Ryan Reynolds Says DEADPOOL Rating Is Still Being Debated

Ever since the announcement of the upcoming Deadpool movie, many fans have wondered whether the film will receive a box-office friendly PG-13 rating or whether it will receive an R-rating. In a recent interview, star Ryan Reynolds briefly touched on this topic, come check out what he had to say!

While promoting his upcoming film Woman In Gold, which also stars Academy Award-winner Helen MirrenRyan Reynolds took a few moments to discuss another one of his upcoming films, the highly anticipated Deadpool. During the interview, he was asked whether he thought the Tim Miller-directed film would receive a PG-13 rating, which is considered more lucrative at the box office, or an R rating, which many fans are clamoring for. He had a simple reply: "That debate rages on. We’ll see."

He went on to refer to the film as "a bit of wish fulfillment" and also discussed what makes The Merc With The Mouth such a compelling character. "It’s just how unusual he is. You understand why there was trepidation to make the movie early on? Because it’s a really difficult character to put up on the screen for the studio. He’s a character that’s aware he’s in a film, he’s aware that he breaks the fourth wall."

After mentioning how he believes the popularity of the character makes shooting the film that much more exciting, Reynolds then went on to discuss Wade Wilson's place in the X-Men cinematic universe, and how Deadpool compares to the other seven X-Men films: "I mean, he does certain things that are unlike anything else in the X-Men Universe yet he is a part of the X-Men Universe. So it makes it a little challenging, I think, to find a way. He’s so popular—the comic book alone [is] one of the most popular selling comic books of all time so it’s exiting to be here shooting it. We don’t have the budget that most X-Men movies do. In the super hero world, this would be considered an independent film."

Both could work, arguments can be made for either. However the notion that "R" doesnt make enough money no longer holds water.

Yea, both ratings would work. I'd still love to see him in the MCU in the future. He can make cameos here and there like he did in Lego Marvel.

Just make it R, go all out, I cant wait for this movie, one of my most anticipated!

If this movie isn't R, then there'll have already been too much studio interference.

If they want it to bomb hard, they'll make it R.

I don't care how they rate it. They can easily make PG13 work, especially with an unrated bluray cut like with The Wolverine.

I would love it to be R-Rated, but I want it to make a shitload of money so Fox quickly greenlights either a sequel, or an X-Force movie starring Deadpool and Cable, and Domino, and Fantomex.

Anyone who doesn't want it R-rated is NOT a Deadpool fan. Period.
A PG-13 rating is only an option for the studio/producers to get more revenue.

They could very well create an R-rated DVD version but that's a cop out..DP is R.

Here's to hoping it's PG-13.

Just look at the success of Kingsman a R-Rated Deadpool movie would dominate the box office.

I bet they'll do it like the wolverine the cinema version is pg-13 to ensure maximum profit and then on bluray you can buy an unrated more bloody ediion.

Avengers was actually going to be rated R at first until I guess they made changes to the script to make it more acceptable towards audiences of all ages and etc. Either way people would've paid big money to see all of these characters on screen together. I think Fox is trying to plan out how the film could make even MORE than what they're currently expecting it to make by going easy on the rating. They can always release an R-Rated cut. Another reason to double the DVD sales. I mean when you really think about it there aren't too many superhero flicks with an R-rating that pull off unexpected numbers. Kingsmen may have to be the only excuse for now. But I mean who knows? We could see this film pull off the same success Kingsmen did with an R-rating and a February release to kick off the cbm momentum for the year.

Deadpool loves conflict so there's that.

Stop it. It in no way NEEDS I be R-Rated. There are multiple ways to make it work PG-13.

@Merc
Why "make it work"..?
That's you saying,change the source material,the character,the entire formula to fit a PG-13 standard.
OR...you can be true to Deadpool & make it correctly R-rated.

There is no real debate,if you want a REAL DP film = R
You want to have a watered down version = PG-13

It should be rated "R". There should be cursing and blood, and of course x-rated jokes.

@MercwithMouth

Awww man, how the heck did I forget about Blade? Well, yeah that's true, but I dunno for those films released in the early years I think about how there were hardly any rivalry going on between multiple comic book movies. I think that's possibly why Marvel may have went with a Netflix series for Deadpool so that we could see the true world he belonged in. To me, I think that in today's world audiences have more options which doesn't allow them all to be stuck on one franchise. (Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, Singer X-Men films) everyone's came out of the box and now people are being tugged from all directions. Millarverse, MCU, Fox/Sony Marvel films, DCCU...etc. There's more fruitful options out there.

@0megaDaGrodd

Yeah, that's true too. Plus you gotta count Sam Jackson as well! lol But yeah, I guess we'll have to see when things kick off more so visually than verbally.

I guess I'd prefer it being R-rated, but since it's an obscure thing starring Ryan Reynolds in a mask it'll need a lot going for it at the box office... PG-13 sounds alright.

Kingsman Secret Service should a good example that R rated cbm can make extremely good business. It's funny how Kingsman and Deadpool have a lot in common, except Deadpool is a little more popular then Kingsman.

I don't think it was the cast that brought everyone to see Kingsman, I think it just had some pretty damn good previews and turn out to be a really good movie

@sameoldthing

If it was me making it, I would definitely have it be Rated-R. And maybe, with the success of movies like Kingsman, it could make a lot of money as a Rated-R movie. But I think Deadpool lends himself well to be watered down. He can still be the Deadpool we know and love, even without the massive amounts of blood and profanity. Especially if they play on the rating with the profanity. Have the bleeps be a plot point. Have Wade be the only one that can hear it. Have one instance in the film where he's not bleeped and it completely messes with him. It would be a great running gag, and would be perfectly within Deadpool's style.
kong
kong - 3/23/2015, 5:57 PM
They'd both work, and making it PG-13 could set up great comedic scenes and bits for Deadpool. He could be bleeped when he cusses, but he's the only one that gets bleeped and hears the bleeping, and is severely annoyed by it.

He could talk about how the studio was to scared to make it R and wanted to make money so they went with PG-13.

There could be fight scenes and right before a sword comes in to contact with someone's neck the frame pauses and Deadpool walks out in front, telling the audience that the scene was deemed too violent for the rating goal and that they have to get the unrated dvd cut in a couple months to see it.

But if they do go R, go full out Church scene from Kingsman.
