TANGLED: Disney Rumored To Be Eyeing ELVIS Director Baz Luhrmann To Helm Live-Action Remake

Though there's been no official announcements (and probably won't be until the strikes come to an end), we've been hearing quite a lot about Disney's (potential) plans for a live-action remake of 2010's Tangled over the past few weeks, and this latest rumor is claiming that the House of Mouse may be zeroing in on a director.

According to insider Daniel Richtman, none other than Baz Luhrmann (Elvis, The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge) is being eyed to helm the project. Richtman also reiterates a recent rumor that Florence Pugh (Hawkeye, Oppenheimer) is in contention to play the lead role of Rapunzel.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi, who voiced Flynn Rider in the original animated retelling of Rapunzel, recently expressed interest in playing a live-action take on the character.

"And If Florence plays Rapunzel, what about me? Which would also be a trip because my real last name is Pugh, p-u-g-h, Zachary Levi Pugh, so you’d have pew-pew noise in Tangled. Come on!”

Though Richtman is usually pretty reliable, this report has been refuted by industry vet Jeff Sneider.

It's worth noting that Richtman never said Luhrmann had actually signed on to direct, only that Disney was pursuing him. Would it really be so far-fetched for the filmmaker to take the helm of a live-action Disney movie? He does love his musicals, after all!

The original Tangled was only loosely based on Rapunzel, and told the story of a beautiful princess who has been "locked away in a tower since she was captured as a baby by an old hag. Her magical long blonde hair has the power to provide eternal youth, and the evil Gothel uses this power to keep her young. At the age of 18, Rapunzel becomes curious about the outside world, and when a prince uses her tower as a refuge, she asks him to help her escape."

Tangled isn't usually held up as one of Disney's better animated efforts, but it's well worth a watch if you haven't seen it, and the story would lend itself well to a live-action retelling.

Luhrmann’s hit or miss but even he’s too good for this. I definitely buy them asking him, since they somehow managed to secure barry jenkins and sarah polley for some of these remakes, but i think he’s big enough to say no. Still bizarre to see disney poach big directors to make this ghastly shit when it all winds up looking like the same slop

@tmp3 - did you see Lowery's new Peter Pan iteration? One of the few of their remakes that felt like the person making it had actually bypassed the machine and left some of themselves in the product. It's not on the level of his Pete's Dragon redo, but it's very nice and creatively interesting

Agree with Chaotic Bisexual Jeff Sneider.

Luhrmann has spent his career working on self-generated material.

It's either been his own idea or source material that he is passionate about and that he pitched to studios.

Love him or hate him, he is not a studio man.

Everybody loves a good Disney check. Even Guy Ritchie made Aladdin, so I wouldn't rule this out.

I think these remakes of their more recent stuff are gonna blow up in their face. There's nostalgia for Tangled, but if they want to make any money out of it, it's gonna take a sequel - or a cross-over type of film that features the character. Not saying I wanna see that as someone who loved Tangled, but that's how you milk that thing. The live action Moana is even more hilarious, that film came out less than 7 years ago.

Lilo & Stitch makes a little more sense but still. I think after Hercules, they'll have burned the whole Disney Remake thing.

Go watch more original movies. Studios will keep doing this unless we vote with our wallets.

Remember when Disney took chances and tried to be constantly original and raising the bar at every chance? Yeah that was 15 years ago lol

I was done when they announced a Moana live-action remake. At least the Disney classics have been out 20+ years, but Moana hasn't even been out for 10...

Disney is gonna learn the hard way that nobody wants go see these remakes. Everybody now sees it for what it is, a lazy cash grab.
