) idea of what might be in store when big shifts are in store. That is particularly true for someone in such a high position of power as Gunn. As such, it makes sense that he'd be aware of any potential risks to his position should WBD end up being sold.

Fans may be quick to position the possibility of changes at DC Studios as a negative stance on the future of the DCU, but this is simply a matter of corporate reality. When a company is sold, its new owners typically make drastic changes to its structure, and that often means introducing their own team of people, phasing out those from the previous regime. Putting excitement or hopes for the future of the DCU aside, realisitically speaking, Warner Bros. Discovery being sold does introduce the possibility of James Gunn and Peter Safran exiting their roles.

As for how likely that is, it's too early to speculate when there isn't even a firm offer in place for the company. For all we know, DC Studios will continue on as always when the time comes. All we can do at the moment is wait and see what comes next for Warner Bro. Discovery and DC Studios.

What do you think about James Gunn's comments? Do you think he and Peter Safran will stay on at DC Studios if WBD is sold? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

@TheVandalore - ah, another article taken out of context and assuming shit. He isn't going anywhere, he has talked about wanting to take a break from doing so many projects. He could do Feiges job better than him anyway. The Last time I checked, one of them only signs checks and has zero creativity.

@bobevanz - Feige worked on most Marvel movies since X-Men in 2000. He worked under Donner and Arad. He created the cinematic universe that gave birth to CBM boom and multple cinematic universes being thrown in movie space, like the ones in horror, comedy, DC and yada yada. He is the one who put Gunn on the map. Don't diss a person cause of external forces beyond his control or making a few mistakes after doing a lot of things right. Even Einstein has been proven to be wrong. No one can be right all the time.

@SpiderParker - I dont disagree but id argue that Zack Snyder put Gunn on the map. Not Feige.

If he grunts out more crap like Peacemaker season 2, he deserves to get sacked.

@DocSpock - This and this again times a million. I really believe he doesn't understand comic books thus not being able to realise a version for film. Peacemaker 2 (and in many respects season 1) was a total waste of screen time, the actors time (there is no way that many of those actors actually believe in their heart of hearts that season 2 is anything to be proud of other than being satisfied with the pay check), the studio's $$ AND my time.

if you have to do an entire paragraph to address the clickbait headline, then maybe ya shouldn't have used the clickbait headline.

Yeahhhh - I have mixed feelings on it tbh. On one hand, it’s nice to see someone who understands comics more than the average studio head, but on the other hand he makes cringe shit sometimes with his writing (specifically his awful juvenile humor) so idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gunn dissed the people who loved Henry Cavill...HALF the fan base...then his movies & shows can't attract the casual fan cuz his stories & costumes suck. He NEVER made DC any profit from , Suicide Squad, Flash, Blue Beetle, his corny monster cartoon, Peacemaker & Superman. NOBODY wants his vision except for his SMALL FAN BASE. NUMBERS DONT LIE! Zack will be back to do some ELSE WORLDS DC is som capacity & those who hate on him will pee their pants😂😂😂😂 We told y'all WALLETS CLOSED!!!

funny, WB is thinking of selling the company and all we want is no more james gunn dcu movies.

Ugh. At this point, I'm just getting tired. The only reason to get rid of Gunn is if some new batch of suits want to soft reboot into yet *another* new vision for DC, and ffs WB, there's a limit to how many times I can invest in this nonsense. I don't care if it's Gunn, but can we just commit to a vision already so that we can finally get past the tired-ass "dawn of the Justice League" and actually get to Justice League adventures?

@SwingsetKnight - agreed

I wish something would be allowed to play out rather then cut prematurely regardless of how feel about this universe so far.

"whether or not that'll be me that's able to fulfill that promise [laughs] depends on a lot of things"

It'll depend on one thing, and one thing only: $$$. If Gunn's movies continue to make money at the box office, and if his shows continue to bring in viewers, then he has nothing to worry about. Man of Tomorrow will be well into production by the time the deal is signed and approved, so as long as it does better than Superman, he should be safe to continue as is. No one will reboot and shake things up for the fun of it.

Thank God he's not in charge of the MCU's cosmic side. Around 2015–2016, some wanted him to oversee it. Taika feels like another James Gunn wannabe.

Now they can finally make the cosmic side great—without it looking goofy, cheap, or overly silly.

While most of us are likely not in the industry , we have seen & read stories about how unstable & quickly changing it can be so it makes sense imo for Gunn to be aware of that and realistic since you never know what could happen in the future since he could eventually leave for personal reasons , be ousted or hopefully stick on for a long time etc.

Anyway , so far I have enjoyed his 3 projects that have helped setup the DCU to varying degrees…

They certainly haven’t been perfect but I have liked this universe thus far so hopefully it continues to improve & grow under his watchful eye!!.

I think he’s just preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.
If Supergirl or Man of Tomorrow can break a billion he will most likely keep his job. If not they’ll probably just demote him and hope he stays on for producing and directing.

There's a higher % of WW3 starting tmrw than these movies breaking 1B

WB has been a shit show for years much to my chagrin! What is this their 3rd or 4th sake in recent years?!?!

They are sitting on some of the greatest IP’s of my lifetime. They own all the DC, Looney Toons, and Hanna-Barbera characters. Yet for years they haven’t known what to do with them.

And unlike Marvel Studios, they’ve had all these under one roof the whole time! Feel like they are finally starting to get Superman right for the first time since 1981, and now that may all be in jeopardy.

I think this sale will be the best thing to happen to DC fans. Gunn has a genuine love for DC and their characters but he needs some oversight to ensure that he doesn’t put out another Peace Maker S2. Gunn just needs to tone down the weirdness and divisiveness. Superman really should’ve been more of Top Gun: Maverick kind of movie instead of the goofy overstuffed mess we got.

Either way, I love Corensweat as Superman so regardless of what happens I really hope they keep in on after the sale.

I’ve been at a company when new ownership shows up and you have no idea of their agenda, priorities, fiscal expectations, or how many friends and family they have waiting in the wings to take your job.

Literally everything is up for grabs.

Oh ffs, he's got a 4 year contract that runs to November 2026.
WBD may or may not be sold by then. If sold the deal may not be finalised by then.
In any case his contract may or may not get renewed. If renewed, he may or may not accept a new contract.
DC have his road map.

This should not be news or speculation for another year!!

I liked Superman and Creature Commandos, but if he puts out another dud like that Peacemaker S2 finale, I'll be OK with him leaving.
